When We Were Dancing (The Wolf of Oberhame Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 1,514 ratings

Nobility doesn't marry for love. That means she needs to get creative.

They call her the Gladiator Queen. Leyli might be the first female heir to the throne, but she never wanted this - yet her cousin's scheming leaves no other option. Now, she'll do whatever it takes to make sure he can't wreak any more havoc for the country her family fought so hard to keep safe.

On the sands of the arena, the threats were honest. Men fought for their lives and nothing else. In the palace, everything is different. The danger is veiled in fancy clothes and whispered rumors. Spies lie in wait around every corner, bribed with promises of power and wealth. Once, she thought this was normal. No longer. The pampered princess has become a fighter.

To win this game, she has to keep her cousin far from succession. The best way is an heir of her own. She needs a noble husband who won't kill her in her sleep and -- hopefully -- one who will ignore the hulking shadow of her best friend turned bodyguard. But will society turn her most trusted friend into a weapon to be used against her?

The game is called King of the Hill. The music for their dance is made of politics. Fate may have given her a second chance, but he's a fickle god. For each thing he gives, he takes something else away. These may not be the sands of the arena, but she's still fighting.

The Wolf can't afford to lose.

I absolutely love this story, i love how they worked out the crown situation. I'm excited to what is next and also see Death in the future coming in to work with Wolf.

I've come to this series after enjoying the author's more recent work. It's a good example of her style, with evolutions between then and now. Thus far, it's not as openly sexual as later work, but still deliciously sensual. As much as I appreciate smut (and boy howdy, do I) I like this as it's more plot and character development.

Strong women, strong men, and people forming their own families are still keystones of the book. The world building is enough to happily fall into it, though some things seem to work far too reasily and much of the plot is easy to see coming a mile away.

"You're anything but common. You're the Lion, and Lions are kings. To me, it doesn't matter if your birth is screamed from the rooftops like mine, or celebrated quietly like yours. We're all just people, and you happen to be the best one I know."

I was torn between 4 and 5 stars, but went with 5 despite some of the obvious plot points as I'd happily reread this series. Looking forward to book 3.

I have Book One a 5 Star rating, which I rarely give any book. The story of a kidnapped Princess who was sold to the Gladiator arena was an absolutely riveting read for me. This second book takes place after the Princess was rescued, and concentrates more on the nuances and political games of the Royal Court. Which was quite interesting--but naturally not as exciting as the life and death brutality of the Gladiator Games. There were also more proofreading errors...or maybe I simply noticed them more because I wasn't racing through the book as quickly.

The romance between the Princess and her Gladiator heated up in this second book. The secrets build and the danger is still very real. The World building was more informative. The ending of this installment, like the first book, ends with some satisfaction without leaving the reader frustrated. But I'm very involved in this series, so I have already downloaded the third and final book. I'm just not able to stop---it's that good.

I couldn’t stop reading this book even though I was up all night! It was worth it. I found this trilogy and was wondering if worth my time. So I was reading various reviews on the three books. Seemed like everyone loved the first book but second book seemed to only getting so-so reviews. I decided to skim thru second book first. Started and couldn’t stop. Have since, ended up reading third book. Still haven’t read first one. Awesome.
In this second book, I was still able to see how her time in arena made her ready to be a great queen. How she embraced all that she had learned and applied it to life and death strategy necessary of Royal court life. I loved how she embraced all gladiators who had become close friends, knowing they would watch her back to the death - literally. Loved how she slowly began to change her country laws to help those in the system. Loved her choice for Royal Consort. What a power couple they will make. Loved the arena battle where her evil cousin tries to take over the throne. That section has some very exciting and satisfying resolutions. Loved the scene when Queen goes to put the fear of consequences into the woman, that had the Lion King originally thrown into the debtor prison. Very satisfying book. Looks like war is on the horizon for the third book with neighboring country.

I’ve never been a fan of the soft storylines. The darkness always gives a good character depth, and Leyli is no exception. I have genuinely loved how this storyline has unfolded, and I’m excitedly scurrying to read the third. Bravo on yet another awesome series!

I have really enjoyed reading more about Leyli and Tristan.... The wolf and lion of Oberhame. I have enjoyed their crazy mixed up family and friends relationships. I love that they are trying to change laws for the betterment of their country. Quite a lot of love going around but also threats to kill. 2 nd book in the series and a continuation from book 1. Although it does not end in a cliffhanger, there is more to the story. It's a very unique love story, but it works and they have strong bonds with the goal of making things better for everyone. I'm completely enjoying this story.

This is part 2, however it can easily be read on its own. The princess is now heir to the throne after being saved from the gladiator ring. Her bodyguard and former fighting partner will do whatever it takes to keep her safe. Their attraction grows but the difference in their stations make it tough. Until they come up with an unconventional plan.

I read some of Auryn's other work before this (Rise of the Illiri being one series) and I truly regret taking my time to read this series. I am fascinated by the worlds that she builds and her believable characters. She quite possibly is my favourite author of the RH genre (although this is not RH) and this series has plenty of romance, swashbuckling and the aforementioned world building to keep me a very happy reader.

If you enjoy a good romance, with strong characters and an epic storyline please one-click now. You will not regret it.
