I really didn't want to like this book because of how sensitive it is, but you can't not fall in love with Sawyer and Alma and their journey. It is a 10/10 reading and I hope we get a book for Todd.

As a Liz Durano follower, having loved Evrything She Ever Wanted, I had been warned by the author this book dealt with some deep issues and that it wasn't a happy go lucky book. At the time it came out, I was having a lot of issues of my own so I one-click bought the book, but kept it in my TBR pile. This past weekend I decided to give it a try. I was in a better place emotionally and I had 4 days of Hurricane Florence conditions to survive so I hunkered down and got to reading. OH MY GOODNESS! I LOVED THIS BOOK! I'm floored by how wonderfully Liz writes flawed characters and finds the perfection within her characters imperfections. Sawyer and Alma's story is born in heartache and a harrowing past. You truly feel strong and deep connections with these characters and want to stop anything from getting in the way of healing their hearts. I thoroughly enjoyed the slow building romance. The Taos, New Mexico landscape with each individual earthship made for a unique setting for a wonderful story. I will be recommending this book to my reader group for suggestions as well as telling my close friends it's a must read. Thanks Liz for another great journey of the heart!

Are you searching for a book that will grab your emotions and touch your heart? Discover Breaking the Rules--a compelling story of grief, guilt, and the healing power of love. I'm so glad I found it! (WARNING: SOME SPOILERS AHEAD!)

Guilt and secrets abound in this extraordinary "friends to lovers" romance. Alma's husband Drew, a former Marine, struggles with severe PTSD, but he makes her promise to keep his worsening condition and violence toward her a secret from everyone. When his violence forces her to leave him one month before his suicide, his family blames her for his death. She also blames herself, even though she had to leave for her own safety and that of her unborn baby.

Sawyer Villier, Drew's fellow Marine and best friend, experienced his own PTSD and tries to help Drew. But Sawyer harbors secret feelings for Alma, and Drew ends their friendship when he sees Sawyer hugging Alma. Feeling guilty, Sawyer refuses Alma's call for help as Drew's PTSD escalates into violence. When Drew kills himself a month later, Sawyer is overwhelmed with guilt, believing a romantic relationship with his best friend's widow would be "breaking the rules."

Alma gives birth to a baby boy (Tyler) on the day of Drew's funeral. One year later, she runs into Sawyer at the cemetery and they rekindle their friendship. When he finds her living in a run-down apartment near Los Angeles, he convinces her to move to Taos, New Mexico, where he builds "earthships"--self-sustainable homes off the grid. Eager for a fresh start, she agrees. I loved the author's descriptions of the earthships (yes, they actually exist!), historic Taos, and the breathtaking scenery in that part of New Mexico.

Rules are definitely broken as the friendship between Sawyer and Alma grows into something stronger. Guilt and secrets get in the way, as does interference from Alma's meddling in-laws (Drew's parents), who try to take little Tyler away from her. (He's absolutely adorable, by the way.) Suspense builds until secrets are revealed, leading to more drama before it all culminates in a perfect HEA.

This book includes many friends and family members from the other books in the series, which I haven't read but soon will. You'll find a couple of steamy sex scenes and limited use of the f-word. Kudos to the author for dealing with sensitive issues like PTSD, spousal abuse and suicide. My only complaint: the book needs another round of proofreading to correct typos and punctuation errors. Such errors would normally bring my rating down a notch, but this compelling story deserves nothing less than five stars overall. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I found Liz by way of a recommendation from a friend for Everything She Wants and to say I'm hooked hard...would be an understatement!!! Not only did I read that first book, but consumed all of her books within a week and a half! (I know a great writer when I see one😊) Liz is special as her chara ters and plots are integral to each other and she writes awesome love scenes, lololol, I mean come on...she's a rommance author extraordinaire! This book was well worth the wait, but can be read as a standalone. But if you're like me, read all of her Different Kind of Love novels and you will not be disappointed!!💖

I love military characters, and I loved Sawyer and Alma (and my heart broke for Drew). Liz has a real knack for writing characters that are so human; they have doubts, are occasionally selfish and they screw up (and then make up). There was a lot of backstory for both characters (I would have read an entire book of Sawyer’s life before this book!), both affected by PTSD (I topic I also write about). I was totally engrossed in the emotional struggle, the grief, and the guilt (so much guilt!)… and of course, the building romance. I was, however, surprised by the poor editing: a large number of missing words, misspelled words, repeated thoughts. It’s such a good story, why not take a little extra time to clean up the editing?

I loved this story of Sawyer and Alma! There are lots of sensitive subjects covered, but they are discussed in a very sensitive but realistic way. Sawyer made a war time promise to his best friend and when that promise must be fulfilled, it changes his life forever and that of his best friend's family. Mesmerizing read and I look forward to more by this author!

This book was so emotional with themes of loss and mental health issues but Liz didn't hold back. She took each subject and treated them with love and care! Sawyer and Alma are friends first, meeting when her husband Drew started to date her. When Drew and Sawyer return from war, Sawyer injured and Drew suffering from PTSD they are there for each other through the tough times. After Drew dies, Sawyer and Alma lose touch but meet again by chance. Their relationship is tentative but Sawyer offers a home for Alma and her son which she accepts. Can this new start be the thing they both need to step out of the past?
I loved the characters in this book, from their love for each other to their interactions with the rest of the Characters.
I love Liz writing and the characters she creates!

An ok read. This story taps on the tragic after effect of war on some soldiers but mostly it's about friendships and a second chance at love.
