Siren Song: A Standalone Novel of Mermaids, Curses, Love, and Strong Women Kindle Edition
"I enjoyed this mystical tale that moved fluidly between timelines."
Holly Castas is a researcher who studies mythology, ducks the occasional catapult, and might have bubonic plague growing in her office fridge. She’s also cursed.
She thinks she’s entirely ordinary—until the dreams come. Until she learns that she’s all that stands between an ancient curse and stakes she can’t possibly believe.
An academic, a medieval kitchen girl, and a thousand-year-old siren. None of them want the destiny they share.
A note from Audrey: I tell stories of hope, resilience, belonging, and finding what (and who!) matters. I do that in a lot of different genres, but you’ll always get those things in an Audrey Faye book. :)

- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI’m not sure why I didn’t read this a long time ago - I certainly found it a while back. For whatever reason, I was finally in the mood to read it now, and as I knew it would be, it was beautiful.
How remarkable it must be to have a talent like Audrey Faye‘s when everything you write is joyful and lovely. She’s a wonderful writer. She truly is.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThere is nothing I don’t love about an Audrey Faye story. She writes great characters of strength and courage. This one is a stand alone story, and that’s okay. Check out all her series. All great.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI've loved all of Audrey Faye's works. This one is no different. I don't know if this will be a standalone novel (it feels like it is) or part of a series, but it's a FANTASTIC book to read over a weekend, at the beach, or to devour in one night (which is what I did). The storyline is NOT predictable, and the character and plot development is lovely.
The main character is a researcher/postdoc (maybe post doc). She has a necklace that she gets uneasy wearing. One night, her dreams are little too realistic, and during the day she has a hard time defining the boundary of real/not real and how much her dreams are really influencing her awake moments. Pretty soon, she notices a parallelism between her dreams and her real life and it's interesting to see how or if they intertwine.
Take a chance on this book. Read it. Finish it. Then go read the rest of Audrey Faye's works. Totally worth every second. :)
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhile I normally love Audrey Faye's books. This one was just so-so for me. I thought about it a lot as to why the book didn't resonate with me like her other books do.
Some minor spoilers follow so stop reading here if you want to be completely spoiler free.
What really sells me on Audrey's books is the character development. The main character here, Holly, is rather boring. She's not bad, just not a well developed character. The more interesting characters are the ones that are not explored in depth, Jane and Monster. They have a more interesting back story, and seem to be more compelling characters but are not well developed.
The flash back/dream sequences were also off-putting. They seemed jarring at times. As they bounced back and forth without a good setup/explanation.
Finally the curse was not adequately explained and explored.
Overall it's not a bad read, but definitely not one of her best.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt took me a while to get around to reading this one, but once I started I finished it in one sitting. I found it to be a really fun read and, as usual, I found that I was crying throughout the story. I have no idea why, but I do that with all of Audrey's stories. She does not like to mention it, but some of her best work she wrote under the name of Debora Geary...if you like reading her work you MUST read her tales under that name. You can find them right here on amazon. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBased on the cover, I was ready to be disappointed. It seemed more like something seen on graphic novels. At least the kind of graphic novels I don't read. But, surprisingly, it was a good story with bits of interesting lore thrown in and a host of strong female characters. Holly begins having dreams that, without sharing too many details, must be based in reality. They're both frightening and mysterious. Too mysterious for someone who loves research to ignore. The story reflects how Holly's life begins to run parallel to the dreams from another time and how she must find the solution before time runs out.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have a basic need for hope, so sirens and curses are not my usual intake. This siren and curse story really hit my sweet spot. I love a book that you leave feeling stronger and better than when you arrived.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved this book. It's the first of Audrey Faye's books I've read since she stopped writing the Modern Witch Series, which is one of my favorites. This one was great, full of interesting characters with a zest for life and a passion for their own stories. It was interesting to have a book written by an author I loved so much in another series and see how different but similar her writing is. Excellent book, I'm sad it's a standalone, I would love to continue to get to know these characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Audrey Faye Tour de force
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAudrey Faye is a brilliant writer and I heartily reccomend her Ghost Mountain series and the Karma Corps series.
This stand alone novel is unclasifiable with a strong remale lead who uses all aspects of her skill and personality to try and defeat an ancient curse.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is also called sirens as well as wanton to the death which really confused me when searching for it under the first name. I was told I already had it but it was under the second title.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis has two titles which really confused me. I think this was originally in an anthology and the title sirens relates to the specific story but wanton to the death shows in the header which as I say is confusing. I kept trying to buy but already had it but under the other name. I have all Audrey Faye's and Deborah Geary's books

5.0 out of 5 stars A book about Sirens with its own siren call
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt caught me, as all of Audrey's books do, within seconds of starting to read.
This is one of the few standalone books I have read and wished it was a series.
Go - dive in and discover this for yourself.
