A sumptuous novel based on the fascinating true story of La Belle Époque icon Lucy, Lady Duff Gordon, who shattered the boundaries of fashion with her magnificently sensual and enchantingly unique design from the USA Today bestselling author of In Royal Service to the Queen.

Lucy Duff Gordon knows she is talented. She sees color, light, and texture in ways few people can begin to imagine. But is the male dominated world of haute couture, who would use her art for their own gain, ready for her?

When she is deserted by her wealthy husband, Lucy is left penniless with an aging mother and her five-year-old daughter to support. Desperate to survive, Lucy turns to her one true talent to make a living. As a little girl, the dresses she made for her dolls were the envy of her group of playmates. Now, she uses her creative designs and her remarkable eye for color to take her place in the fashion world—failure is not an option.

Then, on a frigid night in 1912, Lucy’s life changes once more, when she becomes one of 706 people to survive the sinking of the Titanic. She could never have imagined the effects the disaster would have on her fashion label Lucile, her marriage to her second husband, and her legacy. But no matter what life throws at her, Lucy will live on as a trailblazing and innovative fashion icon, never letting go of what she worked so hard to earn. This is her story.

Review

A Dress of Violet Taffeta is a vivid and detailed portrait of the life of the legendary Lucy Duff Gordon. Tessa Arlen has crafted a transporting and beautiful homage to Lucy Duff Gordon’s creativity, perseverance, and influence on the fashion industry.”—Chanel Cleeton, New York Times & USA Today Bestselling Author of Our Last Days in Barcelona

"Tessa Arlen delivers a fascinating tale based on the real-life fashion icon, Lucy, Lady Duff-Gordon, who went up against a male dominated industry and revolutionized it. Her daring designs were worn by royals, aristocrats, and the celebrities of her day.  Be prepared to Google your way through this captivating novel, filled with its glorious ensemble cast of characters. Rich and atmospheric, Arlen’s descriptions of haute couture are simply breathtaking. A must read for fashion fans everywhere."—Renee Rosen,
USA Today bestselling author of The Social Graces

“Tessa Arlen's novel is as elegant as a Lucille gown, full of movement, color and beauty. It brings to life some of the most important and fascinating people and events of her generation, from Nijinsky to the Titanic.  For anyone interested in fashion, in the Gilded Age, in stories about strong, visionary woman, Tessa Arlen's novel is a must read!”—Jeanne Mackin, author of
The Last Collection

A Dress Of Violet Taffeta is the epic story of a self-made woman, and a fresh and captivating look at the birth of fin de siècle runway fashion. From cramped terraced house sitting rooms to ballrooms, readers will be enthralled by the parade of notable historical figures whose appetite for clothing allows a single mother to not only raise her daughter, but to do so in growing comfort, style, and notoriety. Arlen doesn’t shy away from hardships and tragedy, but with a bright, hopeful, industrious protagonist like Lucy Duff Gordon at the forefront, the reader is never burdened.  A true pleasure from start to finish.”—Erika Robuck, national bestselling author of Sisters Of Night And Fog

“A sumptuous treat of elegant prose, evocative descriptions, and compelling emotions. Arlen’s writing absolutely shines in A Dress of Violet Taffeta. She succeeds in making fashion designer and Titanic-survivor Lucy Duff Gordon both relatable and sympathetic, and stirs the senses with her lush depictions of clothing and settings.”—Anna lee Huber,
USA TODAY Bestselling author of A Perilous Perspective

From no one to the queen of trend…
🪡 A Dress of Violet Taffeta 🧵 ✒️ Tessa Arlen 🌟🌟🌟🌟 I am a romance reader, I go out of my reading range quite rarely, yet this book’s cover and blurb caught my eyes, so I told myself why not try a biographical historical fiction, the subject a successful woman in the early XXth century. The story opens on the aftermath of the event that upended the heroine’s life, the end of her marriage, leading to her need to provide for herself and her daughter. As a rewriting of the life of Lady Duff Gordon, it offers a linear progress of her rising with glimpses of her private life. This is this part I would have liked to be more explored. I loved reading about this or that real character, the creative process of her collections, after googling a bit of the protagonists named along the path, I discovered talent was a sisterhood thing as her sister too was successful with her writings. As for Celia, inspired to the author by two women who were important in Lady Duff Gordon’s success story, as a fictional character I would have liked for her to reach her own arc instead of being a faire-valoir or sidekick for her employer. She is two more eyes to explore Lucy’s life with its ups and downs but her own existence stays in the shadows, only relying her boss turned friend’s achievements, with no real moment for herself. The romance between Lucy and her second husband was very underdeveloped to my taste, sadly not much explored, but the romance reader I am is quite happy with the author’s choice for her selected end of the narrative. In some way I got my happy ending. In all, it is an interesting foray in the fashion world at the turn of the XXth century with the rising of women and the battles they won to get more rights. 4 stars On a special note, I would have loved to see some pictures of Lady Lucy’s creations. And I wonder about the accuracy of the gown shown on the cover, from the back it looks more regency than Belle Epoque. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 kisses, behind closed doors love scenes. I have been granted an advance copy by the publisher, here is my true and unbiased opinion.

I first met Lady Duff Gordon at The Titanic Museum in Branson, MO., where a woman was playing the roll of this talented designer, as she told her story and interacted with tourists. My niece was wearing an off the shoulder top when the actress singled her out and said “You know, I created that look. I was the first to design the off shoulder style.“ She never broke character and I was hooked. I wanted to know more about Lady Duff Gordon.

I was thrilled to find this book by Tessa Arles. The story tells the life of Lucile Sutherland who married James Wallace when she was 18 years old. Nothing about about her marriage to this womanizing, hard drinking, gambling man pleased her. And when he ran off with a “gaiety girl”, Lucy divorced him. A shocking move in the 1800s. How was she going to support herself, her young daughter, and her long suffering mother who lived with her.

But Lucy had a dream. And, support them, she did. Lucy designed and made beautiful dresses. She could see and feel colors and with the beautiful flowing fabrics she purchased, as well as her astute business sense and marketing plans, she and her former scullery maid Celia , who became her assistant and friend,
    transformed the fashion world.

I am glad I read this book. I found it to be a gentle read with fabrics, color, and design playing a lead roll. As she designed for the aristocratic society women in England and later incorporated wealthy “new money” clients from America, Lucy was successful in spite of running a business and being a divorced woman - qualities not appreciated in a women during the late 1800 to early 1900s in England.

At times, the book dragged for me. I did enjoy all the name-dropping as her wealthy clients sought her out for her designs and her fashion forward clothing. I enjoyed the love story between Duff Gordon and Lucy. I knew she was a survivor from the “unsinkable” Titanic tragedy.

When the ship hit the iceberg, the tone of Arles’ writing shifted to fast paced, descriptive terror as the next two chapters flew by. The writing and story line of the rest of the book resumed its gentle pace and the ending was satisfying. As most historical fiction authors use some literary license, the author’s notes should be read.

Three stars because at times I got a little overwhelmed with the many fashion descriptions, yet I know they also enhanced the story of Lady Duff Gordon , the woman who got us out of our corsets and changed the world of fashion.

Lucy is a strong woman who divorces her abusive husband after he abandons her and her child leaving them virtually penniless. Lucy harnesses her sewing talent and eye for colors and textures to create a beautiful dress to wear to an event that her sister is hosting. Her dress is a hit and she begins to design for clients that are part of London aristocracy. Lucy’s business flourishes and grows with the help of her close assistant and confident, Celia. This book, of course, will be engaging for those seeking a novel about women overcoming obstacles. There is detailed descriptions throughout the book of fashion design, fabrics, lace, color and stitching. This will resonate with those who have interest but perhaps not so much for others. Although a tragedy, I enjoyed the author’s detailed description of the Titanic accident, the decisions that were made, survivors guilt and the inquest following. The author puts you in the scene with the characters whether in the sea or in the design salon. Her rich characters and atmospheric surroundings fully engage you in the novel.

I had never heard of Lucile, Lady Duff Gordon but I read the book because I am a fan of Tessa Arlen’s writing. This is a very intriguing book about the life of a remarkable woman who dared to go against the conventions of the times by becoming a business woman, a dress designer and maker. She was smart and talented and she didn’t care what others thought about her. She became a worldwide success but not without many problems and heartaches. She certainly didn’t have a charmed life but she never lost her positive outlook. The ending of the book left me wanting to know even more about this remarkable lady and her family. I did an internet search and was very surprised by the way her life and the life of her family transitioned in the years that followed WWI and on. Ms. Arlen has done another great job with this book about a person that made a great impact on the world of fashion but so little was known. I would highly recommend it.

I have always been interested in the real-life main character, Lucy, so was really looking forward to this book. Despite the author being British (she was born in Singapore, where her father was a British diplomat) because she has lived in the US since the 80s her spelling is American (‘favor’; ‘gray’) which is a bit discombobulating when first encountered, given the background of the story and the characters (I prefer as much authenticity as possible, otherwise I find it distracts me from the plot). For example, I was compelled to check when ‘to get a grip’ had first been used, as I thought it was a modern US expression, but good to know it was already in use in Britain in the 19th century. However, I am still at the beginning of the book, so will persevere. So far, so interesting.
