Blitzed (Rules of Possession Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 836 ratings

NFL tight end Andrew McAdams isn’t thrilled to be sidelined with an injury. He’s even less thrilled about his legal troubles. Community service is the only thing standing between him and jail so...yeah. That’s a no-brainer. It's not all bad news, though. He gets to work with Jesse Fox, who is as gorgeous as he is guarded. And there's no rule saying he can't do his hours and have a little fun. Right?

Wrong. Jesse may have to put up an athlete using his center as a "get out of jail free" card, but that's where he draws the line. And who cares if Andrew is unexpectedly sweet and thoughtful? The people in Jesse’s life think he should get a life outside of charity work and find love. And maybe he will. But it won't be with a playboy NFL player wearing an ankle monitor as an accessory. Besides, anyone who dated someone like that would be thrust into the public eye. Jesse has worked hard to become someone else—someone better—and he's not about to dig up the past.

That's just not a game he's willing to play.

Too bad it’s not in Andrew’s nature to give up on something he wants. It may have started as simple attraction, but now it’s much more than that. He doesn’t just want Jesse for now…he wants Jesse for always.

And that's not a game he's willing to lose.

S.E. Harmon has had a lifelong love affair with writing. It's been both wonderful and rocky (they've divorced several times), but they always manage to come back together. She's a native Floridian with a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters in Fine Arts, and used to spend her time writing educational grants. She now splits her days between voraciously reading romance novels and squirreling away someplace to write them. I've waited for this story in what feels like forever.

The Blueprint and A Deeper Blue were among the first M/M stories I ever read, and they remain at the top of my all time favourite romance novel list.

Now, Blitzed isn't about Kelly and Blue (even if they do make a few appearances) but about Andrew McAdams - Blue's sort of but not quite arch nemesis.
    And it's awesome.
It doesn't reach the same laugh-and-snort level as the first two instalments. Andrew's more mature than Blue, and Jesse isn't nearly as snarky as Kelly, but Blitzed still has that same Harmon vibe that I adore. A glorious blend of immature humour, sarcasm and cynicism. Love it!

Anyway. The story starts with Andrew injured, struggling with his physical therapy to work his way back in shape and get back in the game. When a nap in his car ends up getting him community service, Andrew chooses to work at Rainbow Harbor, an LGBTQ+ youth centre managed by Jesse Fox, a guy Andrew's been unsuccessfully trying to charm into going on a date. Jesse is determined to keep turning down Andrew, no matter how tempting he is. Jesse's been burned before, and anyway, a public relationship with an NFL star is out of the question because of Jesse's past.

The tone of this story is different than the first two books. It's more serious somehow. Maybe because of the setting of an underfunded LGBTQ+ youth centre, or because of Jesse's demons and how his troubled past dictates his present life. But it's still light and sweet romance when it comes down to it, with a HEA of course.

    Andrew surprised me.
Sure, I knew he was a good guy, that much was clear from Kelly's viewpoint in previous books. But I was expecting more of an immature man-child (Blue version 2 maybe?), but instead he turned out to be this super sweet and considerate guy who wasn't afraid to be vulnerable. Fun-loving and goofy, yes, but not so much that it took over his entire personality. Jesse was a bit on the serious side. His job is his life, and his personal life suffers for it. His past experiences - both with his family and a previous partner - makes it hard for him to trust anyone.

It might sound like Andrew pursues Jesse in the "won't-take-no-for-an-answer" creepy kind of way, but's that not the case at all. Harmon managed to keep Andrew's interest and flirting light and playful, without ever crossing the line. And I also thought Jesse's conflicted feelings were nicely depicted. He's obviously very attracted to Andrew but is afraid for so many reasons.
I thought Jesse's background was super intriguing, and I would have loved for that to have been an even bigger part of the story. There's him being thrown out on the street as a teen, his on-going tentative contact with his father, and the hard choices he had to make to survive on the street. Jesse's experiences are stark contrasts to Andrew's life, even if he too have some demons of his own.

Technically it’s not absolutely necessary to read the first books in the series, it’s probably possible to enjoy it as a stand-alone. But why would you want to? If you haven’t read the first two you’ve missed out big time. So read those first.

All in all. This is a delightful read with just the right amount of steam, humour and angst. I can't lie though, Kelly and Blue are still my favourites, but Andrew and Jesse exceeded my expectations.
Also, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Trace gets his own book. A redemption story is just what he (and I) needs.
    Anyway. 5 stars. Highly recommend.

Summary: NFL quarterback Andrew asks Jesse out every time he sees him, but Jesse always says no. But now, injured and with a bogus DUI requiring he put in three months community service, Andrew sees his chance to get to know Jesse better when he volunteers at the LGBTQ youth center Jesse helps run. But Jesse has sworn off love and has a past he doesn’t want to share. Good thing Andrew never gives up.

Review: I really enjoyed this story. Andrew and Jesse have great banter—which is one of my favorite things. Andrew is kind and generous if a bit chaotic and impulsive. Jesse is prickly but loyal and sweet underneath. They make a good pair when they finally get together. I like that Andrew doesn’t give up but he also isn’t disrespectful about it: he spends time with Jesse and is genuine in his desire to help the kids at the center—it’s not just pretending to score points with Jesse which gives Jesse time to get to know him.

Jesse has a heartbreaking past that provides a believable reason for why he’s so incredibly guarded and reluctant to get involved with Andrew. If I have any complaint about the story it’s that when Jesse decides to go for it with Andrew it felt a little sudden—like in one scene he was fighting it and in the next that was all forgotten. But even so, the story takes seriously Jesse’s past and the possible fall out that being in the public eye could have.

It’s impossible not to root for Jesse and Andrew. They deserve their HEA. Plus, it was fun to see Blue and Kelly again!

I thought Blitzed was fantastic, and it was a great addition to the Rules of Possession series. In addition to being well-written and touching and emotional and funny and gritty and dealing well with some very difficult issues and having incredible characters, this book also kept me thoroughly entertained from the very first page to the very last. Even though Andrew and Jesse are each other's ideal match, it will be difficult to get Jesse to give Andrew a second chance. Their humorous back-and-forth and Jesse's sarcastic demeanor are my favorite aspects of the story. Even though they face many challenges, I admire Andrew's unwavering commitment to Jesse and his willingness to sacrifice anything to build a life with him. After learning about Jesse's history, I was relieved to see that they both handled the news with grace, and that Andrew's family and friends were accepting of the couple. The supporting cast is fantastic, and it's wonderful to see Blue and Kelly succeeding. The conclusion was satisfying, and I hope there will be more installments in this enjoyable series. I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars So good. Funny and emotional.

So now I’m a blubbering mess. I absolutely loved this series and I think that this is where Ms Harmon shines - when she is writing stories where her characters have a delicious, biting wit but also where these stories have a deep emotional element too.

I read The Blueprint and A Deeper Blue some time ago and didn’t even realise that there was a third book in this series. I came across this one by accident and purchased it when I saw that I had given the first two books five star reviews.

All I’ll say is that the two main characters, Jesse and Andrew are …. hilarious, so right for each other, and loyal and committed to their respective causes; Jesse to the kids at Rainbow Harbour and Andrew to his fellow teammates and his sport. One of them is more prickly than a cactus and the other has infinite patience and staying power.

It was such a delight to read of the way that Andrew won Jesse over and how Jesse found unconditional love.

    5 big stars.

This is classic s.e.harmon. Expect lots of sarcasm, prickly but humorous comebacks. Great chemistry. Loved Andrew. And Jesse reminded me of basically every other MC Harmon has ever written, like Rain from spectral files and Journey from coddywomple. And the first guy in the P. I guys series. I adored those three, the author has a template to write MC and thankfully it's never boring. Don't know if I'm a fan of dual povs from this author because there's the risk of both the MC sounding the same. Sarcastic, witty, smartasses. But I think she tried really hard with Andrew and it showed, but yeah if given a choice I'd like her to stick to one MC pov, like she did in the spectral files and p. I. Guys. She's just really good at that.
Don't know what else to say, she just writes really great, realistic, heartfelt, well written romance. Its very immersive, complete and she really takes her time with the world building. It was amazing!

Although this book was more serious than the previous books in the series it was still a really good read. It had an interesting storyline and the characters were well drawn. I will definitely put it in my favourites and enjoy reading it again.

3.0 out of 5 stars not the best in the series

While I loved the first 2 books in this series, this one felt like a disappointment. The beginning was good and pulled me in, to become bored and skipping pages from the middle part till the end. Not much was happening and things that could have caused some action or angst were left to rest in a way that I wondered why the author bothered bringing them in the story in the first place. For example the ex Trace with his vases of flowers. I kept waiting for him to make a scene or something, but nothing happened. Not a bad book entirely, but overall I found it a boring read.

AJ & his prickly pear were a great read. I really enjoyed this one. Dealt with serious matters in a sensitive way and made you fall in love with both characters. Loved Blue & Kelly popping in too
