A secret bunker. A sinister darkness. Can Dan Tracy put the pieces together before the whole world is lost?
On a family trip to a disused Cold War bunker, Dan Tracy's family gets caught up in life threatening events which have cast a sudden and terrible darkness over the surface of the planet.
All known life has been put to sleep, causing havoc throughout the world as planes drop from the skies, vehicles career off the road and governments seem powerless to intervene.
24 hours after the darkness descends, the bunker undergoes a massive transformation and it emerges that the dusty old tunnels form a state-of-the-art operations centre that has been hiding in open view for many decades - but its present-day purpose is unclear.
Dan soon realises that he and his family are part of something bigger than they could ever have imagined and the world is in perilous danger from a malevolent organisation based on earth and intent on destroying the planet.

About the author

Hi, I'm Paul Teague, the author of The Secret Bunker Trilogy, The Grid Trilogy and the standalone novel, Phase 6.
I'm a former broadcaster and journalist with the BBC, but I have also worked as a primary school teacher, a disc jockey, a shopkeeper, a waiter and a sales rep.
If you love stories like The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, Divergent, Running Man and The Giver then you’ll enjoy my sci-fi and dystopian stories.
The Secret Bunker Trilogy was inspired by a family visit to a remarkable, real-life secret bunker at Troywood, Fife, known as ‘Scotland’s Secret Bunker’.
It paints a picture of a planet in crisis and is a fast-paced story with lots of twists and turns, all told through the voice of Dan Tracy who stumbles into an amazing and hazardous adventure.
The Grid Trilogy takes place in a future world where everything has gone to ruin.
Joe Parsons must fight for survival in the gamified Grid, from which no person has ever escaped with their life.
The standalone novel Phase 6 bridges the worlds of The Secret Bunker and The Grid, revealing what happens between Regeneration and Fall of Justice.
It depicts the world as we know it falling under a dark and sinister force - things will never be the same again.
I love dystopian fiction so writing these books has been a great opportunity to finally come up with my own vision of a future world where things are going haywire.

A family wins a trip to a secret bunker in the middle of nowhere in Scotland. While there on a seemingly routine trip, things begin to happen and the bunker is locked down. Dan Tracy is locked in when the bunker is put in lock down and is eventually found. But everything inside the bunker has changed and for some reason, he has full access to the entire secret building that he didn't even know existed.
The narration for Darkness Falls was done by Dan McGowan who does a really good job. The novel was choppy and written into really small sections and McGowan's style and poise were the only things that kept me coming back for more.
I almost stopped reading/listening in the first 20 minutes or so. The book. is. so. choppy. Especially on audiobook. I'm 100% okay with short chapters especially when I'm trying to read a book. But this had normal length chapters with really choppy random changes of direction.
The book jumps around a lot, which leads to some really hard reading/listening on my part. And the book just sort of ends. If you've been a follower of my blog for any time you know that I don't mind trilogies but I hate when a book just ends. Especially when I feel like the arc of the story hasn't even begun to be completed. Darkness Falls is another in the "trilogy mindset" that falls a little short to me.
Now, I did actually like the premise of the story, and I definitely want to continue it. I just feel like there are some things that need to be closed up for me to feel like I've read a full book instead of a piece of episodic fiction.
Overall, Darkness falls is able to overcome some of its shortfalls and is a pretty enjoyable read. Just be warned that listening to this on audiobook is rough but not because of the narrator, just the way it was written.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt was supposed to be a fun little holiday that Dan’s father had won, a tour of an old war bunker in Scotland. However, things turn desperate when the sirens start up and the bunker doors begin to close. Dan sees his father pull his brother and sister deeper into the bunker, while he also sees his mother getting trapped outside as the doors close. Then, the lights go out. Something Dan sees brings up the memory of losing his twin who was hit by a car three years ago, but are the facts of that day in the past truly correct? Meanwhile, the emergency that triggered the alarms and closing of the doors was a strange darkness that suddenly began to envelop the globe. What is the cause of this strange event? This is the first book of a trilogy, so it is important to capture the reader’s attention in this opening book in order to draw the reader into delving into the subsequent books. Yet, the way the author has chosen to present this complex story is like one of his sub-chapter titles, “Jigsaw.” Sub-chapters shift from Dan’s first person narration of the story of what he sees and uncovers from the time of the bunker doors closing to third person perspectives from unknown characters at different times from thirty years previous to the current action with no obvious segues between these moments. Jigsaw pieces of the story appear to be randomly tossed out for the reader to hold and slowly put together. This requires a lot of patience for the reader, but if one is willing to hang in and keep track of the timeline as the pieces come together, then a complex sci-fi mystery thriller begins to form, incorporating a secret global conspiracy for both good and evil, global warming concerns, secret mind-control methods, grand cybernetic hacking, and genetic engineering plots that gradually reveal a set of heroes against secret villains that will be revealed in the subsequent novels. The concepts unveiled are imaginative; however, they turn out to be highly hyped-up and a bit unrealistic in range within a story set in present day Earth. If rabid sci-fi fantasy fans are prepared, this tale and its partners in the trilogy could be a very satisfactory read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI absolutely loved this book. It was confusing at the start, the way the story skipped around, but I soon saw the need for that. A story, a back-story, and a future story all in one, all narrated from the viewpoint of the main character, Dan, a 16 year old boy. Some thought provoking thoughts: "...dead people leave a space, ... and the smallest thing can can let the air rush into that vacuum...filling it ... as if that person had never been gone," and "It's not real (well not yet." The book hinted at the world's possibility of collapsing...just not in the way, you would associate that word with. I got up at 5 a.m. this morning to read it, after falling asleep trying to finish it last night. When I got on here to look for the book, I found that it was not on KU and it was not included in his omnibus of 12 books that are on KU. I guess I will never know what happens.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI've read and enjoyed Paul Teague's Grid books so I was interested in where he'd go with this different series. As a first in a series it does introduce more secrets and questions than it answers as it's not intended as a stand alone read. The main narrative is through Dan, a 16 yr old twin, but there are quite a few shifts to other perspectives as the intrigue is developed. This author's style includes touches of narrative intrusion which is not my personal preference. I liked the story concept, the mystery, and suspense as we discover alongside Dan, how his family has been involved for years in top secret events. This first book sets the stage for this futuristic scifi dystopian novel and I'm interested in what the next in the series will reveal. WJ Scott, Children's Author, Hieroglyph.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNothing gets done till you finish it! Nicely done, but it draws you in and you have no choice but to move on to the next book. Sometimes, a cliff hanger tends to aggravate, but the ending is appropriate and you know going in it's a trilogy, so no hard feelings!

3.0 out of 5 stars Environmental nightmare
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAt first i was distracted by the theme. I was expecting something else. But it didn't take long to perceived the real
deal. I've enjoyed reading this book a lot. This is one of those books that reads as if we've just watched an action movie.
Thanks for a good reading. Next one, please!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhile it was a good story well written and quite original in itself the cost of the follow up volumes was such that I feel that I did not get into the story enough to purchase them. As with many of these multi volume stories it can get quite expensive to buy them all

5.0 out of 5 stars Be surprised
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseInteresting story, certainly not your "normal" EOTWAWKI book. It is refreshing, I honestly read the start (book 1 was free!) and before I knew it Dan the man had me hooked. I had/have no idea were this story is going to end up. What you have to get used to is a different style of writing. There are overlapping plot lines, you step back, you then step forward, if you want a gore fest well this is not it in fact I believe only a handful of bullets are fired in book one (and no one is killed).
Basically this is not a normal family - it is quite an extraordinary one in a creepy cold war bunker. They won the equivilent of a Wonka Gold token holiday to a disused Cold War bunker in Scotland now used as a tourist attraction. The place is as bizarre as the Chocolate factory. But alas all are predestined to be there in that place at that time. But of course all is not as it seems and as the story unfolds the terrible truth is revealed all through the eyes of a wonderful 16 year old who has a disarming charm. Some of the characters have all the charm of rusty gas pipe but that is intentional. Download and surprise yourself.

1.0 out of 5 stars several hours of my life that I'll never get back
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI hope this author learns from this book and goes on to great things. From my point of view it was a waste of time and money to read the first instalment only to have it just end...just like that. There should have been at least a paragraph saying please pay the man for the rest of the sentence!
I am getting sick and tired of authors writing a book, tearing it into 3 pieces and selling the pieces off to get more over all money. Then filling the individuall booklets with enough 'padding' to fill them out enough to qualify, just, as a small book.
And this story started off with a premise that sounded very interesting, which is why I bought it. Buy the end of the first chapter I was no wiser as to what was happening....anywhere....to anyone....on the planet! And then it got confusing. The story started to show hints of what was going on by the end of the book...and then it stopped. There should have been a last paragraph asking the reader to please pay another $6.50 and we'll tell you what happens next. Oh, wait...that's exactly what they did! I am sick and tired of investing time and money in books that end up being mediocre at best, but I have to pay 3 times the amount I should just to find out they suck.
And this book has more filling between the lines to pad out a short story than my pillow. Authors who have a good idea should stick with it to the end, properly edit it and publish it on it's own merits. This one might have a great ending but I will never know because I refuse to keep paying for a bit of a story, then another bit of a story and then another bit of a story that just never seems to end.
Good luck to you and I hope you do well in your chosen career...but for the love of all that is Holy just write a whole book, not some 'Tune in next week" version of a book.
