About the author

Hello!
I am a writer and audiobook narrator living in the East Midlands in the UK.
I’ve had the amazing opportunity in 2021 to be funded by Arts Council England and Santander Universities grant schemes to develop my creative practice and progress my freelance work. This has allowed me to write and publish my novel which combines storytelling with a twist of personal development.
As part of the project I learnt how to narrate my own audiobook, which is now available on Audible.
I’m looking forward to releasing the next book in the series on 1st November where Josie Jackson returns in The Cottage on the Hill.
“It’s never too late to give it a go.”
E.L.Barry

- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2021I loved this book. Well written and the author kept me on the edge of my seat. The plot twists were imaginative and completely caught me off guard. I definitely recommend this.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2021This is the first book I’ve read with these characters. I enjoyed it and will try to find other books in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2021Love this book, I hope there are more to Josies story. I would definitely recommend it. Love the suspense and mystery
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2021I thought the book was very boring. I kept at it because it is a short book. The ending seemed like the author just ran out of steam.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2021E.L. Barry's quote -- "It's never too late to give it a go!" -- is reason enough to applaud this writer (cuz I quite agree!) -- and her "go," The Flat on the 7th Floor, is an engaging, page-turning read that pulls you immediately into the somewhat chaotic life of our protagonist, Josie Jackson, whose job as an estate agent suddenly morphs into a running, rolling mystery of bizarre familial history, strange people, and even stranger happenstances.
We are quickly drawn in, wondering how and why she's being bombarded by such unexpected events, but Barry's skill at grabbing us by the hand and demanding we fly along with her leading lady keeps us on our toes, surprised and swept up in the unfolding mystery. You won't be able to put it down until you breathlessly learn the "who, what and why" of the dark and dangerous machinations that upend Josie's heretofore easy-going life.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2021I listened to the book on audible. I really enjoyed the narration. The flow and descriptions allowed for oneself to be absorbed in the story. Just as every good work fiction does.
It’s well written with interesting characters and fast paced plot. Looking forward to more.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2021Growing up, Josie was an only child. Her mother died when she was young, and her father continues to be distant and cold. After establishing herself in the business world, she moves into her mother’s old flat on the 7th floor. Josie’s life is about to take a turn when she discovers she is being followed, her friend is attacked, and her apartment is trashed. Further, she is not allowed to spend any time alone with her father. Someone is out to hurt her, and she must figure it out. The ending is not expected!
The author, E.L. Barry writes a suspense filled novel. The storyline is strong and has several plot twists. The characters are well developed, and the dialog is authentic moving the story forward. While the story is good and solidly written, it does seem a bit rushed at times. The plot twists are well done. Kim’s presence in the story is weakish, I would have liked her to be more involved.
The narrator, Emma Barry delivers a clear and strong performance. She speaks clearly and with the appropriate tone according to the situation and characters involved.
If you enjoy mysteries, this is a good book to hear as it has suspense, interesting characters, and an unexpected twist.
There were no issues with the quality or production of this audiobook, it was clear and well produced.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mystery after mystery in this first in series
There is mystery after mystery in this Josie Jackson novel, the first, I believe, of a series. Who is the mysterious stranger in the lift? Why is estate agent Josie’s new client, Michael, so aloof? Why won’t her father talk to her direct?
Josie has a rather privileged life living rent-free in the flat her late mother left for her (although despite her good fortune – regarding the flat, not losing her mother - she seems terrible with money). She has a good job, friendly work colleagues, Kim and Gareth, and doesn’t lack for male attention. Nicholas is his name, but even her relationship with him is full of questions.
Things really start to kick off when Josie, Kim and Gareth go to a conference and someone in the hotel is attacked.
There are some nice messages in this book about improving yourself and how you live and work and I found the details of the Money Characters at the back very interesting. There’s also a Q&A with Josie Jackson which leads well into the next book.
This is a novel for young adults (YA) which I’m not but I enjoyed the story and will be keen to see what’s next for Josie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy Reading Pleasure
This is a fun, fast-paced, entertaining book and one I thoroughly enjoyed. The characters are well drawn and easy to distinguish, the plot is developed and coherent and it is set in a world I understood and recognised thanks to the author's skill in drawing a bright, colourful picture. .
Deliberately "Anytown", you can imagine these characters sitting at the next table in the coffee shop you use, or in the restaurant you frequent, which is something I personally enjoy. In fact, the characters and settings are the best part of the book. Josie Jackson is loveable and immediately endearing and I particularly enjoyed working out the motives of the mysterious Nicholas and I am sure other readers will too. Thoroughly recommended for fans of easy reading and engaging characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I really enjoyed this book the ending not so much, was there even an ending. I didn’t feel there was which was a shame as it feels the ending was rushed
