Overview

A story of diversity, friendship and bravery that unfolds as unlikely friends rise above their fears and come to appreciate their differences.

Nine-year-old Lucas is captain of the football team and he's not afraid of anything
...except the monster under his bed!!

When his parents won't believe that he's in danger, he turns to his best friend for advice only to have his secret overheard by Emily, the class chatterbox. By lunchtime, the news has spread. At first embarrassed, Lucas discovers that most kids share his fear and none more than Martin, the new boy. The boys pair up and, to their astonishment, catch their first monster. But the next day, Martin's parents go missing and the trail of clues leads under Martin's bed.
Almost by accident, Lucas and Martin team up with chatterbox Emily and the only two kids who don't believe in monsters. When they crawl under Martin's bed, there's no going back. And unless they find a way to work together, nobody will make it home alive.

Creatively illustrated, and told from the point of view of Lucas and Martin, this is a book you won't want to put down.

About the Author

James Hewison was born in Darwin, on the north coast of Australia. When he was two years old, he survived a deadly sting from a box jellyfish. It should have been frightening but instead, it ignited a fascination for danger and adventure.

James spent his childhood swimming in crocodile inhabited waters, discovering extreme sports, and accumulating scars in other death-defying activities. When he wasn’t risking his own life, he loved reading and writing about people who were. He fell in love with fiction because the possibilities were limitless.

But he had to get serious, or so everybody said. So he put aside fiction in pursuit of a ‘real job’. He finished a degree in pharmacy and another in business and began working full-time.

A few years on, James and his wife had two wonderful children. Soon, they began to enjoy stories and none more so than the tales that he conjured out of his mind at bedtime. Every night he told them new stories, weaving in new excitement and quirky twists. The children went to sleep but, at the same time, James’s passion was waking up from its slumber.

When James’s daughter was eight years old, she asked him to write a story so she could have it anytime, not just at bedtime. So he sat down with an idea for a twist on the classic fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk. He thought five pages ought to be enough, but ideas wouldn’t stop popping into his head. The story he wrote became his first novel, Behind the Twisted Fence. As soon as it was published, he began writing the book you have in your hands.

James has fallen in love with writing fiction and is currently trying to make it his career. He lives in Adelaide, South Australia and travels with his family at least annually to places far and wide.
