Those Who Wait Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 6,200 ratings

Sutton Spencer’s ideas for her life were fairly simple: finish graduate school and fall in love. It would be a lot simpler if she could pinpoint exactly what she should do when she graduates in less than a year. Oh, and if she could figure out how to talk to a woman without feeling like a total mess, that would be great too.

Charlotte Thompson is very much the opposite. She's always had clear steps outlining her path to success with no time or inclination for romance. Her burgeoning career in politics means everything to her and she’s not willing to compromise it for something as insignificant as love. Fleeting, casual, and discreet worked perfectly fine.

When they meet through a dating app, it's immediately clear that they aren't suited for anything more than friendship. Right?

A sapphic must have!
My girlfriend gifted me Those Who Wait and On The Same Page by Haley Cass for Xmas, and I have to say, reading these books has made me fall in love with reading all over again….After reading both books in the span of a week, I am left wanting for more passionate and heartfelt romance that Haley’s style of writing brings to life. I’m beyond excited to read the rest of her work, and add all of Cass’ books to my sapphic collection!

Haley Cass has once again proven her mastery of storytelling with Those Who Wait. From the very first page, I was captivated by her remarkable character development. The depth and authenticity she brings to Sutton and Charlotte are nothing short of extraordinary. Each chapter felt like a personal journey with them, and I found myself deeply invested in their lives.

Haley has a unique ability to make her characters feel real and relatable. Sutton and Charlotte’s journey is filled with genuine emotions, challenges, and growth, which kept me turning the pages, eager to see what would happen next. The way their relationship evolves is beautifully paced, with every interaction leaving a lasting impact.

What truly sets Those Who Wait apart is how it balances heartwarming moments with realistic struggles, making it a story that resonates on many levels. Haley Cass' writing style is engaging, and she effortlessly draws readers into the world she has created. It’s clear that a lot of thought and care went into every aspect of this book.

I can’t recommend Those Who Wait enough. It’s a poignant, hawt, beautifully written story that stays with you long after the final page. Haley Cass has crafted a masterpiece that will undoubtedly leave readers, like myself, eagerly awaiting her next work. Luckily, Haley has a Patreon where she undoubtedly spoils her readers with content consistently throughout the month. The community is lively, fun, warm, and inviting. If you can't get enough of Haley (which my wife and I can't), you can find her there.

    Oh…my…word. 🤯

For a book that has so much texting, internal thoughts and rapid dialogue, very well done. Very well written.

Here we go, my #1 priority: grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. First of all, the grammar. This book had so many text messages in them, but they were written so well. I am THRILLED the author did no use acronyms or any shortened abbreviations with letters and numbers. We have had full keyboards on our phones for a decade now, please take advantage. The structure was easy to read given that both characters are constantly in their owns heads while carrying on conversations between each other or other people. And Sutton can speak so fast and incomplete that it takes conscious effort to make sure you are using the right punctuation to convey the right staccato type iambic pentameter to really grasp how nervous she always is. Not going to lie, she kinda drives me nuts a little, but it’s cute. Can’t not love her for that.
Because I have no self control on waiting to read a good book THAT WAS A PERFECT RECOMMENDATION for me, but adulting gets in the way, I actually did a hybrid read of this book and did both the audio and reading portion. So I have to say that it was written so well and the audio portion read by Lori Prince mirrored the correct punctuation to really bring the story to life.

Despite Sutton, being a character I don’t completely relate to. I really enjoyed this story and the dynamic between Charlotte and Sutton. They were so well crafted in their characters, the perfect opposites that fit together. I really appreciated the given length of this book that the author put in to really full circle develop both women. So much of what they faced came from issues from their past, but this wasn’t an overdone “flashback” book. Most of the reminiscing was short and succinct enough to equate what any one of us do as normal “day dreaming”. That going back to go forward really then shows the comparison and contrast of how much evolution the characters go through individually and together through the story.

And as a reader, you feel like you develop and evolve through the story, that you can’t help but get so attached to not just main characters but their supporting ones. I’m a huge family oriented person. So the fact that both of their families are so heavily involved in their story made it so easy to relate to. The mention of their family supporting characters gave enough support to also again give you such a clear picture of who Charlotte and Sutton are and who they become. Again it makes it relatable to a reader when they can acknowledge the supporting people in their lives. Especially because this is largely about acceptance both personally and publicly about their sexuality.

And I love that both women are ridiculously smart and intelligent. But they are still graceful about it. I loved that the built their relationship slowly, even if they were always initially attracted to each other. I think that’s what we all look for in someone, the most intimate best friend you can have. And this book really put into perspective how to be patient with yourself. Love yourself while you stumble and traverse through the hiccups in life. It doesn’t happen overnight. Don’t rush anything. Don’t settle. And for the record neither woman sat around just waiting…so don’t miss the key thing. While you wait evolve and grow, because the goodness that comes from waiting is not just about the other person, it’s about yourself.

With all of the hype in sapphic circles, I was excited to dig into Haley Cass. Then I got 25% of the way into the book, saw the burgeoning relationship in the pages, and found dread for what the next 75% held. I thought maybe it would drag out, or some miscommunication or another would stifle the romance. Thankfully, I was wrong. The pacing was pretty good.

The leads in the story are rich and three-dimensional, and their feelings are believable. I'm so glad I finished it.

All of that said, this book really could use a second edition. There are glaringly broken sentences of the sort that come from an under-edited revision. I'm all for the florid language of romance, but this is stuff that should have been caught in the ARC.

Cass is a talented plotter and clearly understands sapphic desire. I look forward to reading more.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best sapphic romance I've read
Reviewed in Germany on April 22, 2024
I cannot even begin to describe the magic of this book. The plot by itself is great, from the funny start to the friends-with-benefits trope to amazing spice scenes to the mostly relatable drama in the third act and the resolution, you get everything you are looking for in a brilliant romance.

But where Haley Cass really shines is her exceptional character work, and I cannot stress the word exceptional enough. I have yet to read anything, in any genre, that compares to the way Haley makes her characters come alive. They don't just feel like the likeable protagonists of a story, but like real people, like friends, where at some point, you already know what they are going to say or think and just want to give them a hug or sit down with them for a chat and that's just... extraordinary.
Also, this whole thing is just too sweet. When Sutton eventually begins monologuing about "my Charlotte" at some point in the story, I just lost it.
I've read a good number of sapphic romances by now, but nothing ever blew me away like this.

I’m not usually one for slow burns, but this story had me from the very first chapter. Both Charlotte and Sutton are such complex characters and an absolute joy to read. I got butterflies in my stomach, I was devastated when they were and fell in love with both of them as they fell for each other.

    What a beautiful tale!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sutton & Charlotte
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 20, 2024
An epic read at over 600 pages long, a sort of Sapphic Romantic Fiction version of ‘war & peace’, not in its content but in its length. Stick with it though, as it’s a wonderfully written tale featuring two very attractive MCs in Sutton and Charlotte, and an interesting storyline set in the ruthless world of political ambition. I don’t want to write a ‘war & peace’ length review but I do want to commend the author particularly for the scene where Sutton experiences her first time with a woman, as it’s the most well written and realistic depiction that I’ve ever read, capturing perfectly the apprehension and joy associated with such an
experience. The relationship that develops between Sutton and Charlotte follows a familiar generic path, from friends to friends with benefits to developing ‘real feelings’ and of course includes the inevitable 3rd act breakup, but never in a cliched way. I felt the storyline and romantic arc were totally believable, and although there were some incidents of ‘misunderstanding’, overall I never felt it jarred as much as lots of storylines in the genre do.
So, in conclusion, I would definitely recommend this book, it’s a long read but a very enjoyable one.
