Rum Runner (Jack Daniels Book 14) Kindle Edition
COULD YOUR MARRIAGE SURVIVE FIFTY KILLERS?
Twenty years ago, a young cop named Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels arrested one of the most sadistic killers she'd ever encountered. She has since retired from the Chicago Police Department in order to raise her toddler daughter.
But old grudges never die. They fester until the right opportunity comes along.
While on vacation in the Wisconsin north woods, Jack learns--too late--that her old adversary is out of prison. He has revenge on his mind. And he's bringing an army with him.
Outnumbered, outgunned, and cut off from the outside world, Jack Daniels is about to learn the meaning of last stand.

From the Inside Flap
Q: Did you always want to be a writer?
Joe: No. I wanted to be a model for husky pants. But then, when I was barely a teen, they stopped making husky sizes.
Damn those clothing designers for shattering my dreams.
Q: When did you decide to become a writer?
Joe: I mean, I'm not offended by the term "husky." Now they're called "relaxed fit" jeans. It's the same thing, but there's nothing sexy about being a "relaxed fit jeans" model. Husky sounds like you're owning those extra pounds, making them work for you. Relaxed fit sounds like you eat too much and are just plain lazy.
What was your question again? Ideas? I hunt through James Patterson's garbage, and steal what he tossed. When Patterson throws out ten pages, that's like fifty chapters.
Ha ha ha! Get it? Because his chapters are so short! I swear, the last Patterson book I read had more chapters than page numbers.
Actually, I just watch old Outer Limits episodes and appropriate the plots, like Alan Moore did with Watchmen.
Q: Who do you like to read?
Blake Crouch, Ann Voss Peterson, Jeff Strand, Henry Perez, F. Paul Wilson, Tom Schreck. Pretty much anyone I collaborate with. Because here's a dirty little secret: when you co-write a book with someone, you kind of have to read the stuff they wrote.
My absolute favorite author is Dr. Seuss. In fact, I tried my hand at writing a few Dr. Seuss-style children's books. Here are the titles:
HOW THE GRINCH STOLE MY WIFE
HORTON HATCHES A TERRORIST PLOT
ON BEYOND DONKEY PUNCH
MARVIN K MOONEY WILL YOU PLEASE DROP DEAD
THE CAT IN THE HAT GETS NEUTERED
GREEN EGGS AND E COLI
THIDWICK THE BIG HEARTED COKE DEALER
MR. BROWN CAN MOO, AND THEY PUT HIM AWAY
THERE'S A WOCKET IN MY POCKET, AND I BLAME CIALIS
BOOMER THE TUMOR
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to sell any of these. I think it may be some sort of rights-issue thing.
Q: What's a work day in the life of Joe Konrath like?
Joe: I wake up early and make some eggs.
Then the smoke alarm goes off, because the eggs are burning because I fell asleep again.
Then I spend ten minutes explaining to the firemen that show up how I'll be more careful next time.
I go back to bed, and the next thing I know, it's around noon. Time for lunch. I want to make an egg sandwich, but I'm out of eggs. And bread. And pretty much everything except some sort of fruit that's been in the refrigerator forever and might be a lime. Or not. It may not even be fruit. So I put it back and think about cooking some pasta but that seems like a lot of work for just lunch, so I go take a nap.
Around three I get up, ready to start my work day, but first I need to eat something. Do pizza places deliver at three? I make a few calls. Nope, no one delivers before five.
I check the fridge. The lime thing is still there, but it looks like it moved from where I saw it last. How odd. Did it move by itself? I'm really hungry, so I decide to give it a try.
It's not a lime, because limes don't have bones.
When I finish eating, I sit down at my computer and write my daily quota, thirty pages.
Q: What's next for Joe Konrath?
Joe:This Spring, Carson's will be releasing my signature scent, called Nocturnal Emission. Available in parfum, eau du toilet, cologne, and roll on. I like the roll on. It tickles my armpits. My goal is to make enough money to buy Nebraska. Then I'll rename it Joebraska, and invite all of my friends to visit. We're going to have a big party in the state capital, Joemaha. You can come, if you want.
Q: Do you want to talk at all about your books?
Joe: Nope. Not really.

Wow, that's a lot of Jack.
If you like your thrillers on the dark side, check out the Konrath Dark Thriller Collective, which includes the books The List, Origin, Afraid, Trapped, Endurance, Haunted House, Webcam, Disturb, What Happened To Lori, The Nine, Second Coming, and Close Your Eyes.
Joe also wrote the Stop A Murder mystery puzzle series, where you become the sleuth and solve brain teasers to try and catch a killer.
He also wrote the sci-fi trilogy, Timecaster, Timecaster Supersymmetry, and Timecaster Steampunk. Even if you don't think you like sci-fi, give them a try. They feature Joe's well-known characters from his other series, and are insane.
With Ann Voss Peterson he wrote the Codename: Chandler thrillers, including Flee, Spree, Three, Hit, Exposed, Naughty, Fix (with F. Paul Wilson), Rescue, and Free.
And, finally, he writes erotica under the pen name Melinda DuChamp, also with Ann Voss Peterson. Those books are probably too spicy for you, so only the brave and bold should seek them out.
Joe writes a lot. You should probably read everything.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIdiot criminals-v-idiot cops, Rum Runner is a humorous, tongue-in-cheek satire intertwining the dysfunctional marriage of former Chicago cop, Jacqueline “Jack” Daniels, with the revenge obsession of street gang leader, T-Nail, who Jack had imprisoned for twenty years, the politics of returning to leadership of a gang after a twenty year absence, and the waste of human talent and creativity inherent in criminal gangs. It pokes fun without discrimination at both the good guys and the bad guys while driving home the quotation often attributed to Confucius “Before embarking on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.” It also points out that a trial by fire often makes or breaks a marriage. In the scenario proposed by Mr. Konrath, Jack Daniels’ marriage is definitely seared in a trial by fire.
The characters were consistent with this type of slapstick story. None are particularly deep but I had no problems conjuring up empathy for Jack, and a little for Phin as well. Nothing about Jack’s friends led me to believe they could provide any meaningful help. Del provided an interesting twist toward the end, but the waste of his talent in the gang was criminal in itself.
If you want non-stop action, even if it’s far-fetched, violent and a bit bizarre, by all means buy a copy of Rum Runner. It’s well worth the read.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2019Format: KindleVerified Purchase4 solid stars for a page turner of a book that I raced through in 3 days. I enjoy reading this series and this book, #9 in the series was a great read. An escaped murderer and gang crew chief by the name of T Nail is out to to torture and kill ex Chicago Police Lieutenant Jack Daniels. He is called "T Nail' because he uses an electric nail gun to torture and murder victims.
This is more of a thriller than a mystery, since the bad guy is identified early on. The suspense is interspersed with humorous exchanges between Jack's old CPD partner, Herb Benedict and her new partner, Harry McGlade, in a private investigation business. Both Harry and Herb find out that Jack is in danger and rush to save her.
One quote on gang initiation: "He remembered his blood-in for the C-Notes; the beating he had to take to join the gang. Thirteen years old, facing a gauntlet of eight guys, all trying to knock him down. They called it a rum runner, because by the time it was over, a brother couldn't stand up straight, just staggered around like a drunk."
I purchased this book from Amazon.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI’ve read ALL of the Jack Daniels novels, as well as many of the crossover novels. In fact, I’ve read them all MULTIPLE TIMES and Rum Runner is hands down, my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE, having reread it at least 6 times (it’s very helpful to know where you can skip through the extended portions of the ever irritating, rude and unforgivably obnoxious, Harry McGlade!!).
Rum Runner takes you back to when Jack was just starting out and you can visually imagine what she looked like and every emotion she felt compared to her current situation and how she got to this point in her life now.
Mr Konrath keeps your attention, sometimes making you laugh out loud when you least expect it. And then with a flick of his fingers on the keyboard, he’ll have you crying for Jack and her current predicament.
I absolutely love how Mr Konrath uses multiple time periods for the characters. As well as giving you the option to read some of his stories with all timeframes intermingled... OR... you can read them in historical order.
Don’t miss a single one of the Jack Daniels books!! I haven’t and I cannot believe I’m going to have to wait almost 9 months for the next book, Old Fashion, to finally come out!!! Please start writing faster, Joe!!
P.S. Someone needs to better “proofread” the online e-book versions because the typos are HORRENDOUS and it takes away from enjoying the reading experience when you have to stop and try to figure out what it is supposed to say.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2016Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI've read all of the Jack Daniels books (aside from the few in between short stories). And I have always loved Harry & Herb the best. Their ongoing banter is priceless and always makes me laugh out loud. Harry has a new pet, Homeboy the meth addicted parrot. Which is almost as great as Slappy the monkey from Cherry Bomb. The plot of this book was okay, there are previous Jack novels that I liked better...it was a quick read but almost felt rushed. Jack also had a horrible attitude problem in the beginning. Hence the 3 star rating. The dialog between Herb & Harry is what saved it for me!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAt least one bad guy dies. I'm really getting tired of the bad guys getting away. Hopefully the next book won't be another reserection of the bad guys. Why can't the author come up with different ones instead of bringing back the old ones. Has the creative juices dryer up?
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAlways enjoy reading J. A. Konrath/ Kilborn books. I love Jack, Phin & over the top Harry! Too funny. Where I would normally give JD books 5 stars, this one just felt a little bit like a filler book. It was a fun quick read, it just didn't really live up to the previous 7 JD novels. I found the zombie jackers chapter a little tough to get through and tad bit annoying, however the action with Jack made up for that bit.
I would also recommend reading the previous books, just so you know the characters background better. With that being said, it really was an enjoyable read with all the twist, turns and action pack edge of your seat Konrath story telling he always delivers.

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseJ.A.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHow excited I was to find out that J. A. Konrath is continuing with the Jack Daniels series. I have read all of the others and always recommend them. This novel lives up to all my expectations. It is wickedly gruesome, fast paced and totally hilarious.
Jack is finding life more than trying, continually aware that Luther Kite is still at large has put a tremendous strain on her marriage to Phin. After an offer of a weekend get away to rekindle their romance from Harry, things can hopefully get back on track, but Jack's past is never too far away. Revenge is on someone's mind.
J. A. Konrath has the ability to make me cringe and laugh uncontrollably all within the same sentence. Pure genius! The old gang are all back and up to old tricks and new ones My favourite character has to be Homeboy. Even just thinking about him is bringing a huge smile on my face.
The good news is the next book in the series is already for pre-order. Already clicked and can't wait.
