Danger Above... Danger Below...
A deadly hunt for a 17th Century legend beneath the coastal waters of Japan.
Multi-award winning, UK bestselling author of The Patmos Enigma and The Lazarus Succession, Ken Fry, is back with a thrilling underwater adventure.
17th Century, Japan
The Legend...
Ama divers, Makoto and Kaho, discover a gigantic pearl deep in the coastal waters of Japan, resembling the head of Buddha, Shakyamuni. At that time, all finds are the property of their Daimyo, Lord Hatakeyema. Their secret is discovered, and before they can bring the pearl to the surface, they are attacked. Rather than face certain death by beheading, the couple commits suicide by drowning --- taking the pearl with them.
Since then, it has never seen the light of day...
The Present...
Maxine D'Argy Steele and Hugo Leyton, renowned researchers, are offered a lucrative deal by an American-Japanese pearl and diamond dealer. Locate the legendary pearl and recover it. They form a team to help them in their quest --- a renowned freediver and oceanographer, and an ama diver, Mizuki, who has motives of her own.
But the problem with legendary treasures is that people will kill to own it.
Two rival factions, the Yakuza, a criminal organisation led by Kazuma, and The Flaming Flag Society led by Yamura, are aware of the expedition, and they will use all their resources to possess the pearl.
With danger from above and from below, Maxine and Leyton dodge bullets and threats as they try to resurrect Shakyamuni's Pearl from its watery tomb.
Read this high adrenaline, hunt and chase thriller and let the action propel you towards a new Ken Fry adventure.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2019“Shakyamuni’s Pearl” by Ken Fry kicks off with a story four hundred years in the past when two young pearl divers in Japan discover a giant pearl. Loath to turn such a treasure over to the local feudal lord, they decide to smuggle it away. Unfortunately, spies have alerted the lord, and he is prepared to capture them as soon as they bring the pearl to the surface. Unwilling to allow this treasure to fall into the hands of evil, Mizuki and Makato dive into the depths, the pearl in hand, never to be found again. Fry shifts the story to the present where a billionaire entrepreneur has learned of the pearl and puts together a team to find it. Their mistake was making the venture public. All hell breaks loose as two opposing militant factions in Japan make it their goal to steal the pearl and use it for their own political and financial gain— the expedition team is caught squarely in the middle.
Mr. Fry is either extremely well-traveled or, educated and equal to the task of unraveling scores of informational sources for input into his stories. I'm convinced it's a combination of the two. Fry incorporates the language, customs, and history of every country and setting in his stories without the slightest hiccup or speed bump. He develops “real” people as characters with all their flaws, strengths, past history and future goals. He builds plot and subplot lines that form a masterful web of thrills, spills, chills, and emotional interactions similar to and oft times better than the so-called “masters.”
I’ve read most of Ken Fry’s thrillers and every time I read another, I can’t help but wonder what quirk of fate kept him from being a household name among readers; names like Stephen King or Michael Crichton or Dan Brown. Why aren’t some, if not all of his books, made into movies like the aforementioned super star authors? Well, whatever that quirk is—it isn’t fair. As another reviewer put it, “And with all due respect to his previous work, Shakyamuni's Pearl might just be his best book yet.” I agree!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2020The tale begins in the 17th century at the historical significance of the Kii Peninsula in Japan. The setting and mood are mourning—the origin of the enormous pearl divulged. Then, seamlessly, the story transports to the modern time, by the tranquilizing mountainside of Switzerland, and the quest for the ancient pearl incites.
Many elements make Shakyamuni's Pearl a superb read, besides the author's mastery writing style. The sheer cleverness of the cast of characters assembled from different continents, including fascinating female main characters, are well developed, and their personalities are vividly illustrated. The tension among the three entities, two villain rivals, and the heroic group, grasps the readers' attention and generates a suspenseful and action-filled thriller. Not only is the author's research in the local's customs and culture are impressive, but also his integration of centuries' old material and up-to-date technology is commendable.
This is an intricate story, mixed with romance, with many exciting twists and turns. The ending is heart-warming, displays the virtue and tenderness of humanity. I strongly recommend this book for its brilliantly writing and multi-layered plot.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2021The cast of characters had me taking dives and turns throughout a southern place of Honokia Japan. I couldn't put the book down.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2019Shakyamuni's Pearl by Ken Fry is a tale four hundred years in the making. It begins in feudal Japan when a young pearl diver and her brother discover a priceless treasure, but rather than cede the artifact to a cruel Lord, they give it back to the sea, along with their own lives. Flash forward to the present, and the hunt is still on. Maxine D'Argy Steele and Hugo Leyton have been tasked with locating the treasure, but they and their team are not the only ones in on the search. The local Yakuza boss and the leader of a gang known as 'Flaming Flag' both know the power of Shakyamuni's Pearl, and they aren't about to let a little thing like a mob war keep them from their prize.
I am a big fan of Ken Fry's work. He has a way of telling a centuries-spanning story from several different directions at once and have it all come together beautifully at the end. And with all due respect to his previous work, Shakyamuni's Pearl might just be his best book yet. The characters are plentiful, but they are all so well-rounded and unique in their own way that there were times when I forgot all about the pearl and simply lost myself in the drama playing out between them. Yes, this is a treasure hunt, but there is heart here as well. Friendship. Family. Love. A deep and resounding connection to the past and to the future and between all things and all people. I especially loved Makato and Mizuki and the bond they shared across the gulf of time. But this IS a treasure hunt, and Fry spared no effort in making it a rousing, sea-faring adventure. The bullets start flying in chapter one, and the action doesn't let up until the last page. Oh, and did I mention that some ancient 'thing' is watching over Shakyamuni's Pearl? No? Well, I'll let you discover that particular gem on your own. It only goes to show that for every mean man, hungry for power, there is always someone or something meaner and hungrier waiting in the wings.
Five big stars for Ken Fry and Shakyamuni's Pearl! Now, Mr. Fry, about getting Coppa his own book.....
