Planter's Punch (Jack Daniels) Kindle Edition
JA Konrath is the author of the Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels mysteries. She's a Chicago homicide cop with a wicked sense of humor, and the novels fluctuate between funny business and serious suspense.
Tom Schreck is the author of the Duffy Dombrowski mysteries. He's a social worker by day and a semi-pro boxer by night, and he's quick with a left hook as he is with his wit.
Planter's Punch is a 7500 word novella that features both Jack Daniels and Duffy Dombrowski.
It also includes a bonus interview with the authors.
Both Schreck and Konrath write funny, laugh out-loud mysteries without skimping on the action and suspense.
Kirkus calls Duffy, "Warmhearted, tough, and funny" and Crimespree Magazine raves, "In the boxing match of life I want Duffy Dombrowski as my ring man."
Booklist calls the Jack Daniels series, "A solid success for those who like to mix comedy and grit" and Library Journal calls Konrath, "Not to be missed."
If you are a more sensitive (or adventurous) reader, this handy scale rates specific categories from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) to give you some idea if this is your kind of book.

Wow, that's a lot of Jack.
If you like your thrillers on the dark side, check out the Konrath Dark Thriller Collective, which includes the books The List, Origin, Afraid, Trapped, Endurance, Haunted House, Webcam, Disturb, What Happened To Lori, The Nine, Second Coming, and Close Your Eyes.
Joe also wrote the Stop A Murder mystery puzzle series, where you become the sleuth and solve brain teasers to try and catch a killer.
He also wrote the sci-fi trilogy, Timecaster, Timecaster Supersymmetry, and Timecaster Steampunk. Even if you don't think you like sci-fi, give them a try. They feature Joe's well-known characters from his other series, and are insane.
With Ann Voss Peterson he wrote the Codename: Chandler thrillers, including Flee, Spree, Three, Hit, Exposed, Naughty, Fix (with F. Paul Wilson), Rescue, and Free.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2010Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI love Konrath and am working my way through his books -- and now I am adding Schreck to my favorite author list.
This collection of short stories are entertaining and remind me of Chinese food -- fills you up for now, but you end up hungry again in a few hours to read more by these talented authors. Both Daniels and Dombrowski are tough and flawed, but with hearts that do care to make their world right. The cast of characters around them are fun and seem to remind me of people I know.
The only complaint I have is regarding the formatting -- I wish this book had an active TOC; one I could click forward to the next story vs having to page forward (or back). I had previously read several of the short stories in another collection and wished there was an easy way to skip over them.
Highly recommend! :)
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI continue to be amazed when people complain about the length of a book when the page about the book TELLS you it is less than 40 pages long. Who in their right mind thinks a 30 odd page book is a novel? If you think that, you deserve finding out the hard way that it isn't. If I were that dumb, I wouldn't complain about it for others to see. Dumb is as dumb does.
Now that we have that out of the way let's talk about the story. Yes, it's short. That is what amazes me. How can something so short pack so much into it? This is the second one of these shorts I've read, and I was pleased both times. Usually short stories do not pack this big of a punch. Definitely worth more than we paid for it whether you paid 99 cents or got it free like I did.
This is a story about a boxer winning a fight and going to a bar for a drink. He is confused when the normally few customers turns out to be so many more, but that quickly turns into anger when he learns some thugs have his dog. We soon discover there is even more at stake, and we are not disappointed in the action.
As I read the reviews I also saw complaints about there not being an ending. That and other issues make me wonder what books other reviewers read because their reviews did NOT fit this story. For those considering THIS story (Planter's Punch) there most DEFINITELY is an ending -- one that I liked. Bottom line: we have established it's short so read it and decide for yourself whether it is worth the short amount of time you have to invest to read it. For me it is a resounding yes.
My only complaint is the language. I don't know why people have to use profanity. However, let's be serious. People DO talk like this, and I would expect no less in a bar, a boxing situation, or among cops dealing with criminals. If you would, you might as well quit reading stories about any of these things.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLove Jack Daniels stories. Looking forward to new book coming out later this year. I have read the whole series.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2012Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhen I began this story, my first reaction was, "What's a Bulger? Some type of wheat? A new, hip description of a fat person's belly that I'm unfamiliar with? Then they said "Ray Bulger," so I realized it was someone's name, someone in "The Wizard of Oz." Oh, Ray Bolger! Okay, I know it's only off by one letter, which is easy to do in any writing, but Guys, you should have looked it up on Wikipedia. It's distracting.
Enough nitpicking, and on to the story. It's not supposed to be a classic novel, and it's written for a specific, targeted audience. Fourteen year old boys, I believe, just like action-adventure movies. So I shouldn't have been reading it in the first place, since I'm neither 14 nor a boy. However, I had read so much hype about the authors making millions selling ebooks on Amazon, I wanted to see what all the noise was about. It's a throw-away style, frequently emulated, rarely done in an interesting or readable way. I did find this one readable and more amusing than I expected. Would make a good read while riding the commuter train. However, if you're craving a short story that's a little more sophisticated, try Stranger Than Fiction-An Urban Tale.
The best part about it, and I believe the key to the authors' success, was the Q&A session at the end. I could have read the witty, buddy-movie, cross-banter all day. Laughed out loud a couple of times. Made me wish I was friends with those guys and was meeting them at the local pub after work. My solution. Give them a talk show. Me and every 14-year-old boy on Earth would watch it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Planter's Punch by J.A. Konrath & Tom Schreck Kindle edition
Format: KindleVerified PurchasePlanter's Punch by J.A. Konrath & Tom Schreck, this is a story of the Russian Mafia, boxing & Kidnaping, Not bad for a 40 odd page short, the main characters are Jack Daniels & Duffy Dombrowski, the latter being one of Tom Schreck's I presume as this is the first time I have come across his name, the plot is simple with nothing new but don't let that put you of, the action starts from the moment you turn the first page and continues to the end. Then you have an interview between Konrath & Schreck that is funny (well it made me Laugh) and portrays both as not taking everything to serious, after this you have two excerpts from "shot of Tequila" & "The List" by Konrath/Kilborn (yes I know that these authors are one and the same) to end, overall I enjoyed the style and pace of the book so 5 STARS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth reading..
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIf you're a Kilborn (Konrath) fan, a mild inoffensive short story which will fill in an hour or so. Good flowing story as always from Konrath (Kilborn). Free when I got it, but worth the current 77p (until Amazon change the price again)
