An International Thriller Writers Award finalist.

To Rebecca it was a brave decision that led to her freedom from domestic abuse. To Solomon it was the ultimate betrayal.

It’s been ten years since Rebecca’s testimony saw Solomon locked away. Enough time for the nightmares to recede, the nerves to relax; enough time to rebuild her life and put the past behind her.

Then one day a phone rings in her bedroom—but it’s not her phone. Solomon has been in her home, and has a very simple message for her: for each of the ten years he has spent in jail, Rebecca must witness a crime. And, to make matters worse, she has to choose the victims.

Fail to respond and you get hurt. Talk to the police and you die. Ready to play? You have sixty seconds to decide…

As the crimes grow more severe, the victims closer to home, Rebecca is forced to confront a past she had hoped was gone forever.

Thriller featuring a morally bereft psychopath and an abuse victim
I have read this author before and thoroughly enjoyed her work. This time out, I was less enthused – and I know that my opinions of this title might be unpopular. The writing was clever, and the author very knowledgeable about her subject matter as she worked with domestic abuse cases when she worked as a CID police detective. The setting was one I loved. Pontyferry, was a small, neighbourly community in Wales. The story’s protagonist was a victim of horrific abuse, mostly emotional manipulation, but some physical abuse as well. I wanted to feel more for her than I did, but found I just couldn’t. She seemed complicit in her own fate. This was a school teacher who was very bright, and was blinded by her infatuation at first, but after that, she should have tried harder to get away from Solomon who was clearly a psychopath. Later, when Solomon was released from prison, she was again made to be complicit in his controlling and manipulative behavior – and his crimes. In my opinion, she had the chance to redeem her situation, yet her fear overcame her brains. There was an awesome plot twist near the end, yet this if anything, caused me to be even less sympathetic to Rebecca’s character. The book was a page-turner, yet Solomon’s evil and psychopathic behavior made me want to skim over some of his despicable actions. Rebecca’s plight was horrific, and that was difficult to read at times as well. If you love tense situations, moral dilemmas, and a plot twist or two, then you very well might love this suspenseful novel. Hopefully, you’ll love it a bit more than I did.

Witness is a thriller about a woman named Rebecca who found herself in an abusive relationship, but was able to escape and send her abusive controlling fiancé to prison. Ten years later, he's released from prison and is contacting her again. Angry about her testimony against him, he forces her to watch him commit crimes against people she knows and loves, and threatens to kill her if she goes to the police.

Rebecca, living now as Becky is now married and living in a new city has tried to put her ex Solomon in the past, and move forward with her husband and daughter. When she finds a phone in her house that wasn't hers, she realizes Solomon has not only found out where she lives, but has been inside of her house. When she starts receiving texts on the phone, she realizes he's playing with her. Each text lists a crime that will be committed against someone she knows unless she nominates someone else to be attacked. As the crimes grow increasingly more severe, Rebecca has to find a way out of this before he comes after her, and on top of that, she doesn't tell her husband what's going on, so their relationship becomes strained as she starts acting strange.

The book is told in alternating timelines, flipping back and forth between present time and the past, as told through diary entries, when she first meets Solomon, up through the point where she gets him arrested. I loved reading the flashback chapters and understanding how her relationship with Solomon starts and how he ropes her in before the abuse starts.

I think most people who have known me for a while know that I'm obsessed with books about stalkers/someone being stalked (I don't know what it is about them, but I love them!!) so I was so excited to get approved for Witness on Netgalley.

I adored this book, and when I wasn't reading it, I sure was thinking about it! I found myself checking the locks on my doors, and pulling my curtains closed because it was such a creepy book (in the best possible way!) It had me terrified for Rebecca, and on the edge of my seat the entire book, dying to find out how she'd manage to get away. There was one part of the book that I definitely saw coming early on, but overall I was dying to find out how everything would end!

I definitely recommend this book for all thriller lovers! Fans of Elizabeth Haynes Into the Darkest Corner will love Witness. It's five huge stars from me, and I'd give it more if I could!

A huge thank you to Netgalley, Caroline Mitchell, and Thomas and Mercer for the opportunity to read and review this novel.

Wow. I could not put this book down. It definitely was suspenseful. I've never read a book before with a perspective from a murderer. It was interesting and disgusting at the same time. I struggled with liking the main female charater, Rebecca, because she was allowing these things to happen...but then I understood why she was letting these things happen. It was a catch 22 both ways. Another topic that was prevalent was abuse in a relationship. The author made you fall in love with Solomon in the beginning, much like Rebecca. And shortly into the relationship, you see signs of abuse. He takes control of her life basically and tries to isolate her from her friends and work. Number one red flag of abuse. You wanted to yell at her to get away. And then you yelled at her for staying. But I understand why the author wrote this book, I think. It isn't always that easy to leave. Period.

The ending definitely surprised me. I don't want to give too much away but the ending will definitely surprise you. If you like suspenseful novels, this one is definitely for you!
I would read more of Caroline Mitchell in the future.

I really enjoyed this until the ending.

The ending ruined it for me because
    1. I saw it coming but was hoping I was wrong.
    2. She was so concerned about what was happening to all these people she knew and yet
she killed someone to save herself? I feel like that is kind of a contradicting story line.
Is she someone who is OK with the killing or not? She can do it but if someone else does it's terrible and wrong.
She feels worse for these people that Solomon is hurting than she does for the person she killed?
    3. I felt like the "he tried to rape me" part was just thrown in there so we didn't feel bad that she killed this guy.
Solomon did rape her, she should have just killed him if that was the case.

Rebecca is targeted by Solomon a controlling killer who wants to dominate her. The lengths and planning he goes through are frightening as he gradually takes away everything in her life.. When he goes to far and goes to jail for one of his murders, Rebecca moves on and starts a new life. Now Solomon is out after ten years on good behavior and his only thought is to kill everyone in Rebecca's new life. This story is hard to put down and chilling and the twists never stop.

    Another winner from Caroline Mitchell.
I struggled sometimes to continue reading. Not because it was in any way badly written, quite the opposite. Domestic abuse is awful. But it needs to be highlighted and Caroline does an awesome job.

Today is my turn on Caroline Mitchell's blog tour for Witness.
I was very pleased when I heard that share new book was to be launched by Caroline Mitchell. All of her books have been superb.
This book really went beyond what I expected. The characters were well written and had pushed the envelope.
Reading this book was hard as well as rewarding. The content is very hard to read. Anything dealing with abuse is hard but what I liked is it took it further and made it a revenge story from the bad guys side.
Truly an amazing book and one that I highly recommend to anyone who loves the deeply character centric books.
Caroline Mitchell has a real talent with writing some of the best characters I have read about. This book really showcases her talents.
One of my top reads of 2016.

Witness was read in 1 sitting (which is extremely rare for me) with a knot in my stomach that lingered long after the last page.
Witness takes the unsavoury subject matter of domestic violence and delivers it from the aspect of the two main characters - Rebecca, the suffering, mentally and physically abused "heroine" and her ex lover/partner/fiancé: Solomon - a nasty psycho mind control freak . The past is revealed through extracts of Rebecca's diary.
Mitchell's story-telling is genius and despite my frustration at Rebecca's decision making I understood why she made those decisions. And I defy anyone who reads Witness to claim they saw the end twist coming ... what a totally unexpected head-on freight train crash that is!
Witness is a psychological thriller that cannot be missed.

‘Witness’ is the new stand alone thriller from Caroline Mitchell, published under the Thomas & Mercer brand. A real step away from the police procedurals for which she is known, from the very beginning you get a real sense of the urgency and pace of the story. The story opens up in the immediate aftermath of the murder, a moment in time where Rebecca makes a decision which will forever change her future. From here on in, the sense of foreboding builds and builds and from the very moment we meet Solomon, you know that this is a man who will not stop until he has exacted his revenge against those he feels have done him wrong. This is a story which catches hold of you and refuses to let go. It forces you to watch, to bear witness, just as Rebecca does, and leaves you too engrossed to ever think about looking away. It’s brilliant.

Rebecca is a character who it is very easy to like. She has been readily accepted into her community, is fiercely loyal to her family and ultimately seems to be a very kind person. As you read through the book, you get a real feeling of her as a person, from the young woman lost in the grief of losing her mother, to the more confident person we see as she strives to stay one step ahead of Solomon. A lot of the story is given to describing her relationship with him, how he came to look after her when her mother first dies, but how that once loving relationship began to turn sour and be dominated by a wholly manipulative character. But it is easy to underestimate her strength of character, something she really needed in order to be able to escape from such an abusive relationship. That said, there was always that underlying doubt there. Something about Rebecca which made me question her character, if only her willingness to allow Solomon to just exact his revenge against her friends and family. What kind of person would just sit back like that?

Part of the answer to that question lies in Caroline Mitchell’s chilling portrayal of Solomon. He is a master manipulator, a bully. An abusive man who knows nothing other than getting his own way. It does not become clear until very late in the book the true extent of his controlling nature and his pattern of abuse against Rebecca, but from the clinical way in which he approaches his revenge, the clear sociopathic tendencies he displays, he is a man designed to make your skin crawl. And that he does. Mitchell has written him so perfectly that you are bound to feel a shiver down your spine every time you venture inside his sick and twisted mind.

The tension is almost palpable, the threat constant. From each ominous buzz of the mobile phone, I was poised and waiting, wondering what the next crime would be and who the intended victim? Could Rebecca really allow innocents to take her punishment? Would she be so callous as to deliberately direct Solomon to another, seemingly random person, someone for whom she had no real feelings? Well … you’ll have to read to find out, but some of the attacks are truly shocking and the story raced on at a such a pace to a final dramatic showdown between Solomon and Rebecca. Caroline Mitchell skilfully created such a tense feeling of jeopardy for Rebecca, but right up until the final confrontation, I still wasn’t sure quite what I expected, or even wanted, to happen. Yes, Rebecca has been under undue pressure, acting under duress, but still. No one is entirely blameless. And yes. The ending may well leave you reeling.

A brilliantly tense psychological thriller with a truly sick and twisted antagonist. I loved it. If this is a just the first taste of Ms Mitchell’s darker writing mind, I say turn out the lights and let’s mosey on over to the dark side.
