Three complete thriller novels.

O R I G I N

1906 - Something is discovered by workers digging the Panama Canal. Something dormant. Sinister. Very much alive.

2009 - Project Samhain. A secret underground government installation begun 103 years ago in New Mexico. The best minds in the world have been recruited to study the most amazing discovery in the history of mankind. But the century of peaceful research is about to end.

BECAUSE IT JUST WOKE UP.

ORIGIN by J.A. Konrath
Hell is about to break loose...

T H E L I S T

A billionaire Senator with money to burn...
A thirty year old science experiment, about to be revealed...
Seven people, marked for death, not for what they know, but for what they are...

THE LIST by JA Konrath
History is about to repeat itself

H A U N T E D H O U S E

BEYOND AFRAID...

It was an experiment in fear.

Eight people, each chosen because they lived through a terrifying experience. Survivors. They don't scare easily. They know how to fight back.

BEYOND TRAPPED...

Each is paid a million dollars to spend one night in a house. The old Butler House, where those grisly murders occurred so many years ago. A house that is supposedly haunted.

BEYOND ENDURANCE...

They can take whatever they want with them. Religious items. Survival gear. Weapons. All they need to do is last the night.

But there is something evil in this house. Something very evil, and very real. And when the dying starts, it comes with horrifying violence and brutal finality.

There are much scarier things than ghosts.

Things that will kill you slowly and delight in your screams.

Things that won't let you get out alive.

HAUNTED HOUSE by J.A. Konrath
People are dying to leave...

This is another of the series of books written by Jack Kilborn in the Konrath/Kilborn Collective. The first set has a separate review. I read these with my Kindle Unlimited membership.

Origin: 5 Stars: I read this as a separate book, but since I wanted to read The List and Haunted House, I got the three book version. I’m glad I did, because re-reading Origin makes me remember why I love horror so much!

Imagine in President Teddy Roosevelt’s time, as the Panama Canal is being dug, a strange box is found. Imagine that this box brings fear to those who found it, and that fear encourages President Roosevelt to bury the box, along with scientists who know this is a lifetime assignment, who carefully watch the box. One day they then figure out how to open it. Whoops!

Come to present day. Every president has been briefed on what is going on in this buried, hidden bunker. However, each president is afraid of the world finding out what was in the box. Each president has to get scientists to the bunker, so scientists with something in their pasts with which the president can blackmail them with are found. As the scientists go underground, they are sworn to secrecy, with the burden of treason hanging over their heads, each knowing it will be a lifetime assignment.

Now the box is opened. What happens next? This book is full of screaming horror, and a fear that perhaps there’s a bunker out there of which we are not fully aware. Read this alone or in the omnibus. Worth it.

The List: 5 Stars: This is another I have already read. Sometimes I hate it when I download a book I’ve already read, sometimes, I’m glad. This is a glad time.

Pretend you are a police detective called to a murder scene. The deceased has a tattoo on his heel that you recognize, because you have one exactly like it on your heel. After some research, you find another murder victim had a tattoo on his heel. All of the tattoos, while in the same place, have a different meaning.

Suddenly, you find your life is in danger, just as you are put on “vacation” by your chief (Lt. Daniels, whom some of you may remember – her name is mentioned but that is her full participation), you and your partner, also on vacation, decide to do more investigating into the tattoos.

You find others with the same tattoos. However, during your search, you are thwarted by men trying to kill you, which is puzzling, because you cannot imagine why! But as more people with tattoos are located, the reason becomes clear: a megalomaniac wants you dead.

As you run for your life still trying to understand what these tattoos mean, you come to a horrifying discovery, and then the fun begins. Are you afraid? You should be.

    Haunted House - 5 stars

As Mr. Kilborn is wont to do, this has characters from other books returning. All but one of the survivors of the other books in this trio of books is here; the one that is not a survivor is from one of the Luther Kite books. If you haven’t read any of those, go get them. Survivors of Kite are just as damaged as the survivors in the other books in this triology.

If you were offered a million dollars to participate in a fear experiment for a weekend in a haunted house because you survived the previous two books, would you do it? The Haunted House is famous. It comes in second only to the house in Connecticut as the most well-known haunted house in the United States.

The reason? An experiment what happens during periods of intense fear. Some accept, some do not. The ones that do accept are terrified out of their minds, but there is no million dollar prize at the end of the weekend as offered. Instead, there are other ideas for the weekend, and none are pretty.

Origin: 4 ****At last a modern day author who knows how to make me enjoy a good horror story again. I had resorted to reading the entire works of H.P. Lovecraft, great stories but nice to get a new author. A bit of SF splattered with a lot of gore (who could ask for anything more?). The characters were literally well fleshed out. I bought this in a set of 3 and look forward to reading the 2 remaining and many, many more books by Konrath

The List: 4****Has a great opening, gets your attention. A very unique story about people with numbers tattooed on the bottom of their feet. Avid readers will be suspicious immediately and proven right. All in all, an engrossing thriller

The Haunted House: 3*** The only surprises in this book are (1) everyone didn't die, and (2) I finished the book. The regrettable thing about the story is that it has been told so often by almost everyone; haunted house, slash and gut. It was adequate for the genre, but forgettable. An okay beach read when you are actually people watching .

I'm giving this book 5 stars because it's definitely J.A. Konrath and he is very entertaining! I've read quite a few of his books and in most of them is the greatest humor. I can't help but dissolve into the giggles at humor in the Jack Daniels Series. My husband has gotten used to me wanting to read paragraphs to him when I catch my breath!

I really enjoyed these stories but I cannot understand why writers have to go overboard. It's a lot like king and koontz books where you really get into it then they throw in something so bizarre and totally unbelievable and ruin a good thriller! That's what happened in every story here. I found myself skimming pages to get thru all the crap. All in all it could've been a really great 5 star book if it wasn't for the overkill.

J A Konrath writes some scary and disturbing stuff. I had already read The List and Haunted House awhile ago and still enjoyed reading them again. Origin was new for me. I Especially like the reoccurring characters and the fact that good wins over evil, not like most new horror novels were the evil never dies. The concept for origin was intriguing. And really showed the gullibility on some people and also proved some people can change and do better. The List had a really neat concept concerning replication thru DNA. And Haunted House was a meeting of courageous people fighting again against evil. With a great ending. Look for the monkey.

For Origin alone this book is worth a read. One of my favorite stories, and the one that got me into reading indie authors.
The List is also very good, I'm just starting on Haunted House now. Regardless of how it turns out, for the first two alone this is a five star bundle.

4.0 out of 5 stars More for Technothriller Fans
Reviewed in Japan on June 28, 2014

I've always been a Jack Kilborn fan so I had to read his other novels too. The Origin and the List are classified more as technothrillers and I wouldn't really say they're horror. At least, not in the same way as his other books like Afraid, Trapped and Endurance. It's a different step from his usual horror masterpieces but I have to admit, they're worth a shot.

What really captured my attention from the Origin novel is the prospect of Satan physically existing in the world as a monstrous creature. What's worse about it is that the creature is not only horrific in appearance but has a brilliant mind too. What can be more scary than that? The first half of the book was well paced and really delved into uncovering the mystery of "Satan". However, the ending it kinda delved too much into the whole Jurassic Park theme. I reckon it would have better if Kilborn stuck with the mystery and horror of dealing with the devil itself. Not a bad novel, but not his very best either.

The List is more mystery and action than horror to me. It's about uncovering the true nature and identities of certain individuals with only a number for a clue. This book would have been a great movie. It was fast paced and never a boring moment. It certainly kept me turning the page. A must for mystery lovers out there. It was an interesting book and concept, but I think horror is where Kilborn shine at his best.

Haunted House is a horror novel where some of the past characters from his previous books return. The concept isn't really original. For them to spend the night at a haunted place and try to survive the night. Winner gets a lot of money as a reward. Due to the numerous characters involved, it took some of the fear and isolation away. Still scary, bloody and gory but not as great as his other horror novels in comparison.

Overall, a nice read and definitely for suspense and mystery lovers. But if you're truly looking for real fear and horror then check out this author's other books.
