When it comes to beating your business rivals, what better than deception?

Punches still count in these days of technological advancement. When Matt Hardwicke, owner of Winnibrook, employs his rival’s most ingenious researcher, he finds out that there are consequences. After a near fatal accident Matt leaves England, returning only when forced to. When he lodges at Jenny Bishop’s to keep under his enemy’s radar, he discovers that not only his employees, but also his family are in danger. With time running out, Matt has little choice but to become the main target.

Jenny lives with her grandparents; a quirky pair guarding an age-old secret. Little does she know that her world is about to be shattered. Forced to house her employer, the status of his temporary stay changes and Jenny’s nightmare begins.

Life seems determined to light the fuse between these two recluses. And it’s not long before the worms start crawling out of the woodwork.

From the first chapter Robyn Cain sets the tone for a story of corporate intrigue and cold blooded greed. With a fine hand, Cain weaves the characters lives together, carefully creating connections that are not always apparent at first glance. The most delightful of these characters are Jenny and Matt, poor employee and wealthy employer. The interaction between these two carries the story. Although they seem to develop a romantic relationship rather quickly, they are so charming it’s easily overlooked. The dialogue between the lovers is natural and very reminiscent of the film noir of the 40’s and 50’s. Readers outside of the UK might have some difficulty with the very British language but it also adds charisma to the characters.
Character laden, it is sometimes difficult to keep track of who is doing what to whom and for what purpose. Throughout the book the underlying stories are as interesting as the main plot so it is worth taking a little extra time for a second read of a previous chapter. A couple of the characters are left hanging at the end but they are just loose ends that are not vital to the story line.
All in all this is a good book with a nice love story complicated by a nasty bunch of bad guys.

A bald-headed psychopath returns to his neighborhood and the body count rises. He's the nebulous face, the deadliest kind, of corporate espionage. An equal opportunity killer, incapable of remorse, uncaring whether his victims are family or foe. The opening sequence is startlingly dramatic as we witness the callous actions of this despicable individual. The scene is now set to unravel the full extent of this multi-layered plot.

Enter Jenny; clearly a beautiful and intelligent woman. She is also a revered employee at the company. Yet, rather than live a complete independent life, she merely exists; living a less than privileged life. Jenny's circumstances add to the growing mystery. We then meet Matt who is travelling incognito, being the millionaire investigating those responsible for harming his company. Matt is a sudden and unwelcome guest in Jenny's modest residence in order to best maintain his cover. With him impinging on her space, well, needless to say the sparks fly; first the feisty repartee, then the questioning passion.

However, at its heart this is a novel about family and the blood bond that binds--the best that family represents: love, selflessness, sacrifice, loyalty, tradition--and the worst: hatred, corruption, manipulation, betrayal and greed. I’m certainly looking forward to reading more of Robyn Cain’s writings.

I really enjoyed this book. It's packed with intrigue, but what I really enjoyed was the interplay between the characters, particularly the back and forth between Jenny and Matt. There's chemistry there, with the the dialogue managing to be both clever and natural, in a very British sort of way. And the interaction between Jenny and her younger sister is very well done, too. And the grandparents. I could hear their voices as I read, and as I mentioned earlier, it was all very English. Loved it.

And the secrets, all those nasty secrets. Looking forward to seeing what happens next.

Here’s a few words to describe this book: fast-paced, plots, murders, sex, secrets and intrigue, wealth and poverty, strong women, family loyalty, British and Indian culture, chickens - and a rat! The author does not disappoint and has stayed true to form. Jenny and Matt are good people who get caught up in the nasty ways of others, and there are some pretty nasty ways going-on! Grrrr!

This is a novel full of hijinx and capers that moves along at a good pace. Matt Hardwick secretly returns to England when his suspicions are aroused after a number of questionable incidents and his airplane explodes on its runway. He stays with Jenny Bishop, his sister's employee who has her own secrets and doesn't welcome strangers into her house. They find that various people in both their lives overlap and entangle them in danger. Told from several different viewpoints it can at times make it difficult to follow, but ultimately it is an enjoyable read and has moments of humour.

Strong characters, hard-boiled dialogue that reminds me of 40s noir films, and an unsettling, rainy North England background. Crimes are being committed, killings even, and someone is ripping off the family firm- but who? The only one you can trust is the family rat!
Robyn Cain has written a high-tech, modern day pulp classic with a genuinely shocking start and more to follow.

Enticed by reviews promising murder, secrets, and chickens! I'm not sure how the author managed to bring such a wonderful variety of complex characters together but has done so with ease, producing an exciting fast paced story. A great read.
