- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHeartfelt historical romance with complicated interesting characters. The writing is gorgeous and the story holds interest throughout. If you are looking for a solid FF romance, that you think about well after the reading, this is it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI typically can read books rather quickly, but this took me a while to get through. It wasn’t boring and didn’t drag necessarily, but I just wasn’t captivated enough to fly through it in one day. But it was well written and a very descriptive historical narrative.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI think this may be my favorite new lesfic novel. I read it once, then read it again, savoring every sentence. The well-woven intricacy of detail and the rhythmic metaphors made this a joyful reading journey. Some novels are bogged down with useless, boring, heavy details written like a police report that do nothing to construct and inform the story. But the details in this book were laid out gently, beautifully, in ways that allowed us as readers to relate and build that narrative world based on our own rememberances. Tui, a week-old infant, is described so precisely that he becomes a main character from the first chapter and reminded me of every infant I ever held in my arms--that same innocence and beauty and awe of a fragile new life. I loved this book and I love this writer. Read Alice & Jean, too.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI just finished this book and I want more! There are a few (too few) authors who really know how to tell a story, one that keeps you turning pages. Lily Hammond is one of those authors and this is one of those stories!
May Lewis is the new doctor in a tiny town in New Zealand. Eadie McClintock is a farmer in the town, but Eadie has more problems than can ever be found on a farm. She has been shunned by the townsfolk, but not for the reasons you would think.
May and Eadie meet under tragic circumstances, and their relationship stops and starts with the problems each of them encounter in the town. Read this book to become entwined in their story and the stories of the people who surround them!
Apparently, there is a sequel coming out in 2019. I can't wait to see what happens to May and Eadie!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat a wonderful story this author has created. Eadie and May and the whole town are all great characters. Looking forward to the rest of their story.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2018Format: KindleJust fine. Predictable and true to every other book in this genre. Is statutory rape not a crime? I do not expect every author to be Sarah Waters or Emma Donahue but please stop being soooo repetitive. It was the same on every page. Come to think of it, all these books are the same. No writer dates take a chance. Yes, just fine.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2018Format: KindleA doctor relocates to a small town to take over a clinic who's previous Dr has gone off to war. She meets an outcast woman who has some things to hide.
There was a lot more to this story than just romance. It touched on family, loss, and friendship.
The writing was good and there were a few times I was surprised.
The inner monologue of the characters sometimes went on for a bit longer than I would have liked. But it definitely aided in deeply understanding the feelings.
I thought this was very good.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved this book. What a lovely story. It is wonderful to read a lesbian themed historical romance. I hope Lily Hammond will be writing more in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly beautiful
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat a beautiful story of courage and love. Set in rural NZ south island during WWII when conscription was a hugely contentious issue, large enough to divide a town's loyalties. May, the new doctor in the town, sets out to right a wrong that has turned the town against Eadie and her brother Terry, who with intellectual disabilities, is hiding from the law to avoid conscription. After meeting Terry, May knows that he is unfit for service.
Hammond has captured the bleakness of the landscape and weather beautifully and it compliments the depiction of the townsfolk as they are stirred into action by a malicious woman hellbent on revenge for past wrongs.
As May tries to seek dispensation for Terry, she grows closer to Eadie and an innocent and sweet romance develops.
This was an unexpectedly good read that I could not put down. The characters are mesmerising and the story heartwarming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI’ve been on a bit of a Lilly Hammond/Kate Genet/Ana McKenzie tear of late. Mostly because the books are soooo well written. This one has been pumped by various authors I have read and so I finally gave it a go. I was not disappointed. Really looking forward to the sequel.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEddie and May’s story is such a quintessential small town romance. Doctor falls in love with a farmer, town folk playing a part in their story peripherally. It was nice and sweet. However, comparing this story to Lily Hammond’s other novels I think this is my least favourite. It’s nothing major, just the sickeningly sweet attraction of the main characters put me off a bit. The town, setting and landscape however was perfectly mocked up.
