- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2021There apparently are not many works of fiction dealing with Athens immediately after the Pelopponesian War, so this series is as illuminating as it is entertaining. The characters are well-developed, and the battle scenes expertly handled. But romance, unfortunately, is portrayed in a rather Victorian style--quite out-of-character for the time period. There are some surprising twists to the narrative, which makes it difficult to put the book down for long.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2019I don't think you will be disappointed in the least. A very enjoyable read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2019Full disclosure: I am related to the author and have watched this story grow and develop.
I grew up with historical fiction from Rosemary Sutcliff (Eagle of the Ninth), Mary Renault (The King Must Die) as a child to more recent times and Diana Gabaldon (the Outlander Series). In the hands of a writer with a strong sense of the time and place they write about, there is, to me, a wonderful sense of immersion in a this different location and culture – not only as an escape from the present but also as a place you want to return to time and again. In Daimon, the author has resurrected a now forgotten Athenian general who was greatly lauded and famed in his time and has honored this man by putting flesh on these historical bones. This is a first novel by someone who clearly loves the craft of spinning a story, who loves heroes and bad guys and most of all has immersed himself in the times of the Peloponnesian Wars and life in Athens under the Thirty Tyrants. It is certainly a story of war, but also of love and friendship and the quest for freedom. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars If life in Ancient Greece is of interest to you, this is your novel!
The book : Tyranny - A Demon of Athens Novel" is a historical novel written in the form of a memoir. The main character is Daimon, who has many extraordinary traits as well as ordinary ones that all of us have.
The book is a thoroughly exiting read. After a couple of chapters the ancient names become familiar and the reader is drawn into a part of history, before BCE, that is far removed from our lives and yet has so many similarities to it. Human emotions in life, in love and war are displayed and the reader becomes closely involved with it all.
I am looking forward to reading the second installment in Daimon's life.
Will it be available soon?

4.0 out of 5 stars Action adventure tragedy and politics what more can you ask for...
Firstly this is first and foremost an action adventure novel. The history is good. I am am an amateur historian and my specialised periods include the one depicted in this novel. I already know the timeline well and Mr Sulev has worked within the historical chronology brilliantly. Indeed his portrayal of Greek society and life strikes me as very plausible (it is a subject of which we know very little) However as I previously said this is first and foremost an adventure novel and it is superbly crafted one. I am stingy with stars but this one gets four. I had serious difficulty putting it down which is a pleasant surprise lately. Obviously I was aware of Thrasybulus and he is indeed often over shadowed by that arch contradiction that is Alcibiades. I have immediately bought the second volume and will begin very shortly and that should really tell you all you need to know

4.0 out of 5 stars This story is a very enjoyable read.
This is a story with it's roots solidly planted in ancient Greece. It is evident that Mr. Sulev has done a good deal of research including the works of modern historians as well a the writings of Thucydides and Xenophon all of which provides a very authentic touch to his first novel. It is set at a time when some in Athens are struggling to maintain their democracy while others wish to make the city-state an autocracy run by the wealthy. Do we see some present day parallels here? Daimon is a young lad whose mother is a Thracian slave and whose father is an Athenian of letters and a strong supporter of democracy. His family, except for his sister Meli, is killed by the tyrants. Daimon earns his shield and sword and sets out with vengeance in his heart. He joins with Thrasybulus, son of Lycus, who vows to release Athens from the shackles of the tyrants. Together they battle their foes who are aided by Sparta. The story moves at a good pace and is very well written. I highly recommend this novel for those who enjoy an action packed story with the flavour of ancient history.
