Captivating Horror Collection
Paint it Black felt like reading Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. I was completely swept in to the majority of the stories and liked how each one was just as twisted and unique as the last. Plots included: Murdering psychotic wives Bloodlike rain with cocooning tendrils Man eating monsters Possession/demons Weird small town rituals Strangers and sinister bargains and trades I don't know if others have this feeling with short stories, but it's like watching mini movies in your head. Well crafted plots with characters that were surprisingly fleshed out in the little bit of time we are with them. And the sly inclusion of an almost parable learning moment by the time you're finished. Each story is wholly unique too. No two are alike and the element of paranormal changes expertly. If you're into the paranormal and enjoy things like Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and Cabinet of Curiosities, this collection would be an excellent choice for your next read. All thoughts are my own. True rating 4.5 out of 5 stars.

This is an awesome collection. I enjoyed all the stories, but there's one called "Autumn of '79" that is now one of my all-time favorites. Here's an excerpt:
"In my own mind, people were either saints or sinners. The righteous or the damned. But magic still existed too, in our young imaginations. I don’t think you lose that belief until you grow older.
Adults forget the things children once knew to be true."
I'm looking forward to more from Huntington. Highly recommended!

Great short story collection! Fun, interesting, and unique takes on some of horrors favorite subjects. My personal favorites were the monster stories, if you’re a fan of monsters in any way, pick this up and you will be pleased. Other than the monster stories speaking directly to my soul, there’s some really great stuff in here, an astral projection story, a unique look at a haunted house, and a bad ass jukebox.

"…redemption is not for sale. Damnation is given. Our blackest abyss is free. Madness is reserved only for the wise…"

Ahhhhhhhh. I have something to look forward to…

Having been a reader for…well, forEVER, it is always a huge pleasure to discover a new author. Particularly when that author is hugely talented. That applies to a couple I've experienced in the past few years, most recently with Stephen Graham Jones, who doesn’t need me to tell him he’s THAT gifted. But I just did, and he is. Same for Priya Sharma, whose praises I cannot sing loudly enough…and isn’t she due for something new?

Now then. Sarah Jane Huntington. More specifically, Sarah Jane Huntington, author of “Paint It Black and Other Stories”, on which I am about to expound.

I'm grinning here. You can’t see me, but trust me, I am grinning here. Looking out my office window at the grass I STILL must cut, I am nonetheless grinning hugely. Reason being, I have not just discovered a splendid new author, but I have discovered a NEW FAVORITE AUTHOR, and those are very difficult to come by, especially when I am spending so much of my in-between-lockdown-crises writing my own stuff. And anyone who writes will tell you, that leaves little time for reading for enjoyment.

Still, I do somehow manage to read a lot, and generally I post reviews if I feel the material is worth the effort of doing so, or is particularly noteworthy. Like B. A. Paris’s “The Therapist”, or “My Heart Is A Chainsaw” by Stephen Graham Jones, who’d better be shortlisted (at least) for another Stoker award.

But I digress. Forgive me, I have that tendency.

About “Paint It Black”, then, by Sarah Jane Huntington, my NEW FAVORITE AUTHOR. Well, let me get the unpleasantness out of the way first. There’s nary a paragraph break or first line indent to be found anywhere in this manuscript, which makes reading a definite chore, at least for me at my advanced age. But I don’t know, perhaps I just got a bad copy…this will happen sometimes with ebooks. Anyway. That little nuisance aside, allow me to be frank: this is one of the stronger debuts I've read in the past ten years.

    No, seriously.

Let me put it more concisely: there’s not a clinker in the baker’s dozen of tales included beyond the wonderful cover. Not even one. Oh, some are certainly better than others, but they’re ALL good. There are a couple in particular I will single out, starting with…“The Void”.

Now, I am not inclined to swear in reviews (okay, maybe sometimes I am) but GUACAMOLE (ofensive word redacted), this was awesome, one of those stories I wish I'd written. I'm not sure I'd be capable of it though. This one grabbed me and hung on, all the way through the bittersweet closing:

"...for a small moment, she feels a pang of sadness. For her, the world was always too dark, no matter how many lights she used. She knows that no one will miss her. No tears will be shed for her. She repelled others, those who sensed she walked in two worlds…her world is for oddities, the discarded, the broken and rejected. The Void is for her…."

    Wow.

I get the feeling that this was sort of personal for the author…if it is, bless you, Sarah Jane, and I hope this was as wonderful and purging for you to write as it was for me to read. You had me in tears. That doesn’t happen very often in a short story, not with me, anyway. Wonderful, just wonderful. And then there is “The House And I”, which MAY be a tale of madness, or maybe it’s about possession. Or maybe it’s something else entirely. In any case, it’s very evocative and original. And as for “The Jukebox”…well…make your selections wisely friends…

What were you doing in “Autumn Of ’79”? Myself, I was sweating it out at Marine Corps boot camp. Unlike Joanna and her family, who meet someone in this tale who may be an angel, or possibly something very very different. This is another one of those stories that reads as if it were very personal. It’s also beautifully done. Savor this one, especially when you move on to the next tale, “Murder Most Horrid”, which is a most descriptive title, and casseroles may be off for me for the indefinite future.

Mind you, there’s lots of unhappy endings in this collection, which is not necessarily a bad thing considering the genre. One of the unhappiest is “Inner Voice”. What an ending this one has! And the lyrical “Tick Tock” has a most unpleasant denouement as well. Good thing there’s still one story left…oh wait, it’s pretty grim too! I feel inclined to note that there’s lots of human consumption taking place in these stories. If this turns you off, you’re probably out of luck, but if that sort of thing doesn’t scare you…yikes! Dive right on in!

Sometimes the dark is…okay. In fact, I spent much of my early life underground and in that blessed dark…or, as the liner notes for one of my favorite records (“Big Night Music”, by Shriekback) declared, “…the place we always felt most at home…” As such, I’ve always felt that in order to appreciate the light, you have to also be able to embrace the dark. Sarah Jane Huntington has well and truly done so with this collection, and if there is any justice in this world, it will make her a star in the Horror and Dark Fantasy firmament. Run, do not walk, and get this one and see if you don’t agree.

    Highly recommended!

I am not going to talk about the individual stories in this collection, because the reader is better off going in cold.

I'm also not going to rate them individually, because, quite frankly, they're all five star stories.

I'm just going to tell you to buy this book, and read it. Sarah Jane Huntington is one to watch, people.

Seriously, this collection blew me away.

I'm pretty picky when it comes to short story collections. Recently, some of the ones I've read have been really hit and miss. I suppose that's the risk you run with a collection of shorter tales, so I bought this one based on some of the reviews I'd read.

I have to admit, I'm very impressed. I can honestly say there wasn't a weak story amongst them. Sometimes I find that shorter tales lack atmosphere, character development and the space to let twists/turns breathe. That's not the case here at all. Huntington has created tales that really stick in your mind. That really stay with you, long after you've finished the book itself.

One of the things that I liked the most was the simple fact that it didn't fall in to the trap of having really simple resolutions at the end of each story. Some could, and would, be taken in different ways depending on who is reading it. There are some wonderfully shocking, some may say bleak endings, and there are some that really make you feel for the characters themselves.

Definitely one that will stay with you, especially if you are a horror fan.

This is the first book I’ve read by Sarah Jane Huntington, and it will not be the last!

This is a cracking collection of scares, and one I would recommended to anyone who likes horror.
There is such originality on offer within these tales. Sarah definitely has the skills when it comes to writing horrors that are fresh and unique.
While I enjoyed all the tales in this book, my favourites have to be Survivors, The House and I, The Jukebox, and Autumn of ‘79, the latter being the best story of the collection. Brilliant stuff.

If you haven’t checked out Sarah Jane Huntington’s work, I suggest you do. You’re in for a treat, and quite a bit of gore!
