The praised author of Warrior Blue takes a step in a different direction with this haunting and mysterious romantic suspense.

After an ugly divorce, Inspector Alec Brodie returns home to the sleepy town of Fort Crow, Scotland, where crime is about as common as a sunny day. Before long, he begins to wonder if his career as a homicide detective has come to an end.

But things take an unexpected turn when the body of a beautiful tourist is found. Alec is eager to jump on the case, until the suspicious death is ruled an accident. Now, the number one question on his mind is, who is covering up the murder of Rosie Allan?

With the help of his best friend, along with a very unlikely—and very gorgeous—partner, Alec sets out to find some answers. But can he solve the mystery without getting himself killed—or worse, falling in love?

“For of all sad words of toņgue or pen, The saddest are these: 'It might have been!'" This is a line from Whittier's poem, Maude Miller. This romantic suspense is laden with many might have beens, and it gave me pause to consider a few past events from my own life in a different light.

Rosie Allan has always wanted to go to Scotland, but never under these circumstances. She and her teen-age son are traveling there to retrieve Rosie's sister's remains, who dıed after falling off a cliff. That's the story the Scottish inspector gave her over the phone, anyway.

Alec Brody spent time in the city but has returned to the small town of Fort Crow and again taken a job with the town's police force so he can be close to his aıling father. When he finds the case of Gracie Allan has been ruled an accident, many things don’t add up, and Alec doesn’t know who to trust. After meeting a grıeving Rosie and her son, Alec is committed to finding out the truth about Gracie's death.

One of the things I love about this truly gifted storyteller is her desire to continually improve in her craft and step outside the box. And her ability and willingness to dig far into personal experiences and leave pieces of her soul within her poetic prose is nothing short of stunning. She has a way of reaching into a reader's heart and wrınging every last bit of emotion from it.

This book is quite a departure from her typical romances, but the drama and mystery only add to the emotional component. She drew me so effortlessly into this one that I felt like a secondary character immersed in the story as an observer. It was all I could do to haņg on for dear life as I flew through these pages in one sitting.

I’m not sure exactly which genre this fits into, but if you like romantic suspense that's so much more, you'll love this riveting, hypnotic, extraordinary read!

Kelsey stepped out of her comfort zone with this one and did a fantastic job. I am not a crime/drama/murder/mystery type of reader, but I read this because I have loved most of Kelsey's other books. I enjoyed the characters, and the setting. The plot was very well thought out and kept me guessing up until the end. I hope she writes more books with these characters because Alec and Rosie are just getting started.

I was happy to hear that Kelsey Kingsley was writing a romantic suspense. She always has complexed, flawed characters that you grow to love throughout her stories. Rosie and Alec were no exception.
I could vividly see the opening scenes in the book as they would play out in any criminal drama. I was curious as to how Alec and Rosie would come to be solving the crime together. It was an interesting twist that relied on the characters leaning on intuition to trust each other. I do not want to give any of the plot away. So, I will say that I was satisfied that murder investigation was unique. And Rosie and Alec both portrayed very real ways that individuals response to traumas.
Rosie is a single mom but still close to her ex-husband/child's father. Alec is a investigator that has been beat down by life and is really just going through the motions until Gracie's death. Rosie and Alec both learn a lot about life and living in this book and I am keen to see where their story will go.

I’m a long time Kelsey Kingsley fan. I’ve read ALL her books. I love how she continues to evolve as a writer. A Circle of Crows, her latest work, and the first in what I hope is a series revolving around these characters, is one of her best works to date.

No spoilers here, but I’m going to assure you that Alec Brodie is her most complicated hero to date, and that’s why you’re doing to love him. He’s flawed, so human with such a magnificent heart. Add in our heroine, Rosie, and you’ll be just as enamored with her. All the characters in this book are well developed - I wish they were real people I could hang out with! I loved how we see characters from Kelsey’s other works pop in (hello McKinneys!), so I can’t wait to see how these worlds combine in future work. PLEASE let there be a conversation between Alec and Sebastian!

The story is complex and layered, and you won’t see the resolution coming. I was hooked from the first page! Pick this one up and get lost in this world. You won’t regret it!

IMO Ms. Kingsley is more of an abstract spiritual writer, rather than an author we should take literally. Clearly this book was written as she's grieving the loss of her brother, as the themes of remembrance and regrets recur often during the course of the story. For that reason I read the mystery portion of the story with much latitude and forgiveness for plot holes and unanswered questions. Despite these the story was compelling. I loved the characters and the slowly developing romance between two people whose spirits were crushed but discover that they need each other to feel alive again. It's somewhat implied that there is destiny in their relationship.

My advice is to not focus on the details of this story, but suspend your disbelief and read it with the overall themes in mind—grieving a loss and coming to acceptance. With that approach you'll take a meaningful journey with these very sympathetic characters.

Thank you to the author for the ARC. This is my honest review.

So unlike a typical Kelsey Kingsley book (which I always love) but sooo good. I thought I had predicted the ending but the twist surprised me. I loved the relationships in the book, they were real with honest emotions. The descriptions of missing a loved one were honest and real life. Trying so hard to remember a voice, or a moment in time, and having it slip away is heartbreaking and frustrating at the same time. If you like a bit of romance and a bit of mystery pick up this book! I also enjoyed the appearance of characters from her other books!

This book is not your typical novel from this amazing author. This is a murder mystery. Oh, there is romance, a super hot Scottish detective, shenanigans, laughs, and tears, but there is also a murder to solve. The story moves at a good pace, the twists and turns are unpredictable and it nicely keeps you on the edge of your seat. Be warned though, you will cry. The raw emotion drawn from the pages is real, true and healing. Highly recommend and am super excited to see a sequel, spin-off, or just another mention of these characters in a future book.

Kelsey Kinglsley you outdid yourself. There are no words for the excellent writing skills. This story is everything. There is love there is fear there is soul ripping sadness and then there is joy. Everything anyone would ever want in a book is here in the Circle of Crows. To say I loved it is an understatement. I truly loved every single word in it! You are amazing Lady!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Outlander has a lot to answer for.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 18, 2021
I have read other books by this writer and I don’t think murder-mystery is her natural genre. From the outset, the characters behave in an absolutely infuriating and completely unrealistic manner, in my opinion (rather like in Outlander actually now that I come to think of it). But hey, it’s fiction set in Scotland and North Americans will probably lap it up. Good luck with it in any case, but it’s not my cup of tea. If you get a kick out of wanting to shout at the protagonists, you may love it.
