About the authors
Author T. Novan, has been writing his entire life. His love of the craft and his desire to master the art started young, when he won a community creative writing contest at the age of 8 with a short story about how mankind would settle future disputes over a chessboard. 40 years later, he realized that after working a variety of jobs including auto mechanic, police officer and even chimpanzee keeper, it was time to return to the one thing that he simply cannot deny – his love of and need to write.
He is married, with one daughter and three grandchildren. He currently lives about 20 minutes outside of Richmond, Virginia, on the grounds of the Confederate headquarters of Battle of Cold Harbor. A “gentleman farmer” with a small family homestead, he tends his flock of chickens and his miniature donkey, and writes.
After being in semi-retirement from the writing world for nearly a decade, T.N. has re-emerged with the re-release of classic titles like Madam President, First Lady and Words Heard in Silence (Book 1 of the Redmond Family Saga). He and his wife, Taylor Rickard, are actively working on the next two books in the Saga. Paths of Peace, Book 2, will be released in time for Christmas of 2015, and Enemies in the Gates (Book 3) will be released in January/February of 2016.
Taylor Rickard has an unusual background. She was raised in the south by a grandmother whose love of Southern history and traditions was instilled in her from an early age. Her grandmother’s dreams for her life included being presented at the St. Cecilia’s Cotillion, marriage to a nice boy from the Citadel, and a life of doing research for the Huguenot Society of South Carolina and raising lovely little Children of the Confederacy. That didn’t happen. She grew up to have multiple careers in her life.
She has been a chef, a television producer/director and an information technology architect. But it was that love and knowledge of all things southern that lead her and her partner, T. Novan to begin what would become a saga that follows the lives of a family through the end of the Civil War, the pain of the Reconstruction, and the extravagance of the Gilded Age – so far!
She now lives with her partner on a small farm in rural Kentucky, working her day job, writing at night, and feeding her family and friends from her extraordinary collection of traditional recipes from around the world.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2021If you have ANY interest in the Civil War or post Civil War era of American history, then this series is for you. The latest book in the Redmond family saga, we see the Redmond kids growing up, the family facing new challenges, and through it all loving and supporting one another (even when that means a kick in the pants!) Meticulously researched, you will not find any literary equivalents of air canisters on chariots or full kilts on Scots, 100s of years before it was a thing. Just good, solid writing and a wonderful storyline.

A must read for team Charlie/Rebecca fans
This book contains the continuation story from where our heroes have taken us throughout their relationship. From the moment I started reading their story, I knew I was hooked.
“Whither Thou Goest” time warped me with Charlie and Rebecca back in Virginia. Charlie and Rebecca’s relationship had been solidified to stand the test of time. The author did a particularly good job in creating a parallel to the devotion Charlie and Rebecca have for each other. The author did not lose time in gently leading us in a tragedy early on in the book.
It must also be said that their children’s story was intertwined and elaborated to both a predictable and unpredictable event. As a fan of the Redmond family saga, I was happy to learn more about the Redmond children. It is not hidden that the three eldest children have a definitive role to play. Papa’s girl, Emily, had me so engrossed. She leads a life independently yet grounded to the enrichment of her education.
The title itself relates a general idea that Charlie and Rebecca have each other throughout many challenges as leader in the community, and together as head of household.
Without going into too much detail about the plot in the book, this is a incredibly good wholesome story to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2024I read the first 3 books back in 2016. I actually corresponded with one of the authors T. Novan. I had mentioned possibly a future movie. I didn’t know about the other 3 books until August of this year. I went back and read the first 3 and just finished book 6. I absolutely love Charlie and Rebecca’s story. I will miss these characters and their family. What an amazing story. I also went back and read Madam President and First Lady. I think that story would probably be more practical as a movie because telling Charlie and Rebecca’s story would have to be a mini series along the same lines as North and South. Thank you to all the authors of both stories for many hours of pure enjoyment.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2021This was a wonderful series. I loved this family and loved how they were woven through time and the events that shaped their lives.
Even though it isn't a conventional love story, it is about how two people who loved one another truly and honorably lived their lives side by side through a time when our country fell apart and then rebuilt itself.
I loved this series and was truly sad to see it end.
Maybe the authors would consider another series with the children's lives for us to enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2021Another absolutely fantastic book.... I look forward to visiting the dear friends and characters created in this story... Just with they would write faster!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2023I have enjoyed this series immensely. I really hate to see the story end. I truly hope there are more books to come for this series! This is one of the best historical lesbian books that I've read!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW
I have read this series so many times, I've lost count. And yet here I find myself wanting the next book now. The story cannot end here. It's an excellent series. It has great characters that you really spend time getting to know. The authors allow this because each character adds to the overall quality of life back then. Each of them teaches us something new.
Charlie and Rebecca are the main characters. Amazing, progressive and supportive individuals. The world needs more people like Charlie and Rebecca.
Can you read these individually? I guess yes because the authors offer a prologue at the beginning of each book. But I wouldn't recommend it. The whole series has a story to tell. It starts with the first word. Now I really need number 7. But I really hope there is never a last word.
It all starts with the American Civil War. And gets better from there.
Seriously...you need to read these books. Brilliant doesn't even start to describe them.
Enjoy!

As usual a great read, follows on nicely from previous books, would love to see this as a Hallmark/Netflix series, unfortunately can't see this happening
