The Other Side Of The Wall: A Gripping Psychological Thriller Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 4,641 ratings

When Sylvia looks out her bedroom window at night and sees a child face down in the pond next door, she races into her neighbour's garden. But the pond is empty, and no-one is answering the door.

Wondering if night feeds and sleep deprivation are getting to her, she hurriedly retreats. Besides, the fact that a local child has gone missing must be preying on her mind. Then, a week later, she hears the sound of a man crying through her bedroom wall.

The man living next door, Sam, has recently moved in. His wife and children are away for the summer and he joins them at weekends. Sylvia finds him friendly and helpful, yet she becomes increasingly uneasy about him.

Then Sylvia's little daughter wakes one night, screaming that there's a man in her room. This is followed by a series of bizarre disturbances in the house.

Sylvia's husband insists it's all in her mind, but she is certain it's not - there's something very wrong on the other side of the wall.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Domestic Noir with believable characters and a clever, corkscrew plot." - Sue Leonard in the Irish Examiner - Beginner s Pluck column

"The Other Side Of The Wall by Andrea Mara is a debut novel that will absolutely knock your socks off and leave you looking at your neighbours in a whole new light... Gripping, enthralling, and downright creepy, this novel has got it all. It s the epitome of what a psychological thriller novel should be, and will leave you asking the question, do you ever really know what happens behind closed doors?" - Books Of All Kinds

"As a reader it feels as though she is telling the story to you alone, whispered confidentially in a quiet corner of a coffee shop in leafy south Dublin. It did not feel like a tentative first book by an aspiring writer, instead it has the confidence and sure touch of an established author." - OftenCalledCathy

"A twisting tale of evil lurking behind a suburban hall door" - Sinead Crowley - Author of One Bad Turn

"This is a prime example of a superior grip lit book. From the first eerie chapter to the very last page it is quite literally unputdownable with an abundance of 'oh' moments throughout. The characters are well developed and the subplots all deal with everyday-life issues that everyone I know will relate to. Honestly, a very, very superior debut." - Margaret Scott, author of The Fallout

"Finished it in three sittings... Grips and twists to the very end. A very clever and accomplished book." - Emily Hourican, author of The Privileged

"Andrea Mara has written a remarkable debut novel that will make you reflect on what really goes on behind closed doors. The Other Side of The Wall is a well balanced novel that moves along at a very fast pace"

--Mairead Hearne reviewing on writing.ie and on her own blog Swirl and Thread

"I read this in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed it - the right side of chillingly good" - Woman's Way

"I absolutely loved it, the twists & turns were outstanding. I found myself thinking about the characters when the book wasn't in my hands, I needed to know more. It s a hard book to put down once you start and I love that!"- Nicola Naessens, SimplyHomemadeBlog

Andrea Mara managed to build suspense and create such a fast paced and intense mystery that if, by some miracle, my two smallies hadn t needed food, naps, nappy changes, toys from under the couch, I would easily read it in one sitting... Excellent debut novel by Andrea Mara a must read! - Michelle Teahan

The book took me a while to get me to the point where I felt like I had to keep going to see what happened.

I can see how the structure could be a little confusing. I had to move back to chapters to check the dates to see how they match up.

Overall it was worth getting through the first half for the 2nd

On the plus side, this was a good story and kept my interest. The author does a good job of building suspense and creating intrigue. However, she jumps around all over the place, in terms of both time and perspective. It becomes somewhat confusing at times. There is also some questionable actions on the part of the characters, in that they don’t seem very realistic. Sylvia, for example...has she ever heard of changing the locks? There are a couple of extraneous subplots that seem unnecessary. The ending seems abrupt, and it feels like there are still some loose ends. Overall an okay read.

This is an intriguing mystery, with several plot lines and timelines. Keeps the reader engaged. The villain is particularly despicable. Also I found the character of Sylvia's husband to be a condescending jerk. Whatever bizarre thing that happened, it was her "imagination" or something she "forgot". Overall a good read.

Wow, this is the best psychological thriller I've read in a long time. I absolutely could not put it down. There is so much going on with all the characters some known and some leave you trying to figure out who they are. Very well written. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the book to the very end. Awesome. It is a real page turner that will keep you guessing throughout the story. I love books like this. I didn't want it to end. It makes you wonder what might be going on right under your nose in your neighborhood. I can't say enough how much I loved this book. Please write another one soon!!!! The only thing negative I can say is I did not like the bad language. I don't think books need that to make the story better. It turns me off. Just my opinion.

The Other Side of the Wall is a captivating thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat with every suspense filled chapter, Sylvia thinks the new neighbor is strange after waking one night to what appears to be a body in his pond, her husband dismisses it as her not getting enough sleep and the story takes some twists and turns from there. This is a great book I couldn't put it down till the last page, I would recommend it to all reader of psychological thrillers.Andrea Mara has written an exceptional book.

The book turned out to be really great and surprising , the only issue is that it takes so long to figure out what is going on that the entire first half of the book feels like you are just reading about multiple normal people's everyday uninteresting life. I wanted to stop reading a few times because I was bored, but I'm glad I didnt.
