A Night of Flames (A Time for Swords Book 2) Kindle Edition
Northumbria, AD 794. Those who rule the seas, rule the land. None know the truth of this more than the Vikings. To compete with the seafaring raiders, the king of Northumbria orders the construction of his own longships under the command of oath-sworn Norseman, Runolf.
When the Vikings attack again, the king sends cleric turned warrior, Hunlaf, on a mission to persuade the king of Rogaland into an alliance. But Hunlaf and Runolf have other plans; kin to seek out, old scores to settle, and a heretical tome to find in the wild lands of the Norse.
Their voyage takes them into the centre of a violent uprising. A slave has broken free of his captors and, with religious fervour, is leading his fanatical followers on a rampage – burning all in his path. Hunlaf must brave the Norse wilderness, and overcome deadly foes, to stop this madman. Can he prevent a night of flames and slaughter?

About the author

Matthew Harffy lived in Northumberland as a child and the area had a great impact on him. The rugged terrain, ruined castles and rocky coastline made it easy to imagine the past. Decades later, a documentary about Northumbria's Golden Age sowed the kernel of an idea for a series of historical fiction novels. The first of them is the action-packed tale of vengeance and coming of age, THE SERPENT SWORD.
Matthew has worked in the IT industry, where he spent all day writing and editing, just not the words that most interested him. Prior to that he worked in Spain as an English teacher and translator. Matthew lives in Wiltshire, England, with his wife and their two daughters.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA Time for Swords series is all that is good and wonderful in historical fiction. Characters who become real through their stories. Adventures, joy, sorrow, wonder, on every page. An interesting and exciting era brought to life. A way to understand better a time and place we can only experience through reading. Highly recommend. Highly recommend anything Matthew Harry writes, and I've read it all.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe plot gets a bit slow at times, but heats up quick enough. Lots of what makes you love a Harffy book, a few twists and turns, some setbacks, and of course good fight scenes!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA Night of Flames is the second book in this marvelous series that follows the life of Hunlaf, A monk turned warrior. In this novel, Hunlaf joins forces with a mixed group of warriors from various regions to rescue Hunlaf's cousin and the daughter of a Norse warrior named Runolf from a cult of fanatics that has terrorized settlements and killed people in horrific ways. The odds are against them but this is not a group that easily gives up.
Anything can happen.
I have read all of Matthew Harffy's books and found them all excellent. He does tireless research for each one and this is no exception. Yes, there is plenty of gruesome violence but it is indicative of the times in which the novel is set. This series is a real treat for fans of historical fiction and shouldn't be missed.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAbsolutely one of your best! What a great adventure. The characters have a depth of emotions from strength, pride, helplessness, and sorrow. This group of warriors bravery and brotherhood all comes together for a cause greater then themselves. Light and darkness take center stage in the fight for souls that have not been lost ye. In the end only a few are left standing to tell the tale.
Just finished and I may read it again now!
Great read!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2022Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI enjoyed this book so much. I love a book that includes a map so I can get a vision in my mind of where Hunlaf is traveling. I also learned so much about medieval travel, foods, and just the struggle to survive during the period. I have read the complete 8 books in the Bernicia Chronicles by Matthew Harffy and also the Wolf of Wessex. I am keeping these books to enjoy again one day. I cannot wait for the next book in A Time for Swords series. Anything this author writes about this timeframe I will buy. Enjoy this author's writing immensely.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAbout 1/2 way through I realized I had read it before. It was so stimulating with such vivid references to the actions and surroundings I just kept right on to the end
I will move on to the 3rd in the series now
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHunlaf is such a fascinating character. In A Time for Swords we see him turn from monk to warrior. In A Night of Flames we see him mature further and grapple with the moral dilemmas and unsatisfied yearnings of his past as he helps lead an expedition against a mysterious foe driven by cosmological zeal and gifted in the tactics of terror. Can’t wait for the next book!

4.0 out of 5 stars A revelation
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoyed this 2nd book in the series,I had this book in my library a long while but was put off reading it as the first one I thought was really slow but the second one picked up the story admirably, and of course the 2nd one would have made no sense without reading the 1st one.Exiting

4.0 out of 5 stars Just one weakness
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMatthew Harffy writes an interesting and exciting story. Readers will enjoy a hero like Hunlaf, who turns from a stripling monk into a brave and skilful warrior. But who wants to read about these adventures as they are penned by the aging, dying Hunlaf, now once more a monk, reminiscing about his heroic past. This flipping back and forth from youth to decrepitude is disappointing. Who wants to know that the hero will eke out a sad end stuck in a miserable monastery? For me this spoils an otherwise very good story.
