Virginia, 1927: All Ruth Ann Riley wants is a chance to have a family. But because she was poor and unwed when she became pregnant, she was sent to an institution and her child was given to another woman. Ruth Ann can't stand the thought of never seeing little Annabel's face again, never snuggling up to her warmth or watching her blue eyes crinkle with laughter. And now they want to take away her right to have any other babies? She is not going to let that happen.
All the rich and fancy folks may call her feebleminded, but Ruth Ann is smarter than any of them have bargained for. Because no matter how high the odds are stacked against her, she is going to overcome the scandals in her past and get her child back. She just never expects her battle will go to the U.S. Supreme Court, or that she'd find unexpected friendships . . . and even the possibility of love along the way.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseA MOTHER'S PROMISE is the perfect read for our pivotal time. Based on historical fact, and written by a superb storyteller, you cannot help but find the untidy ends of your own family history drawn up into this story, creating a tapestry of women, past, present and future. I clung to every line like it was a precious work by women I love.
Ancestry dot com revealed in my own family history a 'poor house' as residence of my female, immigrant ancestors. When I'd first seen the previously unknown detail, I could only imagine what kind of life they led in such a place in the early 1900s. Ms. K. D. Alden shows us with the most realistic details what life for unattached women was like in the early 1900s. So expert at her craft, I could smell the doctor's books, wished I could brush Ruth Ann's hair and tell her everything was going to be all right, but that would have been a sad, unfulfilled fantasy to a young lady like Ruth Ann Riley. Only modern women can make such assurances, and mean them.
We need to know the story of eugenics in America, we need to understand it from Ms. Alden's perspective. We need to understand, as women, where we've been to know where not to go.
Ultimately, the story is triumphant. Love conquers all, and A Mother's Promise is as strong a book as a mother's bond with her child.
A Mother's Promise is perfect because it's based in a heck of a lot of painful truth, revels in the triumph and is a superbly written by a talented storyteller. This is my first K. D. Alden book, but it won't be my last. Ms. Alden is on auto-buy now.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseRuth Ann is a girl struggling to understand why she is different. Why God or society or even the whole world have decided she’s damaged and should not be allowed the right to even a simple life as a loving mother. She doesn’t dream of fame or riches, just a small happy home with flower boxes in the windows and people she loves to share it with.
She finds a champion in Clarence who is facing the same judgements and obstacles.
We root for them to triumph and in the process learn a little something about being better humans.
Ruth Ann and Clarence face unbelievable odds that are in fact based on real odds faced by thousands of people in the US and around the world during a shameful time in our history.
Take the journey with them. Fall in love with them. Learn from them.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseK.D. Alden weaves a poignant tale. Her mastery of character, pacing and plot kept me turning the pages in this, her first historical work that sheds light on a shameful chapter in American history. Alden is a talent well worth following.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA journey through one of the worst periods in our history --Eugenics & the horrendous labeling of people along with sterilization. Yet this story affirms the ability of the human spirit to survive and thrive.

Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI bought this book because it was a true story but not until I got to the very end did I find out it was based loosely on the true story. So many of the main elements were changed that it changed my mind about the story.
