Watching You: A Psychological thriller with a killer twist (Detective Kerri Blasco Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,236 ratings

A cyber stalking serial killer TEXTS his victims first - but how does he get their phone numbers? A detective vows revenge. He comes after her.

In the chill of an October night,
Detective Kerri Blasco is called to a bizarre murder scene. Leda Winfield, a young volunteer for the homeless, has been shot. Her cell phone displays the frightening text, WATCHING YOU, and into her back, hideously pushed with a hat pin, is a note with the same awful message. Leda's socialite family and friends insist that no one would have wanted to harm her, but Detective Kerri isn't convinced.

Until another random young woman is killed in exactly the same way. Kerri and her team profile a monstrous killer who enjoys terrifying his victims before stalking and killing them. Soon Kerri finds that the killer is after her, too, and that the key to finding him may just be in the homeless shelter. When the body count rises, she vows to stop the madman - even if it means battling her own personal trauma, risking her job, her love relationship with her boss Alex Brand, and her life.

ADVANCE PRAISE FOR WATCHING YOU

"Wow, another gripping, fast paced thriller. Emotionally intense, ingenious in concept, an expertly woven plot, and an ending that left me gasping. Highly recommended!"
Literati Literature Lovers

"Though third in the series, this book can be read as a superb standalone. The plot is brilliant; also the terrifying concept - a killer cyber-stalking people VIA THEIR PHONES! On a more comforting note I just love Kerri, haunted by her painful past and hiding her secret love with the equally likable Alex. The whole book is well thought out, nonstop with twists and turns. I was left open-mouthed when the killer's identity was finally revealed. This is a totally gripping, chilling, fast-paced thriller and a fantastic addition to the series. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next one!"

"Terrifying, to start in the mind of the killer. 100% engrossing with not a single lull. I thought I had guessed, but the ending was a shock."
Goodreads reviewer

"WOWSERS, this series just gets better and better. I loved the first two but OMG, this has one seriously cold and twisted killer stalking a detective who's vowed revenge. What a fast-paced, gripping story with descriptions that made me squirm...I freaking loved it. 5 massive stars!"
Chelle's Book Reviews

"Ingenious and frightening because the killer's methods are so plausible. The most innocent and unaware are vulnerable. Previous Detective Kerri Blasco books are
Fear Dreams and Her Last Breath. All are highly recommended. Five stars!"Goodreads reviewer

"I just DEVOURED this and OMG FREAKING FANTASTIC! The twist at the end was absolutely stunning! And i just love Kerri and Alex, they rock! This is such a fantastically thrilling book!"
Melissa Shranz Reviews

Watching You by J.A. Schneider, 281 pages, RGS Media, April 25th 2017, Genre: Psychological Thriller/Suspense, ISBN: 1544767927. Warning: May Contain Spoilers.

“WATCHING YOU” says the text message each victim receives before their untimely demise. At first, it’s a mystery how the killer is choosing and tracking his prey. However, in this age of free-flowing information and cell phones, it’s much easier to stalk people than we like to think it is. A feeling of dread turns by degrees into horror as we realize how easy and plausible the killer’s methods are. Horror turns to panic as the reader realizes how difficult it would be to stop such a killer. In this third installment of the Kerri Blasco series, J.A. Schneider takes us on a trip of terror we’re not likely to soon forget.
The first victim, Leda Winfield, was a treasure to society, a lovely young woman who volunteered at the local shelter, helping the homeless. She was coldly executed with a single shot to the back of the head, a note that says “Watching You” pinned into her back with a hatpin. Nearby, the cops discover the victim’s cell phone, with a message from a few days prior showing the same words as in the note. As the detectives interview family and friends, they discover that there were plenty of people who may have had reasons to kill Leda. The stakes increase as another unrelated victim is discovered. When our heroine, Kerri Blasco, becomes the next target, the cat and mouse game has the highest stakes of them all. The story turns into a race against time as they seek the killer’s identity before he or she can take Kerri’s life.
In this phenomenal third book of the series, we learn more about Kerri’s background and gain valuable insight into her character. The relationship between Kerri and Alex Brand, her boss and lover, deepens and intensifies. Kerri considers where the relationship is heading and how that may impact her career. This decision is not made by the end of the book, but it’s something Kerri won’t be able to put off forever. The characters presented in the book were believable and interesting. Most fascinating of all, J.A. Schneider allows us inside the terrifying mind of the killer as he stalks his victims.
The plot is woven ingeniously. Usually I have figured out the mystery by the time the answer is revealed, but in this amazing new book, I was stumped. Delighted, I never saw it coming. Fast paced, heart pounding, and riveting, don’t miss out on this gripping psychological thriller. I deeply enjoyed reading Watching You. I’d recommend it to anyone who loves crime, mystery, or psychological thriller novels.

Being a lover of mysteries, this one caught my eye and started out pretty well. It keeps you guessing, but my suspicions were confirmed at the end of story. Guess I read too many mysteries! I did find that there were frequent repetitions of previous thoughts of main characters at certain times, that didn’t need to be said over and over, but in general, it wasn’t a bad read. Would probably read another book by this author, just as a comparison to this one and to see if her writing style is the same.

Book three of J.A. Schneider’s Kerri Blasco series, ‘Watching You’, is mesmerizing. Again, the police procedural populated with very believable and entertaining characters; again, a superb and original storyline where we the readers are quickly placed into the victims’ shoes and experience the fear and desperation as they realize they have no chance against their attacker. And this time, not only do we also live in the mind of the killer, privy to their innermost thoughts and devilish planning of the crimes, but Schneider’s protagonist, Kerri, is also on the murderer’s list of future victims. The pace of this tale will anchor you to your chair, so forget trying to take a break and do something else: the book will cry out to you to return and allow its author to submerge you again in the world of a New York City murder squad. Schneider outdoes herself with the twists this tale takes; almost everyone seems to be hiding something. It’s personal for Kerri and her boss (and love interest), and the insights into her thoughts as her mind rails against the pressure she finds herself under are fascinating.

I’ve just binge-read the first three books in the series, and this is a definite 6 Star read. Can’t recommend it enough!

I confess that I was prepared to hate this book, having just finished reading Fear Dreams, J. A. Schneider’s clumsy copycat version of the popular movie What Lies Beneath.

So in contrast to her earlier Fear Dreams, I was pleasantly surprised to find Watching You a decently written, though derivative thriller, earning Ms. Schneider a respectable three stars. To her credit, her manuscript was relatively free of editorial errors. I counted four minor ones, and two which were not so minor.

A young, idealistic woman from a rich family is brutally murdered in the Bowery neighborhood of New York City where she worked at a homeless shelter. The serial killer diabolically texts his prey with the ominous message Watching You (in caps) and pins that message to their bodies to taunt the police. Naturally he is targeting the female detective investigating the case as his next victim. This plot pretty much echoes the dozens of books which have appeared like clockwork ever since The Silence of the Lambs did it first and better decades ago.

Ms. Schneider describes her book’s climactic twist as “mind-bending.” I call it contrived — and I call her self-promotional description “wishful thinking.” But either way, Watching You was a nice piece of conventional entertainment.

By the way, the readers who claim to have figured out whodunnit before the end are full of themselves — and full of something else too. They may have “guessed” who the killer was based on no evidence whatsoever, but they couldn’t have figured it out, because unfairly or not, Ms. Schneider withholds a piece of vital information to the very end which is necessary to identify the real killer.

This is #3 in the Kerri Blasco series and I didn't feel like I missed much so it could be read as a stand-a-lone. What surprised me was that there was nary a foul word throughout the book. If you are looking for such a book this would be a good series. I sort of thought that maybe this person might be the killer, but then I'd say "Nah, can't be". This is a well written mystery with a unique plot and the characters seem real. I don't think you'd be disappointed in this one.

Detective Kerri Blasco has a lot on her plate. She has to keep her love interest a secret, she catches the heart-breaking murder of a naïve volunteer—and oh yes, she’s on a murderer’s list.

“It’s starting to get dark. I am thrilled again, shaking with new excitement. The feeling swells, a hot, furious balloon of new daring in my chest. I’m relieved, too. The chicken voice has stopped. I’m coming for you . . .”

I loved the book! The title is quite correct . . . Watching You is a terrifying thriller with a mind-bending twist.
