The Tango School Mystery (The Headline Hero Series Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 127 ratings

1960s Brighton, England... Take your partners… as crime reporter Colin Crampton dances to foil an assassination before the music fades.

★★★★★ “Another wonderful read - highly recommended!”

A hitman with a legend in his crosshairs.
The tango school that hides a mystery.
A reporter chasing danger for a headline.

Blood seeps through the ceiling at crime reporter Colin Crampton’s favourite restaurant while he’s dining with his feisty Australian girlfriend Shirley Goldsmith. Colin discovers a dead body upstairs. He reckons he’s cracked the story when he links the murder to a sinister figure who’d backed war-time Nazis and quit Britain.

But that’s just a theory. Colin needs evidence to nail the killer. It looks like a tango academy lies at the heart of the mystery. But the truth is even stranger. Colin tangles with a professor of witchcraft and a dance instructor as he races against time to foil an assassination. The laughs are never far from the action when Colin and Shirley face dangers they never anticipated as they race to crack the case.

Wherever reporter Colin Crampton of the Brighton Evening Chronicle shows up, a dead body is sure to appear. Like when he and his girlfriend are out to dinner, and her rare steak gets a lot rarer when blood starts dripping from the ceiling.

It’s 1964, and Crampton’s reporting seems to always connect to a crime wave. The dead man turns out to be something of a closet Nazi. And then Crampton’s publisher discovers his brother his missing, and Crampton gets the assignment to find him. Turns out the missing man was interned during World War II for his Nazi sympathies. And there’s a man running for public office who seems to share those Nazi sympathies.

And what is it with this tango dance studio? All the suspect roads seem to lead right to it.

“The Tango School Mystery” by Peter Bartram is the newest installment of the Colin Crampton mysteries, and it includes Bartram’s trademark humor (often dark, like that rare steak) and insight into the journalism of the 1960s (having worked for a newspaper in the early 1970s, I can testify that the characters at Crampton’s newspaper fit the period, even across the Atlantic).

Crampton manages to finesse his way out of some seriously uncomfortable (and borderline illegal) situations. He hires a lock picker to get inside a delivery van. When he bangs on the door of the van owner’s house, he finds a dead body. He manages to extricate himself and alert the police without the police knowing his involvement.

What Crampton comes to realize is that this is no ordinary series of deaths; something major is afoot, and he has to find out what it is.

“The Tango School Mystery” is a fun read, like all of the Crampton mysteries. Bartram, himself a former journalist, depicts newspaper life in the 1960s with humor, insight, and even affection.

Crampton and his girlfriend/sidekick Shirley always keep me entertained and amused. Sometimes I laugh out loud at Crampton's perspecctive. Tango School is the best I have read so far in the series. The book weaves several mysteries together and held me all the way through.

The main subject or theme is not one I would knowing pick up but it kinda snuck on me and worked surprisingly well as a light read, unusual for the subject.

The book is funny, in a British sort of way, but still a serious mystery with a bit of action and its share of surprises. Characters are likable and memorable.

Bartram packs a lot into this well-crafted, short book. No typos, bad grammar, misused words or other distractions noticed.

Recommended for fans of the British action mystery or anyone who enjoys a pleasing, intelligent lightweight read.

I look forward to more Crampton and will go back and look for other books in the series I have missed.

Never saw this book coming, not only enjoyable but had humor mixed it making a great read.

For a news reporter who seems to want to do his job seems to jump into some deep things.

I neglected to read the book summary before I began reading, so it took a few pages to get into the story, but when I did, I couldn’t put it down. It takes place after WWII when Nazis and Fascist sympathizers hatch a plan in G.B. A newspaper crime reporter is drawn into it, with twists and turns and humor. Wonderful book - I was sorry when he solved it and the book was over. Looking forward to reading the next one!

Would you really go to Paraguay to have your hair dressed by Adolph Hitler??? I have enough of a problem getting an appointment with my local hairdresser. If you ever wondered what happened to the Nazi after the war, then I recommend this book to you.

It is always nice to revisit Brighton with Colin Crampton and Shirley Goldsmith (and even the Widow Gribble). This time he mixes it up with a group of fascists whose ultimate plan for control involves the assassination of Sir Winston Churchill. It's odd how some of the things Churchill talks about in a later chapter mirror some of what is going on in the United States today.

    Highly recommended!

Amusing mystery thriller, set in Brighton, England. Our detective is a journalist on the local paper, though journalist may be too fancy a name for him. He has a confident Australian girlfriend whom I’d like to see more of, and the location in this seaside town was what made it fun for me. I will probably read another in the series.

Well, there we go. Another brilliant story from the pen of Peter Bartram. Colin doesn't half get himself into some scrapes. Nearly drowning on a ducking stool, and getting himself and Shirley trapped in a pig shed with starving pigs, a Nazi sympathiser and a fat gun toting ex latrine, ex army Captain. Along with a hoity toity antiques dealer, a tango teacher who wasn't. Also having to track down the erant brother of his Holiness and the brief appearance of Churchill, if he wasn't a journo Colin would have made an excellent detective. And after all that, I hope Colin and Shirley had a very happy Xmas.
Lots of excitement, plenty of action and loads of humour, mostly from Colin's brilliant one liners, these books are an absolute must to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Tango School Mystery. Crampton waltzes through a dire situation from the very start.

The Tango School Mystery - Kindle edition. Brighton's ace reporter, Colin Crampton, has a new mystery to solve, a mystery dropped on him from on high by the seemingly always absent and aloof editor. There's also the murder victim who unpleasantly ruins the hero and his girlfriend's romantic evening meal, from not such a great height. This is just the start of another fast-moving Crampton of the Chronicle adventure where eccentrics rub shoulders with villains in 60s Brighton.
The totally unexpected plot developments and subsequent twists and turns all the way through add a real boost to this novel. Well worth reading at the very first opportunity. The Crampton of the Chronicle series is the best British crime fiction that's come along for a long time.

I’ve been reading “Crampton of the Chronicle” on n off fir a while. Although not reading in order, I think this story is one of the best.

It a great story, with real, lovable characters, Some snark n more than fair share of comedy moments- I think they’d make a great mini series.

I loved this booked; Thankyou Peter Bartram

I have read all the crampton novels. They combine gentle humour with a thriller. The style is refreshingly old fashioned with good guys and bad guys. There are glimpses of life back in the 60s. I love these books and ration myself to a few pages at a time to make them last.
Very much looking forward to the next one.
    A highly entertaining read.
