A Journey Unveiled (Daughter of Venus Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition
A portal. A prophecy. A magical journey begins.
Normally, Lexi Guinel would be excited to find herself in a parallel world, encountering elves and other mythical creatures. If only she wasn’t trapped there for eight years. And discovering her own magic should have been thrilling, but witchcraft is forbidden in Gowerland. Punishable by death. As much as she’d prefer to keep a low profile until she can return home, doing so isn’t an option. A prophecy foretold her arrival and her pivotal role in saving the kingdom from the tyrannical king and his allies, the dark elves. Instead, she must learn to master her powers under the constant threat of discovery. The danger only increases when her fate becomes entangled with that of the ill-tempered Prince Aeric, who obeys his father’s every cruel command.
Lexi isn’t safe anywhere or with anyone. Surrounded by secrets and betrayal in a dark and perilous world, can she remain hidden long enough to confront her destiny? Or will King Ulric find her first?
Step through a crack, you can't go back.
Featuring such tropes as found family, slow burn, animal companions, enemies to lovers, and forced proximity, the Daughter of Venus trilogy is perfect for fans of The Medoran Chronicles and The Chronicles of Narnia.
Diversity is an important feature of the trilogy, including a biracial protagonist, BIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+ representation, and characters with disabilities. Note that much of A Journey Unveiled is set in a small town with a limited cast of characters. Representation increases as the world expands in book two, An Enemy Defined.
“Magic, elements, portals, and prophecies, what’s not to love?…With a combination of science, astrology, magic, war, monarchy, and a prophecy, this was as epic as one would think.” - Gumiho Reviews
"It's part slice of life, part epic fantasy...Lexi’s life in the sleepy Jalnarrah takes an abrupt turn as a tragic fate befalls the town. From this point on, I felt spoiled by the story. About the author

Amy Maltman’s first novel, Ride Every Stride, reached #1 on Amazon charts around the world. Born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Amy grew up obsessed with animals and Star Wars. Not much has changed.
A graduate of the Universities of Guelph and Toronto, Amy is now a disabled pharmacist with syringomyelia, a rare spinal cord disorder. She enjoys spending time with her menagerie of pets (which is never large enough), watching too much TV and too many movies (including Star Wars, Supernatural, and True Blood marathons), reading, and collecting Funko Pops. She channeled this love of fantasy into her Daughter of Venus trilogy, which she fantasizes about seeing adapted for the screen.
Amy is passionate about animal rights and the environment and dreams of opening a farm animal sanctuary. Boomerang Farm and Sanctuary would be named in honour of her golden retriever, Boomer, who died suddenly from cancer.
She once met Alexander Skarsgård and it was the best day of her life.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2024i was blown away from start to finish and i'm so excited that the journey isn't over yet! it's high stakes right from the beginning and it's a very immersive read.
so many of my favorite things: slowburn, enemies to lovers, mc able to communicate with animals, prophecies, elves (not to mention the foreshadowing of dark elves in future books), and a mix of both our modern world and high fantasy.
i laughed and cried and loved every bit of it and will absolutely be reading it again in the future!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2022I felt swept up in an instant up by Lexi's story as she is thrown into a strange world and bound to a prophecy she must fulfill. 'A Journey Unveiled' begins Lexi's quest to save the people she grows to love as she discovers newly found strengths and magical abilities. Everyone around her is keeping secrets and watching her expectantly as they pin all their hopes to her and her unlikely partner, the unwilling and ill-tempered Prince Aeric. An exciting and joyful read that had me laughing out-loud as the author masterfully pieced together the tale of a modern girl in a magical otherworld.

If you are a lover of quest books such as The Lord of the Rings this is going to be a series to keep you eye on. Elves, magic, kings, and other creatures live in this book. My favorite part about all of this, is it’s taken in from a girl who lived in our world. So you’ll find you and the main character asking the same questions. I also appreciate that the main character’s progress is realistic. She didn’t get two weeks of training and suddenly can put magic and out battle the best or the best, her progress is filled with starts, stops, and confusion. I love the realistic aspect, too many times I find in books that the character posses incredible skill from the start or shortly after and it’s just not realistic character progression in my opinion. I like to read through the struggle.
The only con I have about this ONE book is it’s a lot to take in and the progression can feel slow. However this is because it’s such a complex world, and the character building in it is true in nature. So although it can seem slow, it’s because the is the first book setting us up for what is sure to be an extreme adventure with real character progression.
To summarize, I recommend you read it. Not only that, but I also recommend preparing for her second book. Once I passed through the first part of this book (the part I felt was slow) I couldn’t put it down.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2023This book sweep me up in the first two chapters. You “see” the characters in your mind while you’re reading. The development of the story is so well written and a fast paced easy read. So excited to begin the second book to see where Lexi goes.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2020Wow, I really enjoyed this book.
Lexi starts out her day as an average person on vacation with her family and ends it with a horrifying plane crash and an accidental trip into an alternate world that she is now stuck in. That's one heck of a day.
In fact, one of the things I appreciated most about this book in the pacing. She doesn't experience that day and just dive into her new life. She proceeds to spend a week recovering physically and emotionally. And it's not a boring read by any means as Lexi is also inquisitive and willing to learn more about this new world. Other aspects of good pacing I noticed were how long it takes for news to travel (for the most part as, besides magic, the fastest mode of transportation is horse). And how the author includes details like eating meals and learning magic. These details may seem small, but they help keep the story from flying away at breakneck speed and they help develop a fully-fleshed out world.
I also love the emotions the characters experience. Lexi has just suffered a horrible tragedy and upheaval the likes of which I cannot imagine and it shows. She spends days grieving her old life and even months into the story she still feels the pain of loss. She's not just some robot who can brush off negative emotions like dust and move on.
Aside from my love of how the author paced her book and wrote Lexi, the world we find ourselves in is a well-developed fantasy land filled with magic, elves, dwarves, and witches. And that's just book one! I'm excited to see where the rest of the story takes us.
Good for people who like fantasy with a serving of prophecy.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2023A Journey Unveiled takes the reader on an exciting journey into a fantasy world where magic is practiced in secret, and prophecies are on the verge of being fulfilled. This book has all the elements of an epic fantasy novel. Maltman makes this genre highly accessible to many readers through her storytelling, which is easy to follow without the heaviness that some epic fantasy has.
A challenge in writing time travel and parallel universe stories is telling the story from the unique perspective of various characters who are influenced by their own time and place. In A Journey Unveiled, Maltman skillfully shares Lexi’s story while remaining true to her 2004 roots through her use of subtle modern language, gestures, and references. There was a clear sense that Lexi was functioning in Gowerland as a young adult from 2004 rather than immediately assimilating to her new home and its customs.
I loved that Maltman touched on themes such as betrayal, forgiveness, and learning to trust again through the eyes of her two young characters, Lexi and Prince Aeric. They are at odds with each other and the world around them, and the reader feels this tension. However, this is balanced with the wisdom that Kiandra, a Vedosh or witch, offers as she guides them.
The stage has been set with characters and plot, and it is my hope that Maltman dives deep into the relationship between Lexi and Prince Aeric in book two, An Enemy Defined.

5.0 out of 5 stars A damn good fantasy novel
I really enjoyed this book. It's a bit different from a lot of fantasy I've read in that, although there is a journey present, much of the story happens in one place, but I think that works in its favour. We get to understand the world and the two main characters (Lexi and Aeric, the 'chosen ones') because of the interactions and experiences they share. What follows is a story about magic, friendship and betrayal, with a couple of really heartbreaking/brutal scenes thrown in for good measure. There are some charming parts - the behaviour of the animals, a character who has a secret hoard of elf paintings and the series of insults Lexi has in her head for Aeric (His Royal Haemorrhoid is my favourite). As a side note, loved the elves. I have a long list of books to get through, but I'll certainly be returning to this for the sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars It’s part slice of life, part epic fantasy.
Recently, I found out that the word count for this book is close to 100,000. I was very surprised because I felt that the book was much shorter than that. Thinking back on it, though, I can see that, yes, there was who lot of stuff that happened in the story so the word count certainly makes sense, but it’s a compliment to the author that this feels like a much shorter book than it actually is. When I was finished with the book, after reading an exciting and heartbreaking climax, I immediately wanted to continue with the second book in the series.
The opening of the story is equally exciting. The fantastic prologue takes place in a another world, the one we’ll be spending most of our time in, during the dying moments of a battle. Here is where me meet Prince Aeric, one of the main characters of the story. He has been near-fatally injured, and we read about his struggle with whether death would be better than fighting to keep on living. Thinking back on it, I do believe that this is the only part of the story described from Aeric’s perspective. It sets the stage for who he will be for the rest of the story, and provides the insight needed in order to understand the choices that he makes.
And then we find ourselves on a plane. It is, after all, a portal fantasy type of book. On the plane, we meet our other main character, Lexi, through whose eyes we see the rest of the story unfold. As can be seen in the description, things are not going to go well during this plane ride.
This opening is another excellent introduction to a character. It’s an intense and exciting sequence, and we get a peek into Lexi’s family dynamic before it’s all taken away from her. We see a few precious moments between Lexi and her family before the plane goes down and tragedy strikes.
I was curious about how a story that begins with tragedy would move on to more of a portal fantasy territory. You know, with all the fun magic and all that. I have to say that this was done very well. Lexi is suitably heartbroken and desperate as she finds her way through a portal to another world. Once there, a good portion of the book takes place in the same location, a small town called Jalnarrah. It is here that Lexi gets the time to grieve for her family for a short while before being required to learn about her new world and the magic she did not know she possessed.
This part of the story, Lexi’s time in Jalnarrah has a sort of slice of life quality to it as we see Lexi get acquainted with the town and form relationships with its inhabitants. These relationships are critical to the the stunning climax.
I like to think of the climax of this one as something of a double feature. Lexi’s life in the sleepy Jalnarrah takes an abrupt turn as a tragic fate befalls the town. From this point on, I felt spoiled by the story. This second part of the book just does not let up, going from exciting development to exciting development. There is a short break in between the two big events, thankfully, giving the reader a few moments to catch their breath.
I very much enjoyed this dual quality of the book. It’s part slice of life, part epic fantasy. The ending is fantastic, and though it brings closure to this part of the story, it certainly ignited my interest for the subsequent volumes. I can’t wait to read the next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible First Steps into a Fantastical New World!
I had a truly wonderful time reading this book! It begins with one of the most intriguing prologues I've ever read. In it, the author gives us an exciting display of both the quality and definition of her characters, and the large scope and detail of the world we are about to explore.
As the frenzy of wonder that the prologue arouses draws to a close, we are then introduced to our main protagonist, Lexi Guinel, and taken with her through the most unfathomable, heart-wrenching event that ultimately sets her journey in motion. It really was an emotionally taxing sequence that had me fighting back tears but eager to read on!
In the aftermath of her darkest of days, while searching for help, Lexi unknowingly travels through a portal and finds herself a foreigner in a parallel world. It was in these next few chapters that I was given a genuine sense of how extremely talented the author is at conveying sincere emotions, such as the grief, sadness, and guilt that Lexi felt after losing so much in an instant.
The next segment of the book allows both Lexi and the reader to gain a firm foothold in this mystical world. We are introduced to Kiandra, Lexi's grateful host, who serves as a very welcoming and warm guide and instructor, helping us to get acquainted with this new reality, and with the prophecy that seems to be driving all of the events that have altered Lexi's life forever.
We are gradually introduced to a host of varied and interesting people (and animals!) who call this place home, and to the fantastical lore and history that defines this planet (Ayandoh) and the kingdom and country (Gowerland), as well as introduced to the awesome elemental magics and the abilities that the magic users (Vedosh) of this world can command.
Lexi herself is a wonderful character, and as she builds relationships with those around her, I found myself eagerly cheering her on, laughing at her silliest of jokes, wincing along with her, and occasionally feeling sad during the times she blames herself when things go less than perfect.
I would prefer to avoid spoiling all the wonderful things yet to come. Suffice to say, that there is excellent character growth and development, compelling and unexpected twists and turns, tense moments of action and excitement, as well as emotional hardships that have all cemented this book's place in my head and heart. I am completely looking forward to continuing this series! And I absolutely recommend this book to anyone and everyone who is a fan of fantasy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Such an enjoyable read
Firstly this is probably one of the most unique ways to start a fantasy book I have ever read.
A classic fantasy tale. A chosen one and a prophecy with an evil overlord to overthrow.
Lexi brings a fresh take on the story with her unique perspective and her voice gives some great moments of humour.
The connection between characters is slowly and purposefully built making all their decisions and actions worthwhile.
Highly recommend for fantasy and general readers.

My friend was raving about this book so I decided to check it out. Was sooo glad I did. Its a fantastic story with well developed and believable characters (who you will both love and hate in equal measure) set in a world where you can just lose yourself. Looking forward to reading the next one.
