A Long Time Coming: An Evan Buckley Crime Thriller (Evan Buckley Thrillers Book 11) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 681 ratings

It's a fine line between the road to redemption and the highway to hell.
They told him his wife Sarah hanged herself in a mental asylum after they took her child away. Now a different woman's body is in her grave and PI Evan Buckley has a stolen psychiatric report in his hand and a tormented scream in his head. There's only one thing he knows for sure. Someone is lying to him.

Detective Kate Guillory knows more than she’s saying. She’s convinced it’s a deadly trap set by Evan’s nemesis, Newcomb, the man who told him his wife was dead. Despite the risks, Evan can’t walk away and leave the questions that haunt him unanswered – not if he wants to keep his sanity intact.

With his morale worn thin and all of their futures at risk, he joins forces with a disgraced ex-CIA agent on a journey to confront the past. It’s a dangerous and difficult quest that leads him to the jungles of Central America and the aftermath of a forgotten war, where memories are long and grievances still raw.

And when a chilling crime left undisturbed for more than thirty years is unearthed, it’s Evan’s own conscience that’s on the line. Will he sacrifice a part of his own humanity in the hope that all their pasts can finally be laid to rest?

James Harper has done it again. Just when I thought it would be the same old line he comes through with a twist at the end. One more book and I will have read the whole series. Keep up the Evan Buckley adventure.

Have enjoyed this series, but the last few books, some of the information/explanation/history provided was vague, yet Evan knew it (but the author was not sharing with the reader). This tactic utilized mostly in the last 2 or 3 books at this point has been a little off putting. He views a photo, but we are only informed specifically about 1 person, and in passing, of a "poor soul" and other people that are also in the photo. No description of the poses, etc. We don't get that info until the end. We could have gotten the info, and the indepth description of why would have had just as much impact instead of making you feel like the author was in a hurry to complete the book.

I have definitely enjoyed these, but I am seeing a trend with authors series featuring a main character with underlying storyline: The longer the series goes on, the more fractured the writing and continuation becomes (Gabaldon's Outlander series, Patterson's Alex Cross series).

I‘ve read every Evan Buckley book that James Harper has written. In the first book, you learn that Evan has a wife that is missing. In A Long Time Coming, we find out what has happened to Evan’s wife. The book is very well written. It’s not a simple story, but one that has several sub-plots. I couldn’t put it down and read all night long. I laughed, got angry [there are just characters that you want to hate], became excited, and cried my eyes out. I really like the way Mr. Harper writes and recommend his books to all who read the Mystery/ Thriller genre,

Love his style of writing, his characters who can bring laughter or maybe drop a tear.

Have been reading from the inception of Evans involvement with Guillory and glad we can put the pain of his missing wife to rest

A fast paced complicated story with many things answered. I’ve read every book in this series and hope this isn’t the last one! Past history expertly woven into the story line- Evan Buckley is a good guy even through all the horrific details of his wifes disappearance are revealed! What’s next for him and Kate?

5.0 out of 5 stars Damn I've finished the series.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 12, 2021
From memory the first one in the series was either free or a cheap download, but from the start they have pulled me in. Okay so the relationship between Buckley and Guillory may not be different to some that have been seen in screen, but it's written well enough that its easy to picture the scenes in your imagination. The threads involving Crow still leave a couple of questions unanswered along with a couple of others. If you've read books by Solomon Carter and Lee child's there's a good chance you will enjoy this series.
