Review

"A sci-fi made by, and for, sci-fi geeks—and since I am one of those, I loved that aspect. It's specifically space opera, and it's got a feel somewhere between 'Star Trek' and 'Battlestar Galactica.'"
— Kevin Carlson, Writing in Obscurity

"With worldbuilding, characters, and plot that is only comparable to
Star Wars, Alan Dell's The Re-Emergence, a novella in the Augment Saga, is a promising start to an original and imaginative series that will no doubt stand the test of time."
— Maya Grimley, Maya's Reviews

"
The Re-Emergence is a great novella, perfect if you like military sci-fi or the first contact themes, spiced with a bit of sentient AIs. Excellent as a self-contained episode, and really enjoyable to read!"
— Jamedi, JamReads

"I would recommend
The Re-Emergence for fans of first contact sci-fi, those looking for themes of survival and resilience, and the play between technology and human nature."
— Ashley Brennan, FanFiAddict

"The Re-Emergence is a wonderful tale that brings together beings of all different backgrounds to form a singular crew."
— Tabitha Tomala, Behind the Pages

Great start and introduction to an interesting series!

Great start and introduction to an interesting series!
The Re-Emergence is a fun novella which wraps up its own short episode with adventure and gives the reader a taste for the background to the soon to be published full length novel (The Grave of the Gods). This is Alan Dell's first published work. I have been following his project with interest while he has been creating it and I look forward to the full length novel this short story sets up. It is a quick and enjoyable introduction if you would like to consider his future works. I like that this short story sets up some of the back history of the coming novel rather than coming into the next book without any background or having it given as a short "prologue" of a larger novel. This gave us a full story and characters to enjoy while setting up that pre-history.

This novella impressed me. Will dive into Book 1 next!

    -Uplifted AI (Good guy too!)
-They make it to our Solar System.
-The humans will likely find evidence of both and get to go up against the ancient BBEG.

Starts out with Sev detecting the old adversary then stuff really goes Space Opera.

Has just the right amount of tension I like, "How ever will they get out of this one?" vs the tension others may enjoy, "Oh my god?! Are they gonna die?"

Introduces just enough mysteries to get me invested in a setting. That's how I go with stories most times:

Initial Hooks---Character actions---How they tie into each other vs the setting---Then you can have some quiet reflective moments.

Read it over two sittings. The action is well-paced and the world building is intriguing. Terms were a bit confusing but not hard to infer the meanings of after a few instances. My eyes couldn’t keep up with the action. A good argument to learn how to speed-read.

I can’t talk about THE RE-EMERGENCE without first talking about how it ends.

I often use novellas to try out an author’s writing style, a particular sub-genre, story concept, etc because it’s a shorter commitment compared to a full-length novel. Novellas that fit within a series, like this one does, often gives a tantalizing glimpse into a much larger story.

Dell capitalized at such an opportune moment– the epilogue– and from it emerged the foundation of another story that left me thinking about everything I just read. The ending that was a beginning sparked my curiosity to uncover the full scope of the world and its lore. I was left in awe and it was one of my favorite parts. In a matter of moments, I knew this was a story that I had to see continue in book one, FROM THE GRAVE OF THE GODS. Just a note- this novella was released months before book one, and as someone who reads in pub order, I believe it’s the intended place to begin.

It’s said that things often come in threes, and recently for me it’s been books that opened with a non-human perspective. Unit-17’s POV set things up so when we reach the first chapter, I liked that we knew something the characters didn’t. Dell expertly lays out fascinating pre-history in the prologue, setting the mood for the entire drama set in space.

Ah, first contact sci fi. I have always found these stories thrilling because of the possibility of encountering intelligent life beyond Earth. Aside from the excitement of the unknown, what I truly appreciated about the story’s first contact was how the advancement of technology came into play–the idea of a civilization “catching up”–and the depictions of the alien races. Substantial world building involved creating alien races– such as a bird-like alien race– with its own distinct morphologies, culture, and way of life. Engaging with the characters and the plot became easier once becoming familiar with the the new terminology and concepts (and thank you for adding a glossary at the end!)

The vastness of space and time, as well as the number of stories that are regarded as myths and legends, are some of the things this story makes me reflect on. Perhaps for something much older than us, what seem like millennia are only a few moments. And for the ancient wanderers in this story, there was no lost, forgotten history. That’s a bit chilling. Some aspects of the black forest of space were touched upon. This might be more relevant in book one. However, Dell delves into the themes of caution and uncertainty in interstellar encounters, along with potential approaches and outcomes.

The environment was used in two ways- to foster harmony and to create conflict. Anytime an AI is sentient, I’m in. There were moments when the tensions were tangible and connected to morality, loyalty, and duty. I always like to imagine what I would do myself. The action moved at a rapid pace, and by the time I knew it I had half the story finished.

Now, I think this is just me being me because no other reviews mention this at all, but one aspect I keep coming back to are the character’s internal thoughts. Being given a lot of the characters thoughts helped me understand them better and the situation in that moment but I like to see more of that translated into sensory descriptions or character dialogue. I’d love for some sensory feedback added in addition such as a chill creeping up their body, a deafening silence broken only by the audio crackling, throbbing at their temple with futile attempts to make sense of things, etc. I want to feel what they’re feeling like I’m there. Having more of this would’ve truly hit home for me.

Overall, I really enjoyed this first contact sci fi novella. Dell’s creativity, world-building,and plotting were strong. I needed a little more description included that focused on the senses. I am excited to continue the series and see where it leads.

I would recommend THE RE-EMERGENCE for fans of first contact sci-fi, those looking for themes of survival and resilience, and the play between technology and human nature.

When Satellite AI 17 is downloaded by crew member Da’Kora it couldn’t be happier. After all, there is only so much long distance space chess one can play with the other sentient satellites. What the crew of the Qesh’kal ship doesn’t realize is that Sev, aka 17, was part of an ancient alert system. A system put into place to warn of impending invasion from the Ancient Wanderers. A race when last seen nearly wiped out the entire system. But the crew will soon discover Sev’s origin and the Ancient Wanderer scout ship lurking in their path.

Sev has a deadpan approach to speaking with the crew. Though it isn’t sarcastic on purpose, the AI uses whatever knowledge it has of the beings on its crew to interact with them. Considering its only companions have been other sentient satellites, it doesn’t fully understand what choices organic beings may make. Sure there is logic and other tools it could use, but deep down humans have emotional responses that don’t always follow a logical path. And unfortunately, Sev will have to find that out the hard way.

The relationships among the crew will engage readers just as much as the fast-paced action. When the crew discovers the Ancient Wanderer ship and battle ensues it's an all-out fight to the bitter end. Alan K Dell carefully layers the outside influences of the ship battle and the inner turmoil on deck, escalating the writing to another level. There is never a dull moment.

The Re-Emergence is a wonderful tale that brings together beings of all different backgrounds to form a singular crew. While at first, they may not fully trust each other, their actions will open their eyes to the internal bias they carry and forge a strong path for character growth. This is an exciting sci-fi novella with great character development and fast-paced action.

Alan K. Dell presents a well-written imaginative and original space sci-fi novella that follows a ship navigated by an intelligent bird-like race known as the Phori.

After this ship, known as the ‘Qesh’Kal’ intercepts a probe from an old satellite network the crew come to realise one particular satellite is self-aware and has even evolved. ‘Satellite 17’ becomes a personality on the ship and even begins to bother the crew by occasionally interfering while also exploring the concept of ‘Synthetic Evolution’. Ultimately, ‘Sev’ becomes a vital part of the ship and even helps during a potential siege from ‘Ancient Wanderers’.

With some wonderful description and plenty of new terminology for the genre (the glossary makes a fun addition) any fan of space sci-fi or action will enjoy this one and it certainly immersed me. I’d definitely be interested in reading the further books set in this universe.

‘A nervous anticipation hung in the hallway, the only sounds being the occasional cough or shuffle of clothing. An oppressive darkness replaced the corridor’s usual warmth…’

Imagine Star Trek: the space ships, the crew, the mystery and action. Now, imagine it not having humans at all, but an alien race with feathers, an ancient telepathic warrior race, and a sentient AI program. Now, you've got the feel of this amazing book.

Even better, it nicely ties in as a prequel to From the Grave of the Gods. You don't need to have read it, nor read it in the future - the book is entirely stand-alone. But it explains some early moments from the other book very well and is a fun and exciting read in itself.

    Highly recommended.

The Re-Emergence is my first introduction to the writing of Alan K Dell, and it impressed me so much that I immediately bought the rest of the series.
It has been a while since I dipped my toe into the science fiction genre, even though it is one that I have enjoyed since I was a teen , but this was the perfect way to ease myself back into it. Though only novella length the book packs in plenty of action to keep the reader hooked as they explore space with a crew of bird like aliens and a sentient AI. It is a real testament to the skill of the author and the world he has created that I was able to jump into the book without needing to pause to figure out what was going on , the story flowed very naturally and the worldbuilding was incorporated pretty seamlessly, though there is also a handy glossary at the end of the book for reference. Speaking of the end of the book, it was spectacular and unexpected and left me needing to see where the author was going next, so I am glad that I have the next book on hand to carry on the adventure.

The Re-Emergence was another great novella in this series. It was really interesting to get more of the backstory of the events that precipitated those in From the Grave of the Gods. It was also interesting to learn more about the alien races involved. Also the space battles and the boarding party fight scenes were top notch.

A very compelling Novella from Alan K Dell. Sets the scene beautifully for his upcoming Saga and will definitely be picking up book one “From the Grave of the Gods” when released.

Being taken along the journey of the crew of the Qesh’kal across the Galaxy into mystery and peril was enough for me to consume the entire Novella in one sitting, and that says a lot for me personally.

Anyone who enjoys sci-fi novels should pick this up and give it a read. Excellent start for a first self published piece of work.
