This collection of ghost stories sends chills up the spine with fun and original descriptions of the undead. At the same time, there are many moments of heart that work perfectly alongside the horror, rather than dulling it. A great read, totally worth it for anyone who loves ghost tales.

    That was really enjoyable.

    One word though; Changeling.
I feel as a parent I am really paranoid of changelings. Is it logical? no, not exactly but, it's still oddly terrifying.

This book has something for everyone, family house, water front property, nice little shack in the sand, creepy wells, creepy kids, love, and some great writing tying it all together.

So the other night I drank a little too much beer, and clicked the Buy It Now button on the wrong book... happy I did!
In the morning when I realized my mistake, I figured I’d just read it since I bought it, and really didn’t put it down. First off, EXCELLENT editing. No glaring typos, no sentence structure issues, at least none that my non-English major self saw.
The stories, well, they are excellent. Well written, and they drag you in. I really like how the first three revolve around the same well and the same family curse, all from different perspectives. And also the last story, very unexpected and sad.
All in all, it’s worth the money to buy it, I am buying the other short story collection now!

I love ghost stories, so this collection was perfect for me. Most of them followed this one house and family, which was by far what made this book so awesome as I also enjoy dramatic, multi-generational tales. The first story was creepy as hell and hooked me in. As the mystery of the house unfolded, I became engrossed. I don't want to give away spoilers, but I will say the eventual reveal was not what I expected.

If you love ghosts & hauntings, this is a must read. I will definitely be looking to read more from this author:)

I've read quite a few of Elford Alley's stories, on a different plantform. This collection is my favorite because of Hope. Hope hits a nerve not many can hit, I've been reading and watching horror since I was a kid. Maybe it was because I was already creeped out by the other stories.
The first three stories tie together in an excellent way, I don't want to give a lot away. So let's just say that it teaches the lesson not all family traditions should be passed on.
Along with the skill Alley has of painting a board, vivid picture using well structured sentences and paragraph. I couldn't stop reading until I reached the end.

In turns horrifying and heart wrenching. Read with caution if you're easily triggered by harm to children. Terrific storytelling, just a few proofreading issues that I only mention because some people care about that sort of thing. (I don't.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Chilling Tales

A great collection of ghostly tales. A number are cleverly linked as they take you from a house and then down through the generations as they move away and face new - but related hauntings. Others are set in the desert, by a hospital bedside and by a lake - each bringing with it a judgement or closure. The story of Hope, in particular, follows a narrative thread through a number of linked viewpoints and is one I could easily see working fleshed out as a novella. This is the first time I have read Elford Alley's work and I will definitely read him again.

This book creeps up on you. Unnerving and chilling would be better words than scary for how this made me feel. Hope was my favourite of the stories. A lot of the book seems to have a focus of pregnancy, children and family. In some ways the book is almost comfortable but like an armchair made of asbestos.
