Purchase options and add-ons
#1 Bestseller and Business Book Awards winner, 2021
If you feel unfulfilled at work, you may be experiencing the purpose myth; the lie that the work you do for income must also fulfil your life’s purpose.
From award-winning strategist and social entrepreneur Charlotte Cramer, The Purpose Myth provides a powerful argument for, and practical steps towards, reclaiming your life’s purpose.
“A vision and roadmap for how you can start having a positive impact on the world.” —Alex Stephany, CEO, Beam
“A must-read for all purpose-seekers” —Rebecca Fraser-Thill, Senior Contributor, Forbes
“Reframe your expectations of work, and turbo-boost your purpose." —Caroline Pay, CCO, Headspace
This book is for you, if:
- You feel unfulfilled and stuck at work
- You want to learn why purpose is a core human need
- You want to ignite your entrepreneurial spirit
- You want to make a difference in the world and get unstuck
How have we got here? When researchers found that people will happily accept a pay cut if they believe that their job fulfils a greater purpose, HR departments began advertising jobs as opportunities for purpose-fulfilment. Frustratingly, the banalities of office life haven’t lived up to the promise.
This has left millions of workers—in almost every industry—utterly unfulfilled at work.
Charlotte Cramer shares a proven, step-by-step guide to finding and fulfilling purpose all in a few hours a week, without sacrificing your salary.
You will learn:
- Why work isn’t working
- How to find, reclaim, and fulfil your purpose
- What is design thinking and social innovation strategy how to use it
- What makes a newsworthy Purpose Project
- How DIY PR can get you top-tier press and TV news coverage
- How to become a side hustle social entrepreneur
- How to create a measurable social impact
- How to use this to transform your career and life
The advice is based on Cramer’s academic research in neuroscience and co-founding the award-winning Purpose Project, CRACK +CIDER, which has helped over 40,000 people experiencing homelessness; landed her interviews on BBC, ITV, and CBS news; resulted in speaking gigs to audiences of 2,000 people; and earned coverage in The Guardian, SF Chronicle, and Fast Company, among many others.
Packed with practical advice and worksheets with downloadable and printable versions, The Purpose Myth will give you newfound motivation to explore, identify, and fulfil purpose by changing the world, all in your spare time.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2021An inspiring and thoughtful book that was perfectly timed, for me at least, after a year of uncertainty and critical thinking about life and the future. Charlotte dove deep into her own career/personal projects to give a very realistic guide and set the reader up to feel more fulfilled outside of their 9-5. It would be too easy and cliche (and unrealistic!) to just write a “quit your day job” book, and instead of that, Charlotte gives in-depth, behaviorally driven timelines, tools and goals to successfully achieve a fulfilling side hustle. I enjoyed her personal stories, creative ideas, mentions of mistakes and lessons learned. A truly genuine book written by a truly genuine person. I recommend to anyone who wants to change the world but still needs to pay the rent. :)

- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2021As someone who has spent much time reflecting on how I can find meaningful purpose in my life, and the Purpose Myth opened my eyes to a new and unique perspective that purpose lives beyond my career. As I was reading this book it made me reflect on my life, the culture that I grew up in, and how my previous corporate jobs created a limiting belief on how we can live with purpose. If you're seeking a fresh new perspective on purpose, and how you can find motivation outside of your 9-5 job, this book is for you.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2021I’m only midway through but already feel compelled to leave a review! This book is, at the same time, a wake up call and a call to action. It gives you a jumping off point that doesn’t involve uprooting your whole existence but helps cultivate a richer life from your current seat. The quotes and studies Included are inspiring and timely...I’m hungry to learn more! Whether you love your job, hate your job, are indifferent, or don’t have a job - this is a must read for everyone.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2021I’ve read a few books on the topic that are usually packed with self help advice that is hard to put into practice and often left me wondering if there was something wrong with me. The purpose myth was the first book where I didn’t experience that. I credit that to the very clear examples, the personal development workbook, and the fact that the author just feels very relatable. I’m excited to put this into practice and find a sense of purpose at work!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2021I really wish I had read something like this earlier in my career that made me think how my work and purpose can exist independently from each other. This book offers practical advice on how to accomplish this in modern times with a step-by-step that anyone can benefit from to pursue their own purpose project. Highly recommend this book for anyone seeking more purpose in their everyday lives.

Demystifying the idea of purpose & a lot of the roadblocks to really just doing things you are about...So insightful, authentic and pragmatic. Unlike most of the books in this world, after reading it I genuinely feel like I have the tools to make my projects happen, and a newfound motivation to make bold moves. i’m so appreciative of the new perspective, thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare treasure chest
Consider Cramer’s ‘The Purpose Myth’ a rare treasure chest. You may very well fall somewhere on the vast spectrum of uninspired rat racer to fulfilled world-changer; regardless, Cramer offers astonishing insight into the current status of the human condition along with a truly actionable and tangible toolkit (consisting of little more than a pen and paper), helping any reader to take notice of the untapped potential in their life at the very least, and at best to facilitate the conception and ongoing management of an authentic and impactful Purpose Project. Littered with a beautiful curation of powerful quotes and references, Cramer’s is a book you’ll regularly put down- not out of boredom, but to allow yourself time and space for deep thought. Whilst erudite, the tonality is warm and surprising in its intimate and honest flavour; it leaves you with hope and optimism as well as a burning desire to tap into your passion and potential. A masterpiece debut.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting and insightful read
I fancied a non fiction read and picked this up not knowing what is was.
Whilst reading the book I have started re-writing my own novel that I put down many years ago for fear of failure. I have also decided to launch a trilingual YouTube channel aimed at teenagers learning two new languages at secondary school. So the book is definitely inspiring!
Set out well, grammar etc perfect. Really interesting facts. I really enjoyed reading and think anyone could learn something from this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The science, tools and mindset to ignite your true calling
Finally, a book that not only dives into the reasons, the psychology and the science of why we can feel shadowed on the daily by an unfulfillable cloud (and how somewhere along the way society has subconsciously convinced us that we’re supposed to find it in our day jobs…) - but actually puts words into action and gives us the tools we need to shift away from that mindset and discover our own true callings.
I love how Cramer calls *BULL* on what we’ve grown up to accept as our intention in life; and takes us on a journey of change and self-discovery to find the meaning we’ve all been searching for.
The Purpose Myth is for anyone that is fed up with feeling like their potential is being restricted by their 9-5, and how to do something worthwhile about it. And with that in mind, I’ll be recommending it to anyone and everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing read
I’m really enjoying reading The Purpose Myth at the moment, and like me...you won't want to put it down! Charlotte really takes you on her entrepreneurial journey from the beginning, starting her non-profit helping thousands of homeless people to how we can all find purpose in our lives - very inspiring and motivating. I love how she uses purpose and psychological research to change your life and the word, and really puts your life into perspective - would highly recommend to those wanting to make a change.
