4.6 out of 5 stars 344 ratings

Two men. Two Families. Too many secrets.

When Castellani security specialist Max Pedretti is reluctantly loaned out to the Esposito Family, he's thrust into close quarters with their youngest Capo, Bricker Soldano. The magnetic pull between them is undeniable, but Bricker is strictly off-limits, for multiple reasons.

For one thing, he's an Esposito.

For another, he's half Max's age.

But most of all, because Max shares a hidden criminal history with Bricker's father—a secret that could shatter the tentative trust building between them.

So Max vows to focus on the job instead, and finds his old skills as a bank robber are put to the test as he works with Bricker and his crew on a heist that could change the power dynamics in Los Angeles.

But when a tragedy reveals a mole in their midst, Max and Bricker must investigate together to uncover the truth, blurring the lines of loyalty and desire.

Can Max and Bricker uncover the traitor and find their way to love, or will past sins cost them everything?

***

Each book in this series tells the love story of a different couple who find their happy ending, as well as a resolution to the mystery they're investigating, but there are cliffhangers to the wider suspense plot for the series.

Great addition to the West Coast Mobsters series! One of the main characters is Max Pedretti, Castellani security guard, who has previously been in the sidelines until now. Max was first mentioned in His Brutal Heart, when Alessandro promotes him. The other main character is Bricker Soldano, loved his actual first name more than his nickname lol, who is a Capo in the Esposito Family. We have been introduced to this family throughout the series, but now we finally have one as a main character!

The Esposito Donna, or Maestra as she prefers, is interested in Max helping Bricker on an assignment working against a common Mob enemy, the Pacific Syndicate or PacSyn.

The first third of the book is introducing the MCs to each other and Max becoming integrated into Bricker’s crew. It felt like Ocean’s Eleven to me, like we are introduced to this ragtag bunch working on a heist. Max even points out that there are a lot of people to keep track of, which I thought was funny because I was having a bit of a struggle the first time I read this as well. I even wrote all their names down to help me remember! Its not a bad thing though, just different as we haven’t had such a big crew (maybe Ciro’s old inner circle?) that the readers had to keep track of.

Regarding the relationship between Max/Bricker, bringing Max in with the crew helps the guys learn more about how each other work and gain respect, which kindles the initial attraction they both felt for each other to grow into a relationship. Max has total Daddy vibes, and Bricker is completely into it! They do remind me a bit of Angelo/Baxter from their book in the Morelli series, sort of a prequel to this one since they happen in the same universe. Baxter, Bricker…even sound sort of the same, how these young dudes like a hot, older man to compliment them? Am I reaching? Probably.

Max is partly there to help Bricker’s crew because certain mess-ups have been occurring during previous heists and they want this one to go well. When it ends very badly, it is revealed there is a mole in the crew and now Max/Bricker are working together to figure out who the mole is. The tragedy in the middle was so sad and because Greene spent the time developing these characters, you actually do feel something when the tragedy strikes.

Now it almost feels like this story could get really heavy, but the way Greene writes adds levity to the story. It isn’t all gloom and doom, there is some lightness, and the characters have great dialogue. We get jokes! Dad jokes, and little quips like calling Julian “Psycho Ken” I laughed a lot a that one!

My main criticism of the book is that there is a bit more told to us about these characters than is shown, since this story feels to be like a sidestep from the main Castellani plot that we have been following. It even acknowledges this when we hear about a Castellani event that went a bit crooked, although I’m fairly certain that the intention is for this to be a main plot point in Book 5, His Guilty Pleasure. I already have it preordered and am so excited!

We have been following Jack, Julian, and Alessandro since Vow of the Vigilante, so Max/Bricker feel sort of new and not as developed yet. I still absolutely loved this book; it really adds to the complexity of this West Coast Mob world that Greene has been building. Greene is one of my favorite authors and there is a reason, these are not just throw away romances. There are plot twists, suspense, action, as well as lots of sexiness! I can read these books over and over again and I find myself amazed how certain things are alluded to keep the reader engaged, but plot twists are revealed and not left hanging…except to get you to come back to the next one, which I am always looking forward to!

Two mafia families, lots of secrets, a mole in the crew, older man with a younger man, and finding love. Max is forced to work with another family to repay a debt. Bricker is forced to bring an outsider into his crew to work on a secret project, which goes sideways due to a mole on the crew. Now they must work together to find the mole and deal with secrets they are keeping all the while falling in love.

His Sinful Need is the fourth book in Leighton Greene's West Coast Mobsters series. I have loved all the books (and her Morelli Family series). This fourth book is another five-star book. The main characters in this book are Max Pedretti, the Castellani head of security, and Bricker Soldano, a Capo for the Esposito family. This is a very well-written story that brings the two families into contact through Max and Bricker.

Exploring other families and how they interact is one of the things the author does very well. I got a good idea of the power structure for the Espositos. The head of the family is a woman, a smart and powerful woman, and that is a nice change. Characters from previous books drop in to help, like Jack with his Pinto driving people around. Or to scare the ever-loving-crap out of people, like a smiling Julian offering to send Max's friend (Bricker) "straight to the cells? They're partially filled in, but the cement's still wet, so --".

The plot has a mystery, lots of action, and a May-to-December romance. The mystery took me as long as the characters to solve. I did not guess the solution earlier and that is always fun. The romance was hot, angsty, and sweet. I pre-ordered the fifth book in the series today. The Morelli Series is being released on audio and I am buying them as they come out. If you enjoy gay mob romances (three years ago I did not know this genre existed), you will enjoy the Morelli and West Coast Mobsters series.

I received an advanced review copy from the author. I had already preordered the book. I read the arc, wrote an honest review, and was happy to receive my paid copy when it was released.

Leighton Greene has become one of my favorite authors when it comes to mafia romances. She is so wonderful at building these complex stories that intertwine with each other while still being unique. Every time I open one of her books, I devour it in one sitting and then think about it constantly while waiting (patiently) for the next one.

In this book, we still have the ongoing conflict between the West Coast families. Max Pedretti, Castellini security expert, is being loaned to the Esposito family to help with an upcoming job. He’s added to Bricker Soldano’s crew. Bricker is unaware that Max has a complicated past with Bricker’s father. Max and Bricker’s relationship definitely had its ups and downs throughout the story. I did feel like they complimented each other well. The age gap was absolutely perfect.

The mystery was also really well done. I had no clue who the mole was because my suspicion kept moving from one person to another. They all seemed like they were capable of being the mole. I loved each person of Bricker’s team (except the mole of course) and cried during the heist. My heart just broke for them all.

I am already anticipating the next book. I may need to start over from book 1 to see how everything is all connected. I really, really loved this one and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves mafia books.

Max Pedretti of the Castellani Family has been sent as envoy to the Espositos, where he's teamed up on a job under Capo Bricker. Bricker is fit, younger than him and prickly, and Max can't help the instant attraction.
Bricker is determined that Max knows that he's to answer to him as Capo despite his age - 28 - and Max knows how to play nice.
Unfortunately a few of the new team he's working with have issues with him, particularly the second Van.
Of course when someone betrays them on a job the two from different families have to work together to find the traitor ... By way of the bedroom of course.
This is full of action, betrayal, steam, laughter and grief, but we get a couple of welcome cameos with Julian and Jack joining the fights.
    Another great instalment.
