4.4 out of 5 stars 1,847 ratings

There’s a new squad in town…

Seniors, Phyllis Habernackle and Char Bailey are witches with a problem. Dealing with the recent loss of one of their oldest and dearest college friends, the women discover the dearly departed has bequeathed her estate to them! Unfortunately, she didn’t leave it only to them. She also left it to two other old witches. Decades ago, the five women had been inseparable while together attending the Paranormal Institute for Witches, situated high in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains in cozy, Aspen Falls, Pennsylvania. But thanks to a betrayal no one saw coming, they’ve been feuding ever since.

Now the four witches, along with one geriatric mother, must come together to discover what tore them apart all those years ago and unravel a new mystery that is bigger than any of them could have ever anticipated. Will it pull them closer together? Or will the wedge that kept them apart for decades widen and ruin their friendship forever?

For fans of The Witch Squad Cozy Mystery Series - this new spin-off features an off-beat cast of hilarious witches that will have you laughing out loud. Rejoin old friends, Phyllis, Char, and Vic and meet new friends Loni Hodges and Gwyn and Hazel Prescott. Plus enjoy cameo appearances by some of your favorite characters from The Witch Squad.

I enjoyed the friendship among the witches. Hazel was a bit much at first, but she grew on me. I love Gwyn, but wish she would give her mother a little more freedom. The story was fast paced and it kept me guessing. All the characters were well thought out and believable, I just wish I knew more about Lonnie. She was a hoot! I also believe anytime is a great time for French fries!

Let me tell you, I had the most interesting and bewitchingly funny week reading That Old Witch by MZ Andrews. Each day that I read about the five elderly witches who were trying to "sleuth" their way to discover who murdered their long-time friend, I can't stop myself from grinning and laughing so hard. This coven is giving a whole new meaning to the adage, "Age is just a number".

Hazel Prescott may be the oldest among the group, but she's the liveliest, loudest and funnest of them all. Yes, she's so much fun to be around, wreaking havoc to the village and causing misery to her daughter, Gwynnie. Speaking of the witch, Gwyn is the exact opposite of her mom - she's so uptight, a little prude and in control. Next favorite of mine is Loni Hodges, most hysterically mysterious and paranoid among the five. Her disguises had me laughing all the way down to Aspen Falls and her affinity to cats made me love her even more. Phyllis Habernackle and Charlotte Bailey, they're a cute tandem, both have families of their own and a cat to boot, but I still have yet to discover more about them.

So far, so good, really. Their little coffee coven got me up and hooting three nights in a row; if not for work or for my kids, I could have finished reading the whole book in one night. I really love the antics and the misadventures that these old witches had been through. Imagine a very old grandmother hot-wiring a car in the middle of the night while her companions are on a stakeout - now that's really something, right?

Will be spending the next few days reading about Hazel and her "trip" to Las Vegas, so hang on tight, witches!

As a reader of the Witch Squad series, I expected to be enthused about this new series that features the grandma generation of the Witch Squad girls. Somehow it fell short of expectations in my opinion. While I enjoyed the mystery aspect about the deaths of 2 witches, what I didn't like was the "personalities" and "conversations" the older witches had throughout the book. They seemed mean to one another and disrespectful of the person's feelings. Loni and Hazel received the brunt of this verbal nastiness, but everyone called each other out in unpleasant words. For a group of friends, they seemed about as friendly as a pet snake. I prefer a little more kindness towards friends in life and in reading.

There is only one major problem with That Old Witch. I finished the book and now have to wait for the second one.

That Old Witch is a stand-alone book, so there aren’t cliff-hangers.

The first chapter's descriptions would have merited a AA+ from any English teacher. "Baritone waves of thunder..." awesome and it only got better. The descriptions put me right into the story and have kept me there. Of course, I can relate, because those old witches are from my generation and really do things I do or would like too.

I’ve am totally hooked on M.Z.Andrew’s Witch Cove cozy mysteries. I have all of those books. Now I’m hooked on the Coffee Coven mysteries. I do not give out 5 stars casually.

If you’ve read the Witch Cove mysteries you will recognize some of the character. Char seems much different, from the character, in the Witch Cove mysteries...not as huggy, squeezey sweet, as she seemed before. I'd forgotten about Vic being a Chihuahua. Phyllis seems to be the same. I guess Mercy's mom didn't get with the Sergeant, after all.

The characters and their actions are dead on accurate. Hazel I wanted to strangle and then I would laugh, at something she said. I am thinking Gwyn may have been a wee bit too over-protective. Loni's actions and responses seem just about perfect, for a recluse. I am wondering what caused that.

Kat seemed the most powerful, of the witches; but, then the others seemed to let their gifts go. I can't help wonder why they didn't use their powers to erase a few lines and wrinkles or to help with finances a bit, when they seemed bothered with them (Gwynn)

I most, definitely, will download future books, in this series and The Witch Cove mysteries. One is about college age witches and the other senior citizen witches.

If you like graphic sex scenes or over use of swear words skip these series, as you won’t find that here. LOVE LOVE LOVE these books.

I enjoyed reading this. I liked all the characters with the exception of Gwen. I didn't care for the banter she had with her mother. I'm hoping the next book she will stop being the control freak.

Gotta love quirky old witches who solve mysteries. These old gals have fun and stay one step ahead of the reader. This author knows how to spin a good yarn. I could not put it down. Characters and situations are fresh and believable. I love the mother/daughter conflicts and the richness of the relationships within the story. Witches are being killed. Why and by whom is up to our aged coven to discover. Come along for the ride. It’s worth your time.

This story was so well written, that up until the killer was revealed I had no idea who it was. My first two guesses were completely wrong 😜. The ladies are all strong, vibrant and independent personalities, that seem to mesh very well together, even with their eccentricities. My favourite character is Hazel, she is incredibly outspoken and one can’t but fall in love with her bluntness, honesty and cheekiness.
This book is a definite must read for lovers of Cozy Mysteries. I am anxiously awaiting book 2 and the next adventures of Char, Phyllis, Loni, Gwyn and Hazel 👍

The Golden Girls as witches. The story is funny and fun. The plot is a bit contrived but the characters are delightful. I enjoyed the situations and the mystery. I liked the potential romance and the ending. I will read the next in this series.
