About the author
My stories percolate in the shadow of the Malvern Hills in Central England; just a few long strides from a glorious view, though one not so grand or as high as the sand mountain, no doubt. Rain dapples this quaint English town (of course it does) but on clear days you can see for miles as the land ebbs and flows, green and pale fields sliced apart by hedgerow and road. The occasional farmhouse unchanged for decades. Perhaps a boxy Grand Design or two.
This is nothing like Neon, and neither is the town plagued by an overzealous hierarchy. (At least to my knowledge, though fools and kings are so often interchangeable.) So Neon is my escape; while I dream of places like Tokyo and Google the dunes of the Sahara, hoping one day to visit. Who lives here? And what do they do? Why do they do it? These questions I try to answer, pointing the character towards a goal and letting them make their own decisions on the way. I’m often surprised by the result – I hope you are too.

reminded me of blade runner mixed with dune mixed with other sci Fi dystopian mixes. The original blade runner and dune. Thank you Adam.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is an epic tale
This is an epic tale set in the post apocalypse where sand storms have devastated most of the world. It takes you through the trials of Calix searching for Annora who has has been abducted after a scavenging trip outside of Sanctum, their domed town. He realizes they were betrayal by Kirillion the man they thought of as their father.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dystopian Thriller - exciting and immersive.
Neon Sands - Book 1- A Dystopian Future of a Desert Earth - intrigue & romance
Highly recommended. The narrator does an excellent job of keeping the story moving. The audio is whisper-synced, a feature that I really enjoy. Neon Sands is a great start to a dystopian trilogy, I loved the mystery and the world building. I will definitely read all the books, and have bought the box set.
The remnants of human society live in domes in a sea of red sand. The domes are failing, mutations are developing in the restricted gene pool and it seems that humanity is lost. In this harsh landscape, the scavenger crews scour the desert and dig for relics and scrap. The cause of the apocalypse is never stated, great mystery. Obviously there was time and resources to build the domes.
Calix and Annora are orphans sent from other overcrowded domes to Sanctum. Raised by an apparently benevolent father figure, Kirillion, they form a strong bond. When old enough they join the scavenger crews of Walker's crawler. The book starts with a flash back by Calix (presumably in the accident in which he falls from a moving crawler when attempting repairs) of the funeral of one of the other orphans, Ziyad. The details of that day are then reported from Calix, Annora, Linwood and Ziyad's POV.
Then back to the NOW. This flipping back and forth can be a bit disorientating, so hope this helps. A ruined dome is discovered and there is then non-stop action. The ending closed the action at Sanctum but leads Calix further on a quest to rescue Annora
Plains of Ion - haunting life on the fringes
I am really enjoying this noir dystopian trilogy. Plains of Ion is the second book and could stand alone but is best read in sequence, otherwise the brief appearance of Annora in the opening chapter would make no sense. Thought provoking world building. On the Plains of Ion is a fringe town: a matriarchal society ruled by three immortal Queens from which most of the populace has descended. Creepy social manipulation of the men, most of whom are clones called brothers.
There is more action in this story. I like the way the Liberty Race introduces the cast of characters. The Liberty Race is a race on hovercraft around the perimeter of the Plains of Ion. In the centre of the plains is the elitist domed city of Neon. The prize for winning the race is entry to the City of Neon, everyone's dream. An escape from the heat and tedium of the tundra. The race is lethal and so are the competitors. In his search for Annora, Calix scaled the impossibly high sand mountain that separates his world of grey skies and endless red sand and stumbles down onto the dry tundra, hot sun and blue skies of the plains of Ion and into the path of the Liberty Race.
There is enough action, character development, secrecy, sedition and seduction to keep a reader glued to the page. Or in my case, to the headphones. I listened to this story in one day. I do love audio and this was a terrific performance by Stephen Miller. This story arc on the plains of Ion is complete, no cliffhanger. The next step for Calix and his new friends is the infiltration of the near impregnable Neon City.
Flames of Apathy - Book 3 - Dystopian Dysfunctional Technological Existance - complex and engrossing.
Calix continues his search to rescue Annora having reached and breached the walls of the Neon City. A mind numbing life for most. New characters and a revolution. Brilliant world building and fast paced action. But I felt betrayed, the twisted ending and the emotional copout. What was really sickening was the treatment of the "mutants". I was just so invested in Calix and Annora only to be left with a bitter taste in my mouth. Flames of Apathy is a must read if you have followed Calix from the Red Desert Sands, to the Plains of Ion and then to this final act.
