I've read most of the Gentlemen and Rogues series, and now this Regency Romance story. Ms. Leech's writing gets better and better with each book, and is one of the few Regency romance writers I look forward to reading. She creates vivid characters and the stories are well crafted, not just the predictable, formulaic slop so often seen in the genre. And even though you know the HEA is coming, it's still fun to see how it works out.

I really enjoyed the story and the characters. This was a great mix of mystery and romance set in the Regency period. I was a little annoyed by the archaic language sprinkled into the story - sometimes I would pause and have to figure out what the words meant using the context, and sometimes I thought words were missing, only to discover it was part of giving the dialogue "flavor." On the other hand, it was not as annoying as the overly modern language you sometimes find in historical fiction.

That being said, I would definitely recommend it! I like romance stories, but sometimes it's nice to have a story where there is more going on than just two people falling in love.

I want to give the author extra kudos for knowing how to correctly use the words nauseating and nauseated. Too many authors don't understand the significant difference between nauseated (being sick to your stomach) and nauseous (something that causes people to feel nauseated). Okay, that's my pet peeve, but still - there's a big difference between those two words.

I would caution the author that "alright" is not a word. It should always be "all right".

I just bought book 1 of this series, and I'm excited to read it!

The story has several twists and turns which makes for an interesting read. Some characters have extreme personalities but they were believable. In the end, the fate and future of each were explained well, except for the detective who really wasn’t any good as he was painted to be. And it was very disappointing that Harry and Clara, after a long time of keeping their relationship chaste, had to give in the night before the wedding. To make it worse, it was inserted into the story just for the heck of it. It was unnecessary and ruined the ending for me.

Liked the story and plot except for the long suffering hero. His struggles and past mistakes made for an indecisive man. Tired of his angst. The heroine was more interesting than he. Minimal romantic episodes. Happy ending though.

Loved the book and the surprise twist. Harry runs away after being abused his whole life by his uncle but at 19 in accidentally kills his uncle and runs again. Cool and hungry Harry doesn’t know what to do but when he rescues Lord Preston he is given a place to sleep and food. Lord Preston is stubborn, alone and takes Harry under his wing. When he meets Squire Bows daughter Clarinda he sees nothing but a spoiled little girl. 8 years later they meet again but she’s not a little girl anymore. Clarinda is determined that Harry will be hers since she has been in love with him since she saw him. When Lord Preston’s Family verges on him only for his title and fortune Harry is determined to protect him. But when Lord Preston dies everyone is shocked with the outcome of the WILL! When bodies start to drop Clarinda is determined to protect Harry at all costs. A great read with a surprise ending!

In exchange for hearing this story on audio for free I was asked for an honest opinion when writing my review.
What can I say...the novel was absolutely marvellous and a joy to hear. I listened to this story whilst on my long walks and I couldn’t help smiling while listening to it. I’m sure fellow walkers found me quite odd walking about with a cheeser (smile) on my face but that’s what Emma’s novels do to you, make you smile.
Harry’s story from start to finish was moving, sad, exciting and happy at the same time. I enjoyed the fact that it was his story from start to finish and I felt like I was walking with him on his journey through life. The way he dealt with different characters and the hardships that came into his life with charm and humbleness made you root for him even more. A true handsome hero in my opinion.
I’m not going to write about the content of this book because I urge you to read this amazing novel and find out the story for yourself. All I will say is buckle up and be ready with those cheesers because they’ll be coming through thick and fast when you start reading this delightful novel.

What's not to love about a young man trying his best to make a life for himself, hardly daring to think himself good enough for what he truly wants? I loved the way Ms Leech actually wrote this book from Harry's point of view, allowing a new look into regency without having to wade through the ribbons and pins of a lady fighting for her independence. The intrigue and mystery all added to the allure of this novel!

4.0 out of 5 stars Well done murder mystery

I've read and enjoyed most of the Rogues & Gentlemen series so did not hesitate to download this. A different twist on the story of greedy "relatives" fighting over an inheritance that turns into a murder mystery. You can't help liking Harry.. Nicely spun tale with slang from 1811 starting each chapter!

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing and suspenseful romance
Reviewed in Canada on December 29, 2020
This was a wonderful story by Emma Leech full of mystery and suspense. The romance was a little on the light side since there was plenty going on with the other characters. For the most part this was a solid read but it did drag on in the middle. I would have loved to see more development of the romance between Clara and Harry. Definitely entertaining.
