4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 32 ratings

"A velvety trip packed full of history, mystery and suspense. Nancy Jardine writes fluidly and skillfully to create a very unique novel that holds the attention until the very last page..."

A frantic search for priceless jewels. Greed beyond reason. Shadowy characters, hired gunmen and treacherous villains abound.

A weird invitation to Germany involves Keira Drummond in an international hunt for a collection of extraordinary jewellery, originally owned by a Mughal Emperor. The last known owner was a Dutch family in 1910, but who can Keira rely on, since distrust is rampant among the living relatives that she meets?

Teun Zeger hasn’t met any of his third-cousins before his equally cryptic invitation to Heidelberg, and isn’t sure he’ll ever like them. Keira, is an altogether different matter, and she’s not his relative!

Who is the deadliest cousin, determined enough to hire thugs to tail Keira and Teun when they pair up to unearth the jewellery? And who has the ultimate mystery item that’s even more precious than the Mughal jewels?

Greed, suspicion and murder are balanced by growing family loyalty, trust and love.

“…story telling is enticing, exciting, and sensual as well as skilful as she weaves a plot of intrigue across Europe.”

"This is a skilfully paced and plotted novel, in which the various story-lines only come together at the very end.”

This book will appeal to readers of Romantic Suspense who enjoy intrigue, a complex plot with appealing well-drawn characters, set in fantastically portrayed world-wide locations. And if the reader is interested in Ancestry, and Gemology, it will delight even more so!

From the Author

Having created a family tree for another mystery romance novel, I enjoyed the experience so much I decided to design a much more complicated ancestral line with a deeper mystery full of twists and quirks, and a mystery within the mystery. TOPAZ EYES is the result. I hope you will enjoy its tour.

“A peculiar invitation to Heidelberg embroils Keira Drummond in the search for a mysterious collection of extraordinary jewels once owned by a Mughal Emperor.” This premise launches the book called Topaz Eyes by Nancy Jardine. Once you start this exciting romantic suspense, you won’t be able to put it down. I especially like the fact that it is set in such fascinating places throughout Europe and that it is about fabulous jewelry, two of my favorite topics. Keira and her newfound cousins go on a hunt for the jewels, which uncovers long-held family secrets and leads to murder, intrigue and love.

"Topaz Eyes" by Nancy Jardine is an intriguing mystery that will keep you in suspense until the very end.

This book is fun to read -- it has all the delightful elements of a page-turner: intrigue, mystery, romance and action. With jewels, secrets, changing locales, and sexy, romantic diversions, Ms. Jardine hooked me. An enjoyable, entertaining page-turner!

A tale of intrigue and gorgeous jewellery and I knew as soon as I saw the cover art and read the first few lines of this story that I was going to love it.
The central characters meet for the first time in a café in Heidelburg and the shared chemistry between the two of them sizzles up from the pages. The playful verbal fencing is something that continues throughout the narrative and kept me smiling all the way to the end.
Their mission is to help other members of their disparate family locate some valuable, missing jewellery. The story moves between Europe, the United States and Scotland with each location perfectly maintaining its place as the backdrop to the many twists and turns of the plot. Alongside this, is the developing romance between Teun and Keira.
I did find some of the family names a little difficult to remember because they are mostly Dutch in origin, so I had to keep referring to the family tree included in the book when I first started to read the story – a great idea to have it there! Other than that, the narrative flowed very well, the characters were believable, the locations beautifully represented and the jewellery was an amazing spectacle to see in my mind’s eye. Just wish I could own it myself for real!
A great read that I thoroughly enjoyed and that I can recommend to anyone who loves either romance, or mystery or both.

A peculiar invitation to Heidelberg embroils Keira Drummond in the search for a mysterious collection of extraordinary jewels once owned by a Mughal Emperor; a hoard that was last known to be in the possession of Amsterdam resident, Geertje Hoogeveen, in 1910.
Who among the progeny of Geertje- hitherto unfamiliar third cousins brought together for the quest - can Keira rely on? Distrust and suspicion among them is rife.
Which one is greedy, and determined enough, to hire thugs to tail her… and worse… as she travels to Vienna and Minnesota? Can Keira even trust Teun Zeger - a Californian she is becoming very drawn to - as they pair up to unearth the jewellery?
As they follow a trail of clues, will they uncover the full collection before the hired gun kills them? Details remain furtive and undisclosed until danger and death forces their exposé. And who harbours the ultimate mystery item that is even more precious than the Mughal jewels?
Greed, suspicion and murder are balanced by growing family loyalty, trust, and love.

Review: This was a great romantic suspense book. I enjoyed it thoroughly from start to finish. There are alot of players in this book and at first it seemed a bit overwhelming to keep them straight but the author was able to get me through it without too much trouble. This story is never boring or lacking in anything entertaining. So if you like suspenseful romance then this is the book for you. Get ready to enjoy

Topaz Eyes is a romantic suspense at its best. Motivated by the find of an exquisite ring, a jeweler in Heidelberg does research and comes to believe this is one of twenty pieces of the Tiru collection that somehow came into his family generations before. Jensen then commissions a family history, contacts distant family members and a woman who was close enough to one of the women in the family to potentially be a recipient of some of the pieces. The quest set forth at the mysterious meeting in Heidelberg, with Zaan, Teun, and Keira taking the lead roles to complete the quest, is to find all the pieces and exhibit them. The search covers multiple cities in the US, Amsterdam, Edinburg, and of course Heidelberg. The stakes are high and as Keira and Teun both become aware they are being followed separately, as well as when they are together, trust is not high between the cousins. Multiple homes across the continents are broken in to, businesses are burglarized, and individuals are assaulted. It’s not obvious who is behind the mischief. The pieces come together slowly as none of the cousins wants to share all they know. Jardine spins an intricate plot with cultural overtones and all that makes discovering family history a little risky.

I love reading Nancy Jardine's novels and this one was no exception. Her story telling is enticing, exciting and sensual as well as skillful as she weaves a plot of intrigue across Europe. The protagonist, Keira Drummond, is strong, determined and self-assured as she embarks on a mystery involving a family she doesn't belong to, jewels she's never seen, and Teun Zeger, a rather dashing American.

With a very helpful family tree at the start of the book, the characters with their unusual names are easy to follow as the mystery deepens.

This was the perfect holiday read; gripping and engaging with, of course, a romance which Nancy Jardine writes so well.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant and Exciting Read

This book was listed as a romance, which it is, but it is also an exciting story involving a priceless collection of jewels, murder and intrigue. I got into the story very quickly, no long run-ups in this book! The characters are well developed and believable, and at times the tension was palpable. Keira and Tuan really didn’t know just who was behind the terrible things that happened as they followed the various trails leading to the jewels, could it possibly be the very man who set the search up, or could it be another cousin? Loved the discovery of the last piece of puzzle where they least expected to find it (no spoilers in this review!). Altogether a very pleasant and exciting read.

An excellent read that had me engrossed in translator Keira Drummond’s search for the extraordinary collection of Mughal jewels that brings a group of strangers together in Heidelberg. I was swept into her relationship with a Californian, Teun Zeger. His cousins were integral to the plot and craftily portrayed in such a way as to create a sense of unease, shared by the main protagonists. The quest takes the characters to many cities, mainly in Europe, and the settings are vividly described, giving one a real sense of the wonderful places – some of which I know quite well, like Amsterdam. Although not a crime novel as such, the shadowy characters following Keira and Teun keep one alert, and distrustful of even innocent characters. But then when it comes to families and jewels, it is easy to stray. What’s lurking in your past? What’s hiding in your attic?

Now want to read Nancy Jardine’s Celtic tales.

When Keira Drummond, an Edinburgh-based translator, receives an invitation to a gallery opening in Heidelberg, she sees it as an opportunity to revisit a city she worked in and loved some years previously. The invitation, however, turns out to be a pretext for an unexpected gathering, at which a plan is hatched to re-unite some family jewels long-since dispersed, for an exhibition. The plan has been drawn up by Jensen Amsel, a wealthy collector, and also present are Zaan de Raad, an antique dealer, and Teun Zeger. The three men are distant cousins. Keira, though connected to the family, is not related to them by blood, and knows none of them. Fascinated by the prospects, she becomes deeply involved in a quest that takes her to Minnesota, New York, Vienna and back to Heidelberg. It soon becomes apparent, however, that others are on the trail of the jewels and, sensing that she is being followed, Keira does not know who she can and cannot trust. This is a skilfully paced and plotted novel, in which the various story-lines only come together at the very end.
