A Match for the Marquess: A Comedy of Manners (Victorian Adventures) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 25 ratings

Decisions, decisions...
Should Lady Anne Milhaven marry the wealthy and handsome young marquess, or should she resign herself to living out her life in poverty and disgrace, exiled from the world she was born to?
Should Philip Tremaine, the new Marquess
of Penworth, redeem his honor and marry the proud and beautiful earl’s daughter whom he has unintentionally compromised, or should he prove himself as dissolute as his contemptible family?
They are not fools, but marriage is only the beginning. They have an estate to restore and reputations to repair. In addition, they must learn to work together if they are to thwart the vile plots of their scheming relatives.
A Match for the Marquess is the prequel to the Victorian Adventures series.

When she retired after too many years in journalism, Lillian Marek felt a longing for happy endings and stories where the good guys win and the bad guys get their just deserts. Having exhausted her library’s supply of non-gory mystery stories, she started reading romance novels, especially historical romance. This was so much fun that she thought she’d like to try her hand at writing one.

So it was that she took her computer keyboard in hand, slipped back into the 19th century (one of her favorite places to be), and began. She was right—writing romance novels is as much fun as reading them. Her list of story ideas now numbers more than 80.

She may be spinning tales for quite while.

In this superbly written neo-Regency romance, an orphan suffers abuse and neglect at the hands of relatives who take her family home and inheritance off her hands and place her in the servants' quarters. Fate intervenes with a forced marriage to a desirable incoming member of the Ton and removes her from the torment. Meanwhile, as she adjusts to her new bliss, we see her chief abuser gradually become further and further deranged as he backs himself into one corner after another.

Kudos to the author for the fast pace, flawless edit, and delightful epilogue taking us years into their future. Caution to readers for the open-door romance not suitable for teens younger than college-age, though the scenes are not done in a vulgar manner. Language and violence cautions are also due, though not gratuitously used.

I seldom give five stars, but they are deserved in this case.

This was a fun read, from the accidental compromising of Anne to the repairing of Philip's heart, family reputation, and home. Anne's willingness to accept and make the best of her life gave her the strength to stand up for herself and her husband. Philip was such a broken man, not knowing his own worth, .that his happiness was my own. There were moments of amusement as well as some of disgust at the treatment this couple received. It was a satisfying happily ever after, and I recommend this story.

I received a copy of this story as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.

I read the Lords of Sussex series and thought it was pretty good. This book was exceptionally well written and thought out. I thought both hero and heroine behaved honorably in a tough situation yet realistically, given their circumstances. Their love for each other developed slowly although their physical attraction was instantaneous. Any hurt or wariness in the characters toward one another was handled swiftly, thankfully! Loved both characters courage as they stood up to the villians. Remarkable book. Highly recommended!

I love some humor mixed in with my Historical Romance and Lillian Marek certainly delivered that in this book. A Match for the Marquee is such a fun story with historical details that pulled me right into each scene. Highly recommend.

This is a Cinderella type story but it changes in theme when Phillip and Anne marry and only then fall in love.
It tells of their ups and downs, their adventures in solving a mystery, the support or not of families and friends and in general I found this a very refreshing and entertaining story.
I am interested to see what the rest of this series will bring and for now, am happy to recommend this book.
