- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2017I read this book through Kindle Unlimited (I think). It has some editing glitches at points but ignore them - they are so minor, and if you love intelligent spy novels this is one you must read. It's a really compelling story about a spy's search for documents which will reveal some kind of WMD in Iraq, with all the implications that would bring, many years after Desert Storm. And in most espionage novels that's all you would get - an assured, fairly gripping story of the race-against-time nature. But this is so much more than that.Kate Morden is a great character - there's another review on here at the moment that complains that Kate is an angry character. I didn't see her like that. I thought she was very convincing as the kind of person who would be both driven and emotionally detached enough to become a freelance spy - a woman with nothing and no one but her job. A woman who is constantly used, one way or another, by one group or person or another, because that's what people in this world do. And maybe that's what people do full stop. We all use each other to fulfil roles for us. Like the other two characters, Juliette and Sanaa. What a beautiful and unusual depiction of female friendship.
I'm not going to go on and on because I don't want to leave spoilers. But this is the story of three women. It's the story of what love is - real love, the kind of love that is at the very core of what it is to be human. The kind of love that will sacrifice itself to protect another, to keep another's secrets. And it is the story of war made real. Not smart bombs on the TV or some chilling grimnoir depiction, but a tremendous portrayal of people living in fear. Or grieving lives that could have been. And, ultimately, of how we overcome all of that by extending a hand and saying: We come from different worlds but we both bleed, both grieve, both love.
This is one of the best books I've read through the KU programme. It would make a compelling film - The Hours meets Zero Dark Thrity. If you like thrillers, do yourselves a favour and read it. You won't put it down.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2018Interesting treatment of an espionage type thriller cum international relations treatise. Starts out without much evident sense of direction and too much introspection by the main character, but gradually adds context and suspense while eventually revealing the direction the story is headed. Not really an action thriller; more of a mystery but complex and thought provoking if you take time to ponder the complexities of the modern reality. If you are looking for mindless entertainment and quick engagement this isn't the book for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2017This was a riveting, thoughtful, well plotted tale that crisscrosses the globe as well as the decades. Three women, from three very different backgrounds, get caught up in the consequences of war and more specifically 'weapons of mass destruction.' One of them, Kate Morden, a spy (and the daughter of a coder), knows she holds the key to unlocking the code to these weapons. But the horror of what these weapons are is the greatest twist of all. Could not put this one down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Story Telling
I have to say that I would not normally read spy thrillers but as I follow the author of The Truth Keepers, Jacqueline Ward I made an exception. I am glad I did. The story grabbed me from page one and kept me reading late into the night. I like how Jacqueline drew me into the story. The characters were believable and I liked the element of women in war zones and how the men in their lives betrayed them. Kate Morden's journey to break the code and keep the truth under wraps, is exciting and enthralling.I would recommend this book to everyone who likes fantastic story telling.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book; sometimes I felt a little confused and frustrated as there’s so much to grasp and understand though it’s an excellent and exciting story. Thank you Jacqueline

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern subject matter delivered in a new way.
A modern subject matter delivered in a new way through strong lead female characters. These strong female leads continue to come from this author, already a fan of DS Jan Pearce I now look forward to reading more about Kate Mordens life & Career.
