What We Deserve: a 'who hurt you' workplace romance! (Wishbone Tattoos Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 718 ratings

I’m used to being alone, until she changed everything... When my ex-wife left, she said the cruelest words she could think of, and I took them all to heart. Now I work at my loveable bastard cousin’s tattoo parlor and keep most people at arm’s length. I have the occasional one night stand to take the edge off, but there can never be anything more than that for me. I don’t let myself think about how lonely I am. At least I’m not ruining anyone’s life, right? Then Emily walks into Wishbone Tattoos, asking about the receptionist job. And this shy, smiling, kindhearted woman is everything I’ve ever wanted. I can’t help falling for her, even though I know I mustn't, for both our sakes. But there’s something about Emily I don’t know. Something that will make her the exception to my hard and fast rule... She’s battle scarred herself, and running scared from a dark past which snaps at her heels, but I’m not going to let anyone hurt her ever again, I swear to god. And maybe, if we’re lucky and we both want it hard enough, the two of us will finally get what we deserve.

Sweet,
What We Deserve by Lizzie Stanley ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 I am SO grateful that someone recommended to me! It was one of my most enjoyable reads of 2022. This is the debut of @lizziestanleyauthor and let me tell you… it does not read like it. You would never guess that this is her first published book! The writing has beautiful flow, the characters are completely developed, and it overall has the mature feel that usually only comes with a very practiced hand. This is one of those books where you wholly trust the author after reading just one chapter. You know she will not be leading you astray. Your time will be well spent while in her literary world. 📝 Summary: starting over in a new town with a mission to unearth who she was meant to be, Emily takes a receptionist job at a tattoo parlor (Wishbone Tattoos), where she meets who will become her ✨found family✨— Leo, Dean, Eli, and Sadie. That’s all I’m going to tell you. What I loved about this book: ⭐️ The ages of the characters! It’s so lovely to read a book about characters my age— almost 30/in their 30s. It gave the book a believable, mature feel. ⭐️ The unique cultural background of the characters. Cajun + British made for some beautifully unique dialogue. ⭐️ The pace of the romance. This was truly one of the best burn speeds I’ve ever read. It wasn’t the slow burn model of “let’s keep our pent up feelings a secret until we COMBUST or are forced to reveal them”. Instead, we get a believable + unbelievably adorable progression of a crush that is told from the point of view of everyone in the parlor. It could not be more precious, and it was by far my favorite part of the book. I could and would happily read 300 pages of just the buildup of and commentary on the mutual crush. ⭐️ The meet. The heroine doesn’t meet the hero first! They don’t meet by bumping into each other! A contemporary romance miracle. Thank you 🙏 ⭐️ The balance of both internal and external conflicts was ✨perfection✨. What We Deserve is everything I want in a contemporary romance— sweet, spicy, mature, and believable. The author is working on the second book in this series, but this book is a complete story & reads as a standalone.

The prologue drew me in, had my heart pounding…it hints at the story to come and made me voracious for more. I really needed to know how we got to that point! As I settled into the story I fell in love with the characters at Wishbone Tattoos. Each and everyone of them is special, they are a family with a bond that is strong, so endearing, and I could only wish to be part of that family. The plot flowed smoothly from start to finish, Stanley did a great job providing the back story that led to that moment in time in the prologue. It was an emotional journey, I laughed, I swooned, and I had tears in my eyes.

The main characters in this book are Eli and Emily – he is a huge, tattooed bear of a man, yet his love of family and his strong, silent demeanor, and his patience are so sexy and his dirty talking Cajun accent is just the cherry on top. I loved everything about him, even when I wanted to shake him when his past kept him from moving forward. Emily came to Wishbone Tattoos looking for a job, little did she know she would find her new family, people who accept her for her and love her regardless. She is strong, resilient, and determined to put her traumatic past behind her. She is beautiful inside and out, loving, quick to smile and nerdy, which I loved. The attraction between her and Eli is instantaneous, their love story is a slow burn that combusts.

While I absolutely loved Eli and Emily and I was invested in their ultimate HEA, I equally loved Leo, Dean, and Sadie. Their characters and stories were woven so intricately into Eli and Emily’s story that the book would not be complete without them. I really want to see them get their HEA’s as well.

This is Lizzie Stanley’s debut novel and she knocked it out of the park, I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next. I loved the way she kept the authenticity of Eli and Emily’s heritage – he is American and she is English – so when they are providing their POV, the reader will notice that the spelling of certain will differ depending on whose POV it is (parlor vs. parlour). Stanley also touches on some sensitive topics that could be a trigger for some. This definitely gets the fis_views stamp of approval and is a must for any TBR.

No doubt this author has potential as this is her debut book. I found the characters delightful, and enjoyed their playful dialogue. I just felt the story stretched a bit and I kept waiting for drama to happen. It eventually did happen so I was glad I kept reading, I just had to get through all the ewws and awws with the characters relationship evolving. The last 6 chapters were a quick read for me but the first 22 I had difficulty wanting to read. I forsee a book 2 that will hopefully shed light on Sadie and Leo.

There is so much that I loved about this book. I'll keep this spoiler free so you can enjoy it as much as I did (if you haven't done so already).

Emily is just the sweetest, most genuine person in much need of a fresh start. She can't believe her luck when she lands a receptionist job at Wishbone Tattoos. Though Emily struggles with self-confidence, she's quickly welcomed into the Wishbone family. And let me tell you... every single person of the Wishbone family is a-m-a-z-i-n-g. Lizzie managed to create a story with characters so well developed, I feel like I know them! I might actually drive to Foxton to see if I can find this tattoo parlour!

The relationship between cousins Eli, Dean and Leo - Ugh... loved it. They wind each other up, sure. But they always have each other's backs and I thoroughly enjoyed getting a glimpse into each of their thoughts. That's right... you don't just get to read this story from Emily and Eli's perspectives, you get to read Leo and Dean's as well.

Then there's Sadie, the final member of Wishbone Tattoos and epic friend to Emily. For parts of this book, I wanted to shake Sadie because well... you'll have to read to find out. But let's just say... sometimes what you need is closer than you think.

The love story between Eli and Emily was so tender as it grew into a consuming need for one another. Both Eli and Emily have emotional scars but soon discover that they're the perfect balm to heal each other. Their love is real, passionate, and swoon worthy. Eli is the perfect gentleman, and the perfect hunk of muscle between the sheets   so you're sure to get your fill of romance and heat within these pages.

I loved the humour sprinkled throughout, especially from Leo. Aaaah, Sir Leo... swoon!! Not only did Leo make me laugh, but he's the sweetest man and my heart ached for him on more than one occasion. I cannot wait to see if he gets his HEA because dammit, he deserves it!

Dean stole my heart straight away. A traumatic event has left Dean with scars of his own and the support he receives from the Wishbone family, Eli in particular, is simply heartwarming. Bravo for tackling a sensitive issue like this and doing it with such tact.

Overall, this book had everything I love in a romance. It had tension, made me laugh, swoon, get hot under the collar and I couldn't help but root for Eli and Emily from the beginning! But more than that, I fell in love with the side characters as well and I cannot wait to see what's next for the Wishbone clan.

There were many phrases that I highlighted as I read, but in the end, it was this one that stood out most. I simply love it!!

"I can feel his beats and mine clashing, out of perfect sync but still together, and it feels like the best kind of chaos."

5.0 out of 5 stars Characters that will hook you in!

I read this book a few weeks ago and it’s still in my thoughts. While Lizzie has written a beautiful, heart wrenching story that gives you all kinds of feels, it’s the characters that haven’t left my mind.

Gah! This book had me not only hooked on the main characters, Eli and Emily’s story, but desperate to read the stories of the secondary characters… like now!

If you want a book with a slow burn, work place romance, strong characters that are both rebuilding themselves from past relationships and a love story that they truly deserve. This is for you!

Oh and I forgot to mention… they work in a tattoo parlor!!! Need I say more.

But be warned… you will be just as obsessed with the wishbone team as I am.

This book was SO cute and wholesome ❤️❤️

"... this is the cutest thing I have ever seen. They’re into each other. They are so into each other that it’s tangible, an extra guest at the table."
    - this is how, one of the side characters describes the MCs Emily and Eli near the beginning of the book. And this is exaactly how I felt reading the book throughout 💙

I've had this book on my KU library for ages, and I started it a couple days ago because I saw that the author was planning to release an extended epilogue.. and I was thinking I'll read the book over a few days and then get to the epilogue. In no way did I expect to be SO hooked to the book. It was warm and wholesome throughout, but just in the overall storyline, but also in each scene, in the words used to describe each scene. This is Lizzie Stanley's debut book, but she's written the book like a pro. The writing flows really well, to the point that you *can't* keep it down - and it's not just because there are twists and turns glueing you to the book, it's because every scene makes you smile :)

I finished the book within 12 hours (well I forced myself to take a break in the middle so that I could enjoy it for longer). And then I spent the next two rereading and rereading it, because the book is really so good. I can't wait to read book 2 ❤️

This is book 1 of the Wishbone Tattoo Series. We meet all the main people and the world revolves around everyone who works in the tattoo parlour.  This book primarily focuses on Eli and Emily.  Eli is one of the artists and Emily is new to town, after escaping a traumatic past. The book is a slow burn but the storyline keeps you turning the page.  I loved seeing all of the characters interacting and how we got the perspectives of the other characters.  The book is heartfelt and I need more of this world! I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!
