4.2 out of 5 stars 12 ratings

Gold Medal Winner - Best Regional Fiction (Canada West) - 2018 Independent Publisher Book Awards.

When National Park Warden Ben Matthews transfers from Cape Breton Highlands to Wood Buffalo, he finds himself in the middle of a controversial proposal to slaughter the park’s entire bison population. Frustrated by Park’s bureaucracy and the devious efforts of the pro-slaughter camp, Ben helps uncover the truth about the park’s bison and the mysterious disappearance of a trapper who could influence the final outcome.

Set in Canada’s largest national park and the second largest national park in the world, Wood Buffalo is a compelling story of one fight against the many forces threatening our special places.

I am privileged to have won a kindle copy of this book, for review, through Goodreads.
Set in the Canadian Park system, this tale of conservation and wildlife issues is a great read. The mystery starts with the disappearance of a local Cree nation man within the park. The developers are not unlike the wolves that inhabit the park and a possible Wood Buffalo milk is on the agenda. In Canadian backcountry, Ottawa political climate is as dangerous as a freak snowstorm. This is a well-informed, smart and fast paced mystery. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in wild life, adventure stories and factually informed fiction. I really enjoyed this book.

I enjoyed the first in the series, and I just finished the sequel. I am looking forward to the 3rd!

This is the first book I read in Mr. Mercer's series. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was born near the Wood Buffalo area, so I was familiar with many of the places mentioned in this book. I then purchased the other two books in this series, and enjoyed them very much as well. I look forward to reading future books he may write!
