Part-Time Monster Hunter (Kat Drummond Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 571 ratings

I was orphaned and left for dead…

Until a ghost found me and taught me to slay monsters.

My name is Kat Drummond. Part-Time Monster Hunter. After watching a necromancer dissect my parents, I swore vengeance against the undead and the maniacs who bring them into the world.

But hunting monsters isn’t easy. Especially in Hope City.

Lucky for me, I’ve got a ghost from another world here to train me.

He’s got a bone to pick with the undead just as much as I do. Together, we’ll become the greatest monster hunters Hope City has ever seen.

There’s a new necromancer on the block, and an army of undead monstrosities at his command. This could be my shot at entering the big leagues.

Or wind up a walking corpse.

Review

"If you're looking for a supernatural, action-packed, heart-pounding read, full of magic and chaos, with a strong female lead then give this book a whirl."- KJ Simmill, Reader's Favourites

"This was a surprisingly fun book with appropriate world-building for the quirky hunter's new activity. It was well-paced with lots of amazing characters to get used to! Lots of action and laughable moments keep the reader eagerly moving forward to see what's going to happen next! This is the start of something new - grab a copy and see if you can survive the fun!" Emily Pennington, Top 500 Reviewer ★★★★★

"Kat Drummond might be a university student slaying monsters but don't confuse her with Buffy! She has a no-nonsense approach to the gruesome job, a love of a good sci-fi book, and an adorable cat to keep her company. The support characters in this book were highly entertaining and helped lighten up what could have been a very dark book." Marjorie ★★★★★

"Part-Time Monster Hunter is a fun exordium into the world of Kat Drummond." Alina Hart ★★★★★

"This was an amazing book. It has a great storyline and characters. I love strong female characters and the author really delivered with Kat. She is a true kick*ss heroine with some serious skills thanks to the assistance of Treth, her spirit sidekick, she is at the top of the game." Amazon Reviewer ★★★★★

"I love the concept behind this book. Magic has entered the world. Magic and magical creatures have always been around in small quantities, but the barriers between our world and other worlds have fallen and now magic and magical creatures are everywhere. Kat is a college student that exterminates monsters in her spare time to make ends meet. Let the fun begin!" Paul D Cobbs ★★★★★

From the Author

Part-Time Monster Hunter is the thrilling first book in the Kat Drummond Series and the Katverse. If you are unsure about buying it, check out Soul Bound first. It's a short story prequel, available for free on the Kat's Crusaders website, and should give you a decent taste of the universe and series.

Her parents killed by evil necromancers, Kat is slaying monsters to survive and get revenge. Trent, the knight spirit, who resides in her body helps her fight. When she notices an increase in zombie activity, she sets out to find the source. Fighting this necromancer might cost her more than she knows. A great read.

I remember discussing the cover of this book with the author before it was published. I had no idea who he was or what the book was about. I pre-ordered it (glad i did) but forgot about it for a long time. I saw it in my library and decided to read it. Didn't want to put it down. Imagine my pleasant surprise, in the couple years that I had missed this book, there were tons of others added to the series. I LOVE it when I start a fantastic series and don't have to wait for more of the story. So I'm sad but glad that this book got lost on my digital shelves for a while. Now I can binge!

I think this book is a great opening gambit. The story line is interesting, the characters are real enough, I'm enjoying the different take on magic and beasties. It's a little unpolished but that just gives it room to grow. The second book was even better. I'm only taking a quick break before starting the 3rd one to do a quick review so I don't forget.

The only thing that was a little tough for me (at first) was such a mature 19 year old, but hey, post cataclysmic times are different I'm sure. Just like times used to be much tougher and folks used to grow up faster. I surely wasn't that on the ball at 19.

Anyhow, if you enjoy a good urban fantasy, you won't be disappointed with this book. Or the second. I'm going to go ahead and say all of them. I'll now officially be stalking Nicholas Woode-Smith. :)

So, like the subject says I was pleasntly surprised. Why you might ask, well let me enlighten you.😁 The book has a strong driven heroine who has her own dark begining. Driven by a past she can't shake, a cadre of friend who care for and support her, and a villain that is truly worthy of a tormented hero. The twist and turns as you walk with her while she managers her life, college, and a burgeoning monster hunting career grabs and holds you. Without giving away spoilers, I will say generally if I revie a book that is a series and it hasn't already been over reviewed or made me go "erhmagerd!" at the end, I usually wait till the last book and review all of them. This one however is amazing, compelling, well edited (that's very important) and well worth reading twice (I know, I did). Now on to the next book!

Nicholas or however you spell his name has written a FANTASTIC book! I read it in two days because I couldn't put it down! If you knew me, you would be shocked that I finished a book, let alone finished in two days!

The book and introducing of characters feels well paced. Not only this, but it feels like a book introducing a series, not a book meant to encapsulate the whole story (take that as you will).

The only thing I can bash on right now is the ending. To some people, this was a fantastic way to end the book. It was fast, action packed, you can watch it as a movie in your head, and reasonable. What I didn't like is that it seemed to ramp up and up and up, hit the Pinnacle and then the book was over. To me it seemed like there was no concluding it (even though the conclusion exists, I just don't believe it did it's justice). Good news for me: there's another book that I'm already buying to read! Good work mate!!!

I purchased and listened to this on Audible books.
I listened to this story and it was quite different then a lot of stories, but unsure if I really liked it. MC is so overtaken with revenge that she cannot even have a life outside of killing monsters. Narrator does a Fair job, but in background you can at times hear her personal dogs barking and other noises not part of this book.

I enjoyed the book. Kat is an interesting character. She had her darkness, her demons but is trying. Something about the progression to the ending feels a little odd to me but there was nothing wrong with it. Maybe the next book will tell me more...

Kat is a full time student of Undead Studies and part-time Monster Hunter barely making enoughto scrape by. Kat spends her days trying to take classes and studying for tests. She fills her nights with odd low paying dangerous jobs slaying zombies and other undead creatures. The bounty recieved was barely enough to pay her rent and buy a bit of ramen noodles. Kat didn't choose this for the income. Her parents were killed by a necromancer and she barely escaped with her life and she intended to make a difference in her city with a sword.

Kat also lives a relatively normal college life and had friends. Despite the changing world following the Rifts. These changes allowed a Rift to open between worlds allowing magical monsters too get through into her world.

Kat's world is different from our own. Dark, dangerous and filled with evil at every turn.

Kat's interactions with friends are the only bright light keeping her connected with what is still good and right in the world.

Kat's world is fascinating and I look forward to continuing the series.

First off, it's another young female who slays undead and other monsters. I have read a couple like that. This said, I was surprised at how engaging Kat Drummond is. A feeling of latent superpower, obfuscated by a grounded woman, student life, eating noodles and having few friends, that stops this version from being too cliche. Nice monsters, good background, well written, fast-paced. Very easy to read, but also very moorish, like a particular curved snack, sold in tubes. I wanted to keep reading rather than get off my bus.
