A Faerie's Touch: A midlife paranormal mystery thriller (Memory Guild Book 7) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 517 ratings

I’ve really stepped in it this time.

They say if you accept a gift from the Fae, you’ll forever be in debt to them. And they always collect on their debts. I wish someone had told me this before a faerie gave me an enchanted pearl.

It comes at an awkward time, because the supernatural guilds of San Marcos are preparing for an invasion by the Fae, who want to restore their primacy over humans. And I’m trying to learn about my new powers and the responsibilities that come with them.

As if I don’t have enough on my plate, my first husband has been charged with the murder of his business partner. I agree to help exonerate him with my psychometry, which turns out to be a dangerous decision. There’s enough danger already, with the Fae unleashing a minotaur and other monsters in our quaint tourist city.

Do you think this will affect the bookings at my inn?

Get enchanted by an alluring world of magic, murder, mystery, and mischief.

What is the Memory Guild?

Of the supernatural guilds in the nation's oldest city, the Memory Guild's mission is to preserve, protect, and correct humankind's collective memory of history and the human experience. Its members have paranormal and supernatural abilities to help them carry out this mission.

Other Memory Guild Members:

  • Sage, a ghost who won't admit she's dead
  • Archibald, gargoyle, stone-speaker
  • Diego, 500-year-old vampire
  • Gloria, psychic and medium
  • Diana, astral witch
  • James, metal-speaker
  • Summer, wood-speaker
  • Laurel, psychometrist

The Memory Guild

Midlife paranormal mysteries and thrillers

My name is Darla and I'm a psychometrist. That means I can read other people's memories by touching objects they have touched. That's a dangerous ability to have when you live in 500-year-old city, run a 300-year-old bed-and-breakfast, and have a mother (a witch) who owns an antique shop. But it's why I was recruited to the Memory Guild, and it helps me investigate mysteries from the present and the past. Now, if I can only find out why my second husband disappeared. At 52, life has gotten wild.

  • Magic, monsters, and evil humans
  • Snark, sarcasm and satire
  • Cozy tropes, but also action, danger, scariness, and a touch of darkness
  • Clean
  • Romantic subplots, but romance is a minor element
  • Darla uses her psychometry and telepathy to help solve mysteries, but they are not magic bullets
  • Oh, and there's also the In Between, an alternate plane of existence
  • In the tradition of Paranormal Women's Fiction
The Memory Guild 9 books on ancient wall paranormal mystery thrillers

The Memory Guild mysteries are clever and fun. The series is a sparkling stand-out in an ocean full of sameness!
Parker’s humor keeps the story moving along and the inventive situations are exciting, I laughed out loud and worried about the characters at the same time.

I’m always surprised at each of Darla’s new “adventures” as she keeps taking chances, trying to find solutions to the newest upheavals taking place in San Marcos.

As if Darla didn't have enough to do with the inn and the threat of war with the the Fae, she is also being stalked by ancient mythological creatures. You know, like a minotaure or or a giant bat slash humanoid? Oh yeah, the she gets kidnapped and has to heal the Queen of the Fae. Will that affect the war between the Fae and other supernaturalus ?

Another interesting plot with this, the seventh book in the series. As much as I have enjoyed them, I am hoping the next one will bring it all to a conclusion.

I hope the next book goes back to being a good read but this one was just plain bad. Way too shallow and strung together by “oh I shouldn’t do this but I’m going to anyway”. Ugh

(I received this copy for the ARC group, so I got to read it early. Eat your hearts out.)

Darla has her hands full for a while. Now, instead of three rooms occupied by guests at the Esperanza Inn, she only has three vacant rooms. None of her guests has died recently, so things are looking up. She is glad to have her husband, Cory, back to help her with repairs; her daughter, Sophie, also helps with housekeeping duties.

Meanwhile, she is also the newest member of the Memory Guild of San Marcos, and has to attend to business for them as well.

Now an extra wrinkle is added. Darla's ex-husband Buddy, Sophie's father, has shown up asking for Darla's help getting him off a murder charge. Can Darla ignore his plea? Of course not!

Have I mentioned the Fae? No need. They'll introduce themselves.

This next book in the series was again a very fun read. I did miss our herione having a ghost mystery to solve which was in the previous reads. Outerwise the main mystery kept me reading to the end.
