At least one bad guy dies. I'm really getting tired of the bad guys getting away. Hopefully the next book won't be another reserection of the bad guys. Why can't the author come up with different ones instead of bringing back the old ones. Has the creative juices dryer up?

4 solid stars for a page turner of a book that I raced through in 3 days. I enjoy reading this series and this book, #9 in the series was a great read. An escaped murderer and gang crew chief by the name of T Nail is out to to torture and kill ex Chicago Police Lieutenant Jack Daniels. He is called "T Nail' because he uses an electric nail gun to torture and murder victims.
This is more of a thriller than a mystery, since the bad guy is identified early on. The suspense is interspersed with humorous exchanges between Jack's old CPD partner, Herb Benedict and her new partner, Harry McGlade, in a private investigation business. Both Harry and Herb find out that Jack is in danger and rush to save her.
One quote on gang initiation: "He remembered his blood-in for the C-Notes; the beating he had to take to join the gang. Thirteen years old, facing a gauntlet of eight guys, all trying to knock him down. They called it a rum runner, because by the time it was over, a brother couldn't stand up straight, just staggered around like a drunk."
I purchased this book from Amazon.

I’ve read ALL of the Jack Daniels novels, as well as many of the crossover novels. In fact, I’ve read them all MULTIPLE TIMES and Rum Runner is hands down, my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE, having reread it at least 6 times (it’s very helpful to know where you can skip through the extended portions of the ever irritating, rude and unforgivably obnoxious, Harry McGlade!!).
Rum Runner takes you back to when Jack was just starting out and you can visually imagine what she looked like and every emotion she felt compared to her current situation and how she got to this point in her life now.
Mr Konrath keeps your attention, sometimes making you laugh out loud when you least expect it. And then with a flick of his fingers on the keyboard, he’ll have you crying for Jack and her current predicament.
I absolutely love how Mr Konrath uses multiple time periods for the characters. As well as giving you the option to read some of his stories with all timeframes intermingled... OR... you can read them in historical order.
Don’t miss a single one of the Jack Daniels books!! I haven’t and I cannot believe I’m going to have to wait almost 9 months for the next book, Old Fashion, to finally come out!!! Please start writing faster, Joe!!
P.S. Someone needs to better “proofread” the online e-book versions because the typos are HORRENDOUS and it takes away from enjoying the reading experience when you have to stop and try to figure out what it is supposed to say.

Rum runner brings together Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels and her assorted band of characters ( Phin, Herb and Harry). Jack and Phin are on vacation in a secluded cabin when a "big bad" from her past crafts a revenge plot. J.A. Konrath rewards long time Jack Daniels fans with lots of embedded references to the long history of the certain characters as well as crossing paths with characters from other series as well. The story, however, may be enjoyed as a standalone title. The three star rating, however, is based on the predictable nature of the plot, the lack of true tension (our hero surrounded by an army of nearly nameless, faceless bad guys - do we really think the great Jack Daniels would be taken down by a set of common street gang types?)

Konrath however delivers his unique mix of quick pacing, dark humor, inappropriate sexual references and lots and lots of kills. It is always nice to spend time with Jack Daniels but I am looking forward to a more worthy adversary in the upcoming Last Call novel.

Idiot criminals-v-idiot cops, Rum Runner is a humorous, tongue-in-cheek satire intertwining the dysfunctional marriage of former Chicago cop, Jacqueline “Jack” Daniels, with the revenge obsession of street gang leader, T-Nail, who Jack had imprisoned for twenty years, the politics of returning to leadership of a gang after a twenty year absence, and the waste of human talent and creativity inherent in criminal gangs. It pokes fun without discrimination at both the good guys and the bad guys while driving home the quotation often attributed to Confucius “Before embarking on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.” It also points out that a trial by fire often makes or breaks a marriage. In the scenario proposed by Mr. Konrath, Jack Daniels’ marriage is definitely seared in a trial by fire.

The characters were consistent with this type of slapstick story. None are particularly deep but I had no problems conjuring up empathy for Jack, and a little for Phin as well. Nothing about Jack’s friends led me to believe they could provide any meaningful help. Del provided an interesting twist toward the end, but the waste of his talent in the gang was criminal in itself.

If you want non-stop action, even if it’s far-fetched, violent and a bit bizarre, by all means buy a copy of Rum Runner. It’s well worth the read.

Jack and Phin are having major marriage problems and go on vacation to reconcile their differences. Staying at McGlade's off the grid "cabin" they are targeted by an escaped killer who was one of Jack's first undercover gang collars. T-Nail will stop at nothing to kill Jack for busting him to prison on a 20 year sentence and paralyzing him. Gathering his gang & other colors to help out he raises an army to kill Jack & Phin. Luckily NcGlade's over the top vacation getaway is an actual fortress for war. Meanwhile, McGlade & Herb team up to help them by making a road trip in the crimebago. A meth addicted parrot, gun toting thugs, & help from old friends brings a full circle to help Jack. Fast & humorous and a little over the top but that's what is expected when McGlade is on the case

How excited I was to find out that J. A. Konrath is continuing with the Jack Daniels series. I have read all of the others and always recommend them. This novel lives up to all my expectations. It is wickedly gruesome, fast paced and totally hilarious.
Jack is finding life more than trying, continually aware that Luther Kite is still at large has put a tremendous strain on her marriage to Phin. After an offer of a weekend get away to rekindle their romance from Harry, things can hopefully get back on track, but Jack's past is never too far away. Revenge is on someone's mind.
    J. A. Konrath has the ability to make me cringe and laugh uncontrollably all within the same sentence. Pure genius! The old gang are all back and up to old tricks and new ones My favourite character has to be Homeboy. Even just thinking about him is bringing a huge smile on my face.
The good news is the next book in the series is already for pre-order. Already clicked and can't wait.
