About the author

Lara Lazenby is a four-time cancer survivor originally diagnosed at the age of seven with stage IIIB Hodgkin’s Disease. A teacher, artist, entrepreneur, writer, and speaker, she helps others embrace their scars and stay groovy despite life’s blindsides. Lara writes about childhood cancer and late effects, physical and emotional scars, caregivers, survivors, and strong women.
Lara wants others to look at their own scars and see:
Strength
Faith
Hope
Healing
And magic
There’s a little superhero in us all
Music is her muse, so when she isn’t writing, you might find her crying or rocking out in the car next to you with the speakers on full blast.
Most women get silver on their 25th wedding anniversary. Steven, Lara’s husband, gave her his kidney. Together they dodge Florida hurricanes and chase alligators back into the pond protecting their little rescue dog, Shanti.

When Lexi's mom senses er daughter's frustration with the continual texts, treatments and the curtailment of her little girl's life of play and adventure, she takes Lex "off the grid." The two go away to search for the adventure and excitement that both had been missing as the cancer threatened more and more Lexi's childhood.Suspending the sickening and painful treatments for the freedom of the road, they take on the burning, arid deserts of Arizona. There they allow themselves to share in the carefree exploration of Sedona's red rock landscape and an almost spiritual visit to Grand Canyon and among the Native Americans they find there.
It is here that I began to share the mystical and spiritual revelations that both experienced. "They're dancing for me, Lexi says as the power of the dancing and drumming become a "blessing for a sick little girl."
"Everything is spirit," the voice of a mystical dancer speaks to her spirit. The thought brings hope to every despairing heart no matter the cause of their pain. "Stories and legend, rituals and rites of passage bring us to our quest," she says. "In the end, through hard work and sweat, we are healed.Through the dance we are healed."
Mom and Lexi return to the dungeon (hospital) of L.A. with more hope than had when they left town a couple of weeks before. We know that Lexi will get better because we succumb to the spiritual awareness the she and her mother bring back from their desert adventures. But I'm left with a sense of anticipation for Lexi's next battle because we know that her story is the author's story also. Neither will succumb to her illnesses. This is an inspirational book. This story will consume you if you are open to Lexi's deeper discoveries. That "everything is spirit" is a thought worth reflecting
upon.
This is am amazing first novel. I look forward to hearing from Lara Lazenby again.

As we follow Lexi's journey, Lazenby takes the reader on a rollercoaster of emotions, giving us a peek into her (Lexi's) most harrowing times - meeting new friends, only to lose them again, the pleas she made with God, & the way she challenged Death - and the fun times she had with her family, friends & acquaintances.
Whilst reading, I often shed a tear for Lexi, for the amount of physical & emotional pain she had to endure at such a young age, whilst at other times I paused to admire her courage and determination to beat death, and survive against all of the odds.
I believe a copy of Lazenby's inspirational story should be made available in all hospitals, to give hope to anyone diagnosed with cancer, & their family & carers. Furthermore, I believe this story will appeal to anyone who has a heart.
