CHRISTMAS 1917

Carrie is so grateful that she can call 99 Nightingale Lane home. Christmas promises to be one to cherish with her dear friends around her and the first one her son, John will remember, but a cloud hangs over her happiness.

Arnold Bateman, Carrie's estranged husband is back in Whitechapel. He has made it clear to Carrie that he wants her back, not to be a husband to her, but simply for what she now owns. Unknown to Carrie he has visited the house on many occasions to persuade her but has received constant rebuttals from Ida Coyle, Carrie's loyal cook. When Arnold arrives unannounced on Christmas Eve demanding to be given admittance to the house Carrie is devastated, wondering how she can prevent him from taking what he insists the law says is his. The Belgian refugees, Joshka, Gregor and Asher prevent him from entering, but as he falls into a snow-filled gutter after an altercation with Joshka, he promises Carrie she will lose everything, including her beloved son...and he'll make sure of it.

Follow Carrie's story in this riveting full-length novel of CHRISTMAS AT 99 NIGHTINGALE LANE.

What readers are saying about 99 Nightingale Lane...What a gorgeous story. The writing is beautiful and the storytelling is lyrical. I was captured from page one. When I read a book it's all about the characters, and 99 Nightingale Lane has multi-dimensional characters that will stay with you long after you've read the last page. I rooted for them and I cried with them. I was absolutely captivated by the heroine. She's strong and brave despite every reason not to be. The author takes you from the drawing rooms in London to the teeming streets of Bombay. The writing is so deliciously descriptive I was transported. If you love stories about women who overcome odds, and if you're looking for the next book to take you away - this is the one. Amazon Reviewer
I loved the Dickensian tone to this page-turning story of romance and tragedy in India, an historical novel depicting class, race, and betrayal. Carrie Dobbs is a heroine from whom the reader can learn about resilience, grit and forgiveness. Highly recommend!

I loved this book so much! It kept my interest so much that I hated to put it down to sleep. The way you mingled the characters throughout was wonderful.

I'm enjoying these books more than I thought I would, however, this one ... There's more action and drama, which I appreciate, but I'm confused about Pearl. Did I miss the moment when Pearl discovered she could walk again? She went from wheelchair to standing/walking with no mention of the fact??

I liked the book but would not have read it had I known books had come before and this one was "to be continued"
  • Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2022
I will continue to read this series for now but the whole book numbering thing is confusing. I think I have figured out there are 8 books plus Mrs. Coyle's Cookbook/Story but either Amazon or the Author has made a mess of the book numbers & therefore order.

    Sorry spoilers below.

But the biggest editing error so far is a big section of Book 5 must be missing or the author is extremely lazy & disrespectful to her readers... When was Pearl cured? She was in the wheelchair on one page & then she was walking a few pages later - NO explanation! Her injury & recovery were a big part of the story. Also they barely mentioned her & Tommy's premature baby Eliza after she is born - just some trips to visit her & hope she comes home soon - again very lazy or poor editing.

I think the author had too many stories happening at the same time.

Because of this mess she made, I lost the emotional connection to the characters. Didn't care when David finally came back home to Carrie & his magical alibi for Tommy was again lazy & also unimaginative.

I will try the next book in the series, either 1918 (#6 or #7 pending on where you look) or Mrs. Coyle's Cookbook/Story. The author mentions that Mrs. C's book is the preferred one to read next.

If the editing does not get better, I will quit the series.

i couldn't wait for book five ,as soon as i received it iread it.I wasn't dissapointed and enjoyed every page of it .It seemed like tying all the loose ends up from the previous books, but every thing made sense. In my own mind i think there could be another book and chapter,i certainly hope so.The whole 5 books were very well described and i imagined myself back in india.Which in my mind when you are living the part in the story ,i find that sign of a good author.Would highly recommend it and a very enjoyable read.
