If there’s one thing we know for certain about Colin Crampton. Crime reporter for the Brighton Evening Chronicle, is that no matter where he shows up, a dead body is sure to follow.

Crampton is in the classic English village of Steyning, substituting as a speaker for his editor, Frank Figgis. He’s brought his girlfriend, Shirley Goldsmith, along. After the speech, they’re headed out of the village and on the way to a country pub for supper, when Shirley spots a mangled bicycle on the roadside. It doesn’t take long for Shirley to find a body, some distance away. It’s an 18-year-old student at a local school, and by the looks of things, he’s the victim of a hit-and-run accident that may not have been an accident.

Crampton, desperate for a good crime story, gets the reluctant approval from his editor to investigate (payback for the speech). And he learns that no one really liked the dead student, including his teachers, fellow students, and the school staff. It appears that the victim may have been a blackmailer, and someone got tired of it. Or he picked the wrong person to blackmail. Or both.

And then Shirley’s mother disappears just as she arrives in England from Australia for Mother’s Day. And Shirley expects Crampton to do something about it. As it turns out, everything is connected to everything else.

“The Mother’s Day Mystery” is another in the Colin Crampton of the Chronicle (note the alliteration) mystery series by Peter Bartram, and the second in Crampton’s Deadline Murder Series (the first was “The Tango School Mystery”). And it continues in the vein set by its predecessors – a good story, an irreverent journalist (sorry for the redundancy), crime abounding, and the hero having to find a killer in spite of the police.

Bartram has had a long career in journalism, including being a reporter on a weekly newspaper, an editor for newspapers and magazines in London, and freelance journalism – all of which have been utilized in creating the character of Colin Crampton. Bartram is also a member of the Society of Authors and the Crime Writers’ Association.

Fast-paced, breezy, funny, and action-packed, “The Mother’s Day Mystery”is another solid entry in the Crampton of the Chronicle series.

I really like Colin Crampton, and his adventures are always quite interesting. However, I do not like Shirley at all, and that is the reason for only 4 stars. Sadly, I think I am going to pass on the other books because of her - she is just so crude. However, the stories are worth reading, and I really enjoy everything else.

THE MOTHER’S DAY MYSTERY is incredibly good. I LOVE Colin Crampton, his girl, Shirley, and all their shenanigans. Colin’s observation and logic skills are awesome and are the perfect setup for intelligent but risky adventures in crime solving. Fun, complex, fascinating mystery read! Bravo, Mr. Peter Bartram!

Peter ("Master of Metaphors") Bartram knocks another one out of the park. Good story action, with expected humor makes this a fun read. But for me ... the best part was the ending (no, I won't spoil it). Suffice it to say that Colin Crampton winds up the mystery in a way that would make Agatha Christy's Hercule Pirot proud.

I enjoyed this book very much. It fairly dripped with suspense. A schoolboy struck down while riding his bicycle by a hit and run driver. The characters were well written and the conversations believable. I recommend this book to all mystery lovers.

I am loving this series. Such great characters keep the story moving. I love the way he figures out the clues to figure out whodunnit. The relationships are great between the characters and add so much to the story.

I've become a big fan of the Crampton Chronicles. There's a tongue in cheek style with great characters and a well rounded setting in the 1960's of Southern England. This is so well done you could see this being made into a television series.

Colin certainly gets himself into some scrapes, and The Mother's Day Mystery is no different. This time Colin and Shirley find the body of a schoolboy on a lonely road near a posh Grammar school. The local D.I. considers it to be a hit and run. Colin obviously thinks differently and there begins another exciting adventure. A Lord and lady of the manor, bell ringers, drug smugglers, hippy types floating around in a daze of floaty frocks and high on LSD, and a chemistry master at said posh Grammar school, all go to make another excellent read from Mr Bartram's pen. Oh, and Shirley's female wrestling mum from Adelaide turns up, but not in the way she expected.
The usual suspects appear. Colin's landlady 'the widow', Wilson his go to police friend, Jeff the landlord of Prinny's Pleasure, and of course Figgis, Colin's boss.
I've always said that if Colin wasn't a journo, he'd make a really good copper. These books are a delight to read. Colin has a wonderful array of one liners which always raise a titter.
Roll on the next one Mr Bartram please.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Mother's Day Mystery: A Crampton of the Chronicle adventure.

Colin Crampton and his girlfriend discover a corpse and a damaged bicycle and then a dead body. Convinced that this is no hit-and-run, the hero investigates and finally digs out the truth, with more than a few misadventures along the way. Set in and around Brighton in 1965, there is a convincing Sixties atmosphere, particularly in the journalist/hero's workplace - typewriters and cigarette smoke. Every Colin Crampton book is worth reading with clever plotting and the occasional odd character. Can't wait for the next book...

The Mother's Day Mystery is another fun-filled thriller set in 1960s Brighton from the pen of Peter Bartram. As with all of the other Colin Crampton novels this book is witty, well written and has a great sense of the period. As a child in 1960s Brighton I am reminded of places I remember and of places I had forgotten. If you have not met Colin, Shirley and the other colourful regular characters yet don't delay. I am sure you won't be disappointed
