The Not So Secret Emails Of Coco Pinchard: The hilarious, feel-good, romantic comedy (Coco Pinchard Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 4,202 ratings

The hilarious, feel-good, romantic comedy debut novel from No. 1 bestselling author Robert Bryndza.

'Crime thrillers and romantic comedy, both--who knew?! Had me belly laughing just as hard as I bite my nails when I read his suspense novels. Bryndza is a multi-talented writer!' ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Goodreads reviewer

Coco Pinchard has just turned forty, and is feeling fabulous. Her long-held dream to be a writer has been realised, with the publication of her debut novel, her son, Rosencrantz, is attending a prestigious London drama school, and her musician husband, Daniel, seems more in love with her than ever. Coco feels poised to enter an exciting new chapter in life.

When the New Year dawns after a hideous Christmas spent with her awful in-laws, Coco catches Daniel in bed with a younger woman, her novel flops, and Rosencrantz goes spectacularly off the rails.

As her once-happy life unravels, and any chance of an exciting new chapter recedes into the distance, Coco's new iPhone becomes her confessional.

Through emails to loyal friends Christopher, a neurotic middle-aged socialite, and Marika, a slightly alcoholic schoolteacher, Coco begins to document her seemingly endless (and often hilarious) run of bad luck.

When Coco reaches the top of the local allotment list (after putting her name down nineteen years previously) she meets the drop-dead gorgeous Adam, and she's back in the world of dating as a single forty-something. Read the emails that tell the hilarious, feel-good tale of Coco picking up the pieces!

Fans of Beth O'Leary and Sophie Kinsella will be glued to the pages of this totally addictive page-turner.

Review

"This was by far one of the funniest books I've read in the past year. Very 'Bridget Jones' but less stuffy and more 'Sex and the City' meets crazy family." -- Heather (Amazon reader)"I couldn't put it down. I literally laughed out loud several times... who wouldn't want to read through a stranger's correspondence? Fabulous book." --Noel (Amazon reader)"So refreshing not to have a cliche rom-com where you know exactly how everything is going to pan out! If you want a great British comedy give this a read!" -- Miss LL Colmer (Amazon reader)

Robert was born in Lowestoft, on the east coast of England. He studied at Aberystwyth University, and the Guildford School of Acting, and was an actor for several years, but didn’t find success until he took a play he’d written to the Edinburgh Festival. This led to the decision to change career and start writing. He self-published a bestselling series of romantic comedy novels, before switching to writing crime. Robert lives with his husband in Slovakia, and is lucky enough to write full-time.

I do not even know where to start because I do not want to post too many spoilers. I have so many pieces of the book rolling through my head and I am laughing just thinking about them!

Coco Pinchard is a hilarious character that anyone can relate too. She is still fairly young at 40-something, an author, and has a grown son who is gay. She lives in London and the story is full of British humor. The story starts out as a series of emails from Coco to her various family members and friends. It is Christmas time and Coco spouts off what she got for Christmas, from a bunch of Marlboro Lights, to the iPhone that her husband, Daniel, gave her. The most hilarious part is that Coco was not expecting an impersonal iPhone from her husband, she was fully expecting a present from Tiffany's. The iPhone becomes Coco's most prized possession, as she uses it to email her friends that are far away, as well as just to tell her son something while he is upstairs.

Daniel tells Coco that he is going out of town to be the new director of a musical. This starts off a series of events that culminate with Coco finding out that Daniel is cheating on her, with no other than Snow White! (lol, you will have to read it now just to find out what I am talking about!)

Coco and Daniel separate and ultimately divorce, but not without a million mishaps along the way that Coco manages to get herself into. Newly separated, Coco does not know what to do with herself. She manages to outcast herself in the publishing world with her book, Chasing Diana Spencer, because of a rivalry with the bestselling author of the time. Because of that all of her books are taken off the shelves and Coco goes on an adventure to see all her books burned.

Then there is her mother-in-law, Ethel, who is a crotchety old broad, who ends up living with her. Ethel is hilarious and horrible, in a well-meaning way. You can tell she loves Coco but she puts her through Holy Hell.
Then comes Coco's chance to prove herself once again, by making a musical out of her book. With the help of all her friends, a few romances that will have you rolling in the floor, a couple of holidays, a visit to a jail in California, and a garden plot, Coco Pinchard will have you rolling on the floor and laughing so hard that you snort tea up your nose. (lol, I really did!).

The entire book is in email format and it really works. It flows so smoothly and the pages turn so fast because you just cannot put the book down. The emails are only one way but the story is told flawlessly from Coco's point of view. The characters are fantastic from Coco's best friends, Chris and Marika, to her various in-laws, to the hunky Adam that helps Coco find her way.

I give this book 5 stars and I would give it more if I could.

This is one book you do not want to miss if you enjoy British humor and chick-lit. I am looking forward to reading many more books from Robert Bryndza and I hope you check this one out!

    Quotes from the book:

"E's nineteen years old! It's not trees e's gonna be going up."

"I heard your bed going like the clappers. For my own peace of mind I am going to assume you, and whoever, were jumping up and down on it to the music you were playing."

"He's letting her eat his corn on the cob."

I also have to mention some words and phrases that I thought were so funny.
Prat, up the duff, bollards, pipped me to the post (there are just so many that are so funny!)

I misread the blurb and thought it was about an iPhone being the culprit to the finding out about the affair. Thinking that, I jumped at the invitation by the author's partner to read it. See, a friend is currently going through a marriage mess and she says that the iPhone played a big part in said mess. I was curious what this book had to say and perhaps get some insights for my friend. Well, it was totally different from what I thought so it didn't relate to her situation afterall. Oops!

This book was HILARIOUS!! A British humor that continuously tickled my funny bone. I suspect I would be laughing even more if I understood some of the British terms/culture but, even so, I got the gist and I was rollin'!! So if you need a laugh, then here's your next book to read. Quirky-captivating characters, good writing, lighthearted but tender storyline, and downright side-splitting. A very entertaining read. Thanks Mr. Bryndza!

This would be fun to see in film.

This is a very charming book with a very likable and funny main character. I was surprised this first person female POV was written by a man but more power to ya, it worked and worked well. There were laugh-out-loud moments and overall it was a fun enjoyable read. It is light reading, nothing deep here, and tends towards romance though to be fair, I think that's the point. I'm just not a romance fan and didn't know this fell into that category before I read it. It also feels a little like a sitcom and gets a little farcical but it's too engaging to write off as silly. Coco, the main character and writer of the emails, is a good-hearted woman and I never stopped rooting for her.

There is one element of the story that got me wondering, though. A character is introduced into this cast of Brits and in the initial description, while going into some detail about the physique, the narrator never mentions the character is black. We find out pages later through dialogue but not from the narrator. I don't think this was intended as some plot twist to surprise the reader. I realize that when introduced to the other characters we weren't told they were white. And so I ask myself why the need to tell us (upon first introduction) when someone is black? Well, perhaps the writer doesn't come from my world where we notice these things. Or maybe since the setting was London I assume they're white unless told otherwise. If it had been set in Tokyo I'd assume the characters were Japanese. It's not an issue in the book, didn't detract from my enjoyment. I just brought it up as part of my experience of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gut geschriebene, unkomplizierte Lektüre, schön für Abende auf der Couch
Reviewed in Germany on November 22, 2016

I have to say I picked this up because it was cheap, but what a bargain! Just as good as any other romantic comedy I've read - if not better. Even though it's all written as emails, the characters are so real you quickly get hooked. Once I started to read I couldn't put it down and I was sorry when it ended. In fact I liked it so much I actually bought his other book as well and I'm looking forward to reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book on many (not so secret) levels
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 26, 2012
In short, a great book filled with laughs, brilliant characters, an engaging plot and a very clever use of emails as a writing style.

In more detail, it is clear after finishing it that I really cared about what happened to all the characters, in particular Coco - which is always a sign that you are reading a well put together book.

The plot moves along nicely through good and bad times, all punctuated with a bitter sweet humour as well as brilliant one-liners and physical gags that come alive in your mind's eye.

Through the use of emails as a writing medium it plays carefully into the sometimes complicated world of modern communication, privacy issues and Coco's relationship with her friends and family - which everyone can empathise with(!) - you tell some things to one person but not the other and sometimes miscommunication can open a can of worms!

Split between London, California, Slovakia and Edinburgh Coco's trials, tribulations and triumphs in both her personal and professional life has plenty of touch points for a wide range of readers to enjoy, sympathise with and chuckle along to - as well as read through their fingers at brilliantly socially-awkward (nigh on disastrous!) moments... which we've all been through in some way!

Where this book really works for me is that on so many occasions you can see it working brilliantly as a film or tv series thanks to the great social situations and believable characters (that I found myself wondering which actors would be asked to bring them to life on screen!) that the author has lovingly created and confidently worked out each and every relationship and how they all impact on one another.

As you can probably tell, I very much enjoyed the book and it's an essential read on your Kindle for this summer. Get downloading asap!
