    Sawyer Bennett has such a way with gut-wrenching emotion! With her latest novella, Bennett brings her A game and leads her Arizona Vengeance fans through a bittersweet ending in RAFE. With a heavy heart, we accompany Rafe home to North Carolina to have that most important time with his father, and watch as an emotional reunion with his first and only love unravel. It was short, but satisfying ... in particular if you had read the previous book in the series that set up why he was leaving and the emotions of the team in letting him go.

    Rafe Simmons is so easy to love. He had our heart from the second he put his success to the wayside and made his way home no matter what, but to watch him reconnect with his one true love was really sweet.

    Calliope Ramirez was easy to like. Since this was a novella, we didn't have the depth of getting her back story since Rafe left her to a great degree, but we got a good feel for the type of person she has become and the emotions she felt as he re-entered her life.

    I highly recommend this novella as well as the entire two hockey series that this book spans (Arizona Vengeance and Carolina Cold Fury) to anyone who enjoys an emotional and action packed hockey romance with compelling characters and story lines.

    Rafe's story is a great second chance romance that is heavy on emotion. His homecoming is bittersweet at best as he has to balance the learning curve of playing on a new team, figuring out how to say goodbye to his dad while supporting his mom, and navigating shark-infested waters when it comes to reconnecting with his first - and only- love.

    Decisions made with the best intentions can still haunt you for years to come, and Rafe learned that lesson the hard way when he made the choice to leave the girl he loved behind in his hometown to pursue his career. Calliope has always been the one who got away for him, but he never realized how very badly he hurt her when he left. Now she is the one person who can help him cope with the loss he is about to face, but she looks like she would rather knee him than speak to him when they come face to face for the first time again.

    It doesn't take long before old feelings rise to the surface again, and once she hears his explanation for leaving the way he did, she has to decide if holding onto the anger and hurt is the path she wants to walk. Their chemistry is still off the charts, and once she decides to try for friends with benefits, she quickly learns that age and maturity only improves the experience. Protecting her heart may be in her best interests but Rafe isn't giving up without a fight particularly being faced with the perfect of example of life being too short.

    I was upset to see his trade go down in Dominik's book, but I love this story for him. The heartbreak is offset by the joy of reconnecting with the girl who should have been his for the last 8 years, and the camaraderie of both the Vengeance and Cold Fury players supporting him adds a heartwarming element to a highly enjoyable addition to the author's hockey universe.

    Rafe and Calliope were teen sweethearts until he makes the decision to move on without her when his hockey career takes off. I’m with her, why does he get to make that decision without talking to her. I spent most of the book mad at him on her behalf.

    I liked how the book explored the grief of losing someone you love and the reality of it. I hurt for Rafe, but I found most of his actions to be selfish and self serving. Calliope was for sure too good for him.

    Her books are always well written, so most should enjoy this short story.

    Such an emotional rollercoaster for Rafe. So, so happy that Calliope have him a chance to prove himself and get their happy ever after but what the poor guy went through was truly heartbreaking.
    A wonderful book but you will most definitely need the tissues....I did.

    So very emotionally packed. This book definitely had the tears flowing as Rafe struggles with his Dad’s impending death. It also had me swooning as he fell head over heels back in love with Calliope is ex girlfriend & best friend. As he gets situated with his new team after being traded to his home town team to be close to his dad, he struggles with how to let his dad go & how to prove to Calliope that he’s still in love with her & in it for the long haul. This book was beautiful. Definitely recommend.
