Whispers of Shadow & Flame: Earthsinger Chronicles, Book Two Kindle Edition
The Mantle that separates the kingdoms of Elsira and Lagrimar is about to fall. And life will drastically change for both kingdoms.
Born with a deadly magic she cannot control, Kyara is forced to become an assassin. Known as the Poison Flame in the kingdom of Lagrimar, she is notorious and lethal, but secretly seeks freedom from both her untamed power and the blood spell that commands her. She is tasked with capturing the legendary rebel called the Shadowfox, but everything changes when she learns her target’s true identity.
Darvyn ol-Tahlyro may be the most powerful Earthsinger in generations, but guilt over those he couldn’t save tortures him daily. He isn’t sure he can trust the mysterious young woman who claims to need his help, but when he discovers Kyara can unlock the secrets of his past, he can’t stay away.
Kyara and Darvyn grapple with betrayal, old promises, and older prophecies—all while trying to stop a war. And when a new threat emerges, they must beat the odds to save both kingdoms.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2023This book was really good. L. Penelope's writing style is very nice. The boom is set before the ending of the first book and refers to what happens in the first book as well. It has one spicy scene but it's well written.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2020If you thought the last book was dark it had nothing on this one. So much sadness and suffering. A very bleak view of humanity but with enough hope to keep reading. This is a powerful story and I am fully hooked. I can’t wait for more from this author!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2024This book contains lots of action and kept me guessing about what would happen next.
However, I wasn't thrilled with The Book of Unveiling intros to every chapter. They distracted me and, in my opinion, didn't add anything to the plot. Although the book's ending ties up some storylines, it leaves too many questions unanswered.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2020A great follow up to Song of Stone and Blood. Penelope’s world-building and characters had me right from the start. Looking forward to reading the rest of this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2019I wanted to love this book so much, maybe too much... But after book one that I really liked and found intriguing, this one had dragged the whole time and I couldn't get into the characters at All. I felt like separate things would work for me, but altogether it was not working for me in this book.
I hope that the next book will be able to hold everything that is going on better, as the premise, ideas and characters are something that makes this story really intriguing in that genre. I will read the next one for sure.
This book is a proper YA, besides once scene that would easily go to NA book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2020Very enjoyable book series by a talented and kind author! I can’t wait for the next one.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2020I can't wait for the 3rd book to come out.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2022This book was the hardest to read in the series; I almost stopped halfway through even though I loved the first book. It is comparatively bleak and despairing. The desert setting, torture, oppression, it’s all very hard to get through for a dragons-and-princesses fantasy reader like me. But I hung in and it started to turn around by the end of the book. The next two are just as amazing as the first and the end of the series was hugely satisfying without feeling like fan service or a pat happily ever after. The way this world expands book by book is very intentional and adds depth without overwhelming the reader. Hang in there and the first part of this book will totally pay off later in the series!
