Chronicle of the Roman Republic: The Rulers of Ancient Rome From Romulus to Augustus Hardcover – June 1, 2003
Purchase options and add-ons
"A commendable addition to a series intended to make history accessible to general readers."―Choice
The Roman Republic was one of the most civilized societies in the ancient world, ruled by elected officials whose power was checked by a constitution so well crafted that it inspired the founding fathers of the United States of America. Here Philip Matyszak describes fifty-seven of the foremost Romans of the Republic, spanning the centuries from its birth to its bloody death and including the best and the worst of the Roman elite: Licinius Crassus, a kind father and loving husband who crucified slaves by the thousands, or Cato the Censor, upright and incorruptible, xenophobic and misogynistic.Supported by a wealth of pictorial and archaeological detail, these personal histories provide an overview of the development and expansion of Rome, encompassing foreign and civil wars as well as social strife and key legislation. The biographies are supplemented by time lines, data files, and special features that highlight different aspects of Roman culture and society. 320 illustrations, 110 in color

About the author

Ancient history has been my job and my hobby for the last 30 years. I spend a lot of time immersed in the world of antiquity, and whenever I come up a story or an idea that I would like to share with the rest of the world I write about it.
At other times, when there's some information I want, and there's no readily available book that offers this, I write that book too. Some of my students (I also teach) have never before been introduced to the ancient world. It's a fascinating place, as different as any alternative universe, but real. I always get excited by exploring there, and there's always something new to find.
At various times, I've lived on three different continents, and spent several wonderful years in Italy living right on top of the material I was writing about. I'm now in Canada with a home deep in the mountains of British Columbia, but there's a part of me that is still in Rome lurking in the shadows of the ancient forum.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseTo make a long story short I borrowed this book at least a dozen times and kept it as long as possible. That's because this is a fantastic and concise reference book if you are interested in the Roman Empire.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis is a relatively rare book on a less popular ancient history period, so it is good to know. And it is from a distinguished British publisher on ancient history. You would enjoy reading it if you have interest in such things.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2020Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis concise yet remarkably inclusive history of the leaders of the Roman Republic by Philip Matyszak is well worth its price, measured in time or money. It has minor failures - the author gives in to high moral dudgeon when it comes to the Caesars, and uncritically accepts the traditional view that the Republic fell to avarice rather than necessity - but all in all, this is a good book for beginner or seasoned veteran of the topic.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2020Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseVery organized layout and super comprehensive. I am still reading this book. It is rather dense, but seems to be a good basic overview of the major events in ancient Roman history, including who their enemies and allies were, the dynamics between the leaders, and how dramatic and bloody politics were at that time. I would highly recommend the book “24 Hours in Ancient Rome” by the same author, which offers a slice of life view of an average ancient Roman.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2009Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI liked this book a lot. I've several books about Roman History, but almost all from the end of the Republic to the end of the Empire. This one gives an overview of the main actors from the era of the kings to the end of the Republic, focusing on the consuls' lifes. So you read about the battles in the Punic Wars as long as they happen during the lifes of the different consuls, not the other way around. The book is well ilustrated, with maps, images of coins, statues and roman's works.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2013Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis is one of an excellent series that gives you potted histories. All have concise, well-written text, are lavishly illustrated, and have good sub-articles. This is my favourite in the series, since I love Roman history. It also has the advantage of being written by a well-established scholar in the field. I commend this book to anyone starting to fall in love with early Roman history. It provides a fruity fact-filled history that will complement your tv and movie viewing.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2008Format: HardcoverMr. Matyszak's Chronicle of the Roman Republic is a coffee table style book beautifully illustrated on nice heavy glossy paper. The book is comprised of biographical sketches of all the leading figures of the Republic presented in chronological order. The author presents a nice introduction to the Republic but this presentation style doesn't allow for a clear flow of the course of events as often more than one figure participates. Thus, specific events are occulted as the role of major figures is gleaned only through the course of dozens of pages. With no uniform image emerging the reader is left without much of a big picture understanding - events come and go with little connection from one to the other. Also the clipped writing style with occasional dangling modifiers doesn't help bring events to life. The author seems eager to tell his tale, but falls short.

3.0 out of 5 stars anachronistic judgements
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI will not write a long review here as the reviews are fine....but this book is full of 'anachronistic judgements'. This is a problem if you are a student and wish to use this book as a source. Historical figures should only be critiqued using the mores of the time in question. When using this book students should rely only on the facts and avoid the author's judgements of the characters.

Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is probably the best account that will be written of the personalities and political activities of one of the most fascinating and best documented periods of ancient times. The time scale accepted in it is that of Livy, who lived and wrote at the very end of the period. He certainly pushes the history, as against the antiquity, of Rome a good deal further back than the early days of the period merit. There is a problem in that encyclopaedias have accepted and perpetuated much that is false in time scales and personal assessments of some major figures. The personal assessments are largely those of the protagonists, in the case of Cicero and Caesar in particular. Livy endeavoured a time scale for Rome commensurate with the Olympic calendar in use in his day. He missed by a decade or two. There is much fictive material of this kind included, which has all been dogmatised by classics departments. It is for that reason the book is a must for any one with examinations to sit. Lucid, readable, attractively presented, both author and publishers have done themselves proud. A good buy but keep your questioning antennae focused.
