White Russian (Jack Daniels Book 16) Kindle Edition
HUMAN TRAFFICKING, SNUFF FILMS, AND ONE WOMAN OUT FOR REVENGE...
Just when you get out…
Former Chicago cop Jack Daniels thought she’d left her former life behind. She’d traded her badge for a toddler, and her lifelong pursuit of heinous serial killers for a boring house in the suburbs.
…they pull you back in.
Then Jack sees some pictures. Pictures of men who were supposed to be dead. And once again, against the fierce insistence of her husband, Phineas Troutt, Jack reluctantly straps on her gun and goes hunting. Hunting for the worst of the worst.
This leads to a trek across the Great Plains, searching for a modern slavery ring, on a collision course with three of the most horrible villains Jack has ever faced.
But Jack, and her irritating buddy Harry McGlade, will face them, and much more. Because they’re prepared to go to hell and back to rescue an old friend.
The trick will be getting back in one piece. And—spoiler alert—they don’t.

From the Inside Flap
Q: Did you always want to be a writer?
Joe: No. I wanted to be a model for husky pants. But then, when I was barely a teen, they stopped making husky sizes.
Damn those clothing designers for shattering my dreams.
Q: When did you decide to become a writer?
Joe: I mean, I'm not offended by the term "husky." Now they're called "relaxed fit" jeans. It's the same thing, but there's nothing sexy about being a "relaxed fit jeans" model. Husky sounds like you're owning those extra pounds, making them work for you. Relaxed fit sounds like you eat too much and are just plain lazy.
What was your question again? Ideas? I hunt through James Patterson's garbage, and steal what he tossed. When Patterson throws out ten pages, that's like fifty chapters.
Ha ha ha! Get it? Because his chapters are so short! I swear, the last Patterson book I read had more chapters than page numbers.
Actually, I just watch old Outer Limits episodes and appropriate the plots, like Alan Moore did with Watchmen.
Q: Who do you like to read?
Blake Crouch, Ann Voss Peterson, Jeff Strand, Henry Perez, F. Paul Wilson, Tom Schreck. Pretty much anyone I collaborate with. Because here's a dirty little secret: when you co-write a book with someone, you kind of have to read the stuff they wrote.
My absolute favorite author is Dr. Seuss. In fact, I tried my hand at writing a few Dr. Seuss-style children's books. Here are the titles:
HOW THE GRINCH STOLE MY WIFE
HORTON HATCHES A TERRORIST PLOT
ON BEYOND DONKEY PUNCH
MARVIN K MOONEY WILL YOU PLEASE DROP DEAD
THE CAT IN THE HAT GETS NEUTERED
GREEN EGGS AND E COLI
THIDWICK THE BIG HEARTED COKE DEALER
MR. BROWN CAN MOO, AND THEY PUT HIM AWAY
THERE'S A WOCKET IN MY POCKET, AND I BLAME CIALIS
BOOMER THE TUMOR
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to sell any of these. I think it may be some sort of rights-issue thing.
Q: What's a work day in the life of Joe Konrath like?
Joe: I wake up early and make some eggs.
Then the smoke alarm goes off, because the eggs are burning because I fell asleep again.
Then I spend ten minutes explaining to the firemen that show up how I'll be more careful next time.
I go back to bed, and the next thing I know, it's around noon. Time for lunch. I want to make an egg sandwich, but I'm out of eggs. And bread. And pretty much everything except some sort of fruit that's been in the refrigerator forever and might be a lime. Or not. It may not even be fruit. So I put it back and think about cooking some pasta but that seems like a lot of work for just lunch, so I go take a nap.
Around three I get up, ready to start my work day, but first I need to eat something. Do pizza places deliver at three? I make a few calls. Nope, no one delivers before five.
I check the fridge. The lime thing is still there, but it looks like it moved from where I saw it last. How odd. Did it move by itself? I'm really hungry, so I decide to give it a try.
It's not a lime, because limes don't have bones.
When I finish eating, I sit down at my computer and write my daily quota, thirty pages.
Q: What's next for Joe Konrath?
Joe:This Spring, Carson's will be releasing my signature scent, called Nocturnal Emission. Available in parfum, eau du toilet, cologne, and roll on. I like the roll on. It tickles my armpits. My goal is to make enough money to buy Nebraska. Then I'll rename it Joebraska, and invite all of my friends to visit. We're going to have a big party in the state capital, Joemaha. You can come, if you want.
Q: Do you want to talk at all about your books?
Joe: Nope. Not really.

About the author

Joe Konrath has written over twenty novels in the Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels thriller series. They do not have to be read chronologically to be enjoyed, but the order is: Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Shot of Tequila, Fuzzy Navel, Cherry Bomb, Dead On My Feet, Serial Killers Uncut (with Blake Crouch), Shaken, Stirred (with Blake Crouch), Dying Breath, Everybody Dies, Rum Runner, Last Call, White Russian, Shot Girl, Chaser, Old Fashioned, Bite Force, and Witch Brew. More coming soon.
Wow, that's a lot of Jack.
If you like your thrillers on the dark side, check out the Konrath Dark Thriller Collective, which includes the books The List, Origin, Afraid, Trapped, Endurance, Haunted House, Webcam, Disturb, What Happened To Lori, The Nine, Second Coming, and Close Your Eyes.
Joe also wrote the Stop A Murder mystery puzzle series, where you become the sleuth and solve brain teasers to try and catch a killer.
He also wrote the sci-fi trilogy, Timecaster, Timecaster Supersymmetry, and Timecaster Steampunk. Even if you don't think you like sci-fi, give them a try. They feature Joe's well-known characters from his other series, and are insane.
With Ann Voss Peterson he wrote the Codename: Chandler thrillers, including Flee, Spree, Three, Hit, Exposed, Naughty, Fix (with F. Paul Wilson), Rescue, and Free.
And, finally, he writes erotica under the pen name Melinda DuChamp, also with Ann Voss Peterson. Those books are probably too spicy for you, so only the brave and bold should seek them out.
Joe writes a lot. You should probably read everything.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOMG.... I always wait in tense anticipation for the next episode of the Jack Daniels series so there is no way I am ever going to give less than a 5 star review to Mr. Konrath. As mentioned previously, I typically hate these types of police thrillers, but Mr. Konrath creates such varied loveable heroes, heroines, and villains that I am salivating to read more. They are just too much fun. You’ve got suspense, adventure, comedy, and horror mixed up in one. This is my one reading vice.... I love to be entertained and whip through the pages. I always get that with this author. (BTW, Mr. Jack Kilborn..... I am also waiting in VERY tense anticipation, biting my nails to the quick, waiting for your next novel. Hurry up or the Cowboy will be extracting fingernails instead of teeth on my behalf)
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFast paced, over the top thriller. I love the characters. They are believable so that you care about them. I did not want the book to end.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe gang's (mostly) all here. McGlade talks Jack into "one last one" and she, questioning her judgement all the way, leaves Gil/Phineas and their daughter behind, gets into the Crimebago Duex, and off they go, Jack questioning her sanity with every mile.
Unbeknownst to either of them, riding along are little twin psychos posing as videographers. Boy, are they messed up, as shown in flash backs into them growing up.
Memories of the last book are brought up constantly. I swear I read all of this series but missed it. Downloaded and ready to catch up.
Memories of the psychos Jack and Herb have brought down are also recalled (with convenient links to the books on Amazon) are here. As we know, with Harry's assistance (Harry barely tolerated) they took down some really bad ones. Some of the worst being women. But the psychos (yes, more than usual this time) they are up against in this outing are truly whacked.
With the exception of not remembering the last book, this is exceptional, living up to the Konrath brand. The ending may leave a long time reader in tears, as it did me. Is there another Jack Daniels book coming? Only the author knows.
While this CAN be read as a stand alone book, new readers would be well advised to read others first.
Probably the best of the series. But I think that about all of them.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI continue to read this series because I’m invested in the characters, I guess. But as the series gets more gratuitous in its violence and the plots ever more implausible it becomes hard to enjoy. But I liked how Jack’s character evolved in this installment and there where some humorous moments that made me chuckle. I’m guessing as Konrath has continued to push the envelope it’s unlikely he will back off. But I would sure enjoy them more if he would return to the tone of the first 4 or 5 books in the series and leave the gore to his horror novels.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have read over 20 of J.A. Konrath's "Jacqueline 'Jack' Daniels" crime thrillers and WHITE RUSSIAN is prolly my absolute fav, being as how I read it a few years back and just re-read it today: I had forgotten how truly great it is.
Konrath's "Jack Daniels" family of unique characters and his brilliant sense of humor never fails to disappoint.
BRAVO!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWell if you like stupid you will like this book. This author is really going off the deep end...he does have an imagination.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI love Jack Daniels (the books, not so much the whiskey). They never disappoint, and White Russian is no exception. Kept me guessing and still managed to make me say "Wait..what?" Konrath definitely plumbs the depths of human depravity and his books are not for the squeamish, but he is a darn good writer and a better story teller, and he shows us the best side of humanity juxtaposed with the worst. Truly satisfying read.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseJ.A. Korath is my favorite author. He is obviously very intelligent with an amazing imagination. I like the continuous action with no unnecessary extra filler words. Don't like that he is disrepectful by using the Lord's name in vain but I so hope I meet him, his wife and family in the
afterlife (see you in heaven). I also enjoy his horror stories. My best loved characters are Woof and Mathison. I absolutely adore that he's so obviously in love with his wife.

2.0 out of 5 stars Blood, Gore and Insane cruelty
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book isn't for anyone with a weak stomach. In many ways it's fairly well written but the contents are just sickening in many ways in how cruel and inhumane people can be. It should come with a warning like some TV shows about the contents containing violence that may offend some people.
